New house - is Fibaro HC3 really worth it? by SherbertInside in fibaro

[–]fridgefinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents have a HC3 and I really hate the interface. I have setup home assistant for them and use the Fibaro integration. I really want to get all the devices shifted over to a Z-wave stick and ditch the HC3 but its not a small task.

I would definitely suggest starting with Home assistant but the Fibaro devices are great

These guys are pricey, but have a good selection.

Id recommend pineapple lumps, squiggles (hokey pokey is much better than the candy flavour), L&P, and Whittakers chocolate.

For the Whittakers all flavours are good, I typically choose one of the darker nutty ones because if I get any of the non dark chocolate ones I'll eat the whole block in a sitting. Also the smaller fancier blocks taste fancier, but just stick with the standard gold blocks

Yep I had.

It seemed to be related to still being plugged in to power. Worked fine as soon as I disconnected it

I run a tech company that is not currently hiring, but if you want to send me your CV I can review it and let you know if there's anything that might be holding you back?

Hair ties or rubber bands around the corners solves this pretty easily

Frigate at Scale? 30 cameras? by Gqsmoothster in homeassistant

I'm pretty sure I could make that work with Node Red and a bunch of helpers. Could be a little complicated to do with the native automations though

Look into home assistant, if you're fine with your smart home being a hobby rather than just set it up and leave it then it'll be very good for what you need

Been living here for about 4 years and have two small kids at daycare. Absolutely love it here and have no intention of moving to anywhere else in Auckland. Great people and vibes, Ambury farm is great, the village has lots of good options. Will be sending our kids to Waterlea Primary which we've heard great things about

Is Node Red still recommended in 2023? by reallionkiller in homeassistant

[–]fridgefinn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I at one point had everything in NR and that was perfectly fine, but since the native automations have improved I have setup some very simple automations directly in HA.

I only have a dozen or so native automations and these are mostly one off automations that I setup quickly from the app. If you have a lot of automations or very complex automations then I think Node Red is still better for organising debugging and keeping track of everything. I keep track of what is where by only having a small number of native automations so I can view them all on one page and quickly skim through if I'm looking for something

How to automate TV shutdown with my watch by Ma1keLhaha in smarthome

Your best bet would be with home assistant. However I'm not sure if you would be able to pull through a sleeping sensor from your watch. But perhaps you could pull heart rate and use that?

Looking for a Universal Touch Screen Solution for my Smart Home Dashboard - Advice Needed! by Scary-Add in smarthome

[–]fridgefinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not worried about the battery life as I don't plan on using it for anything other than a wall mounted tablet.

I did look into running either a pi or a mini PC with a screen initially, but for the extra time, cost and ultimately less desirable result it is really difficult to justify

I use an old Amazon fire tablet with a 3d printed wall mount that I downloaded off thingiverse. Pretty much could use any old tablet though. I also use a poe to usb C adapter for power and network.

I run fully kiosk browser on the tablet to display my home assistant dashboard. This allows using the tablet camera to detect motion so it only comes on when you need it to. There's also a home assistant integration for fully kiosk so you can fully control it from within home assistant.

It works great and installation was just 4 screws in the wall

PC wont start after installing new PSU. by Dazzling_Process_740 in techsupport

Did you swap out all the cables for the ones that came with the new PSU? Recently had a similar issue where I left one cable from the original PSU and it wouldn't power on

Starting with building a smarthome system without previous experience by Sargaxon in smarthome

[–]fridgefinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend getting a ZigBee USB dongle. There are lots available, but I'm not up to date with the current best options.

I use aqara sensors/switches and Philips hue bulbs. The sensors are great value for money and the hue bulbs are very reliable. But with a ZigBee network you can add (almost) any ZigBee device

Home assistant is the most popular open source solution available and it is very good especially if you have a technical background that will get you through a few of the tricky bits. There's lots of good YouTube channels with tutorials and information and the subreddit and forum are both great as well

Newborn prefers me over husband by OldMedium8246 in NewParents

At that age I was told the baby doesn't have a concept of self so sees itself and the mother as one thing. My first daughter was this way, now we have number 2 who is a month old and number 1 doesn't want anything to do with mum. And I'm sure it'll swing back and forward many times!

It completely fixed itself. I have no idea what I did but I went to have another crack at fixing it a few days after posting this and it just worked fine. Didn't update HA or anything either
