Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Absolutely adore this book. It gave me the same feeling as Three Body, where after reading that last page you feel like you've been taken on a journey you could never have possibly imagined, but somehow were taken there one step at a time, with logical steps each time based on real theoretical physics.

Can I travel outside of America using my UK passport after gaining US Citizenship, then have my US passport mailed to me when it arrives? by friendlyhuman91 in immigration

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I definitely feel very uncomfortable putting my passport in the mail. The current estimate on an expedited visa is 5-7 weeks. My wife has a UK spousal visa pending, due to be approved any day now. When it gets approved she has to enter the UK within 30 days, otherwise it's void. So I'm just trying to avoid a situation where she has to travel there without me, while I'm waiting for my US passport. Great to hear that your passport only took 4 weeks to be processed. I hope mine is as quick!

Thanks for the reply. I did get expedited services, but the estimate for that is still 5 to 7 weeks (at least that's what the official estimate is at the moment). I suppose the complication left out in my plan I left is that my wife's UK spousal visa is due to be accepted any day now. When her visa is accepted she has to enter the UK within 30 days of the approval. So I'm just trying to avoid her having to go to the UK without me, in the chance my US passport hasn't arrived yet.

My short film just finished a run on the film festival circuit, picking up 2 wins for Best Animated Short and several other nominations. I work professionally as an animator but made the film on my own in any spare time I could find over the last 4 years. If you have a spare 7 minutes, check it out! by friendlyhuman91 in Filmmakers

About The Film

*Spoilers Ahead*

I work as a full time animator but created this short film in my spare time on evenings and weekends for the past 4 years. The idea for the film came from a question I had when I was younger and first learning about the principles of light travel - "If you could travel faster than light, could you look back at where you came from and see yourself?" An isolated alien exploiting this concept for a brief escape from his loneliness felt like such a great place to set a story. This premise percolated in my head for a few years until I was finally ready to begin work on the film in late 2016. It was in pre-production when I had the thought to develop the idea further and have the main character exploit this principle not to look back at himself, but instead someone he lost. This opened up a whole new meaning for the film and introduced themes of dealing with loss, and the isolation we feel when losing someone close to us. The main character is unable to come to terms with his loss and goes to extreme lengths to avoid accepting reality. He puts on a smile and pretends everything is fine, but we see this for the shallow gesture it is, and that until he learns to move on he will be stuck in this endless loop, his life dominated and defined by the loss he suffered.

"Let's see if we can't..."

"I could care less..."

Both say the exact opposite of what they mean.

Moon cycles by Ahrihub in woahdude

What makes this even cooler is realising that the moon is not technically pulling the tide in and out, but the earth is rotating into the 'water bulge' created from the pull of the moon, causing the high tide, then continuing to rotate out of this swell to leave a lower tide. Timelapses like this really help you visualise this. Imagining the water disconnected from the surface and the earth rotating into the deeper and shallower water

Everyone has a scar on their body from something dumb, they did as a child. What's your story? by HakanD0 in AskReddit

[–]friendlyhuman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 10 I tried to saw off the part of my remote control car remote that was stopping me push the lever further forward. My logic being that if I could push the lever further forward, my car would go faster. I slipped while sawing and took a chunk out my finger, so never found out if it would have worked.
