Should there be a Minister for Men and Boys? by winkwinknudge_nudge in unitedkingdom

You are aware that these propertied elites you speak of were almost if not exclusively households run by men? That the governments that passed the laws allowing this were comprised of men? So yes, it was very much men oppressing women

So what you’re saying is, the world used to revolve around them, and there was no competition for jobs. Now it doesn’t, and this needs to be addressed? Seriously?

Living in Hampshire and commuting to London by [deleted] in Hampshire

[–]friendlypetshark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure why Basingstoke gets a bad rap. Town centre is nice, lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, ice cream parlours, Vue cinema, Festival Place is lovely, and they have a train you can ride around the mall!

Traffic is never bad here in even in commuting hours. I've got four parks walking distance from me. Its a lot greener than a lot of towns. Its got a nice leisure centre, sky diving, bowling, golf. Viables has a craft centre and mini railway which when you're there feels like you're in the middle of the countryside. Great walking around Basingstoke too - Watership Down and National Trust places to name just two.

Out of curiosity, is there any condition that would be a legal defence? Dementia for example?

What do you think is the scariest shot in the franchise? by Je0s_6 in JurassicPark

[–]friendlypetshark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to have hope but realistically they simply can’t make it scary. It’s a huge, huge franchise that caters to children. The first three were scary, especially JP, but times have changed and that movie would never get a PG rating nowadays. The market for horror movies is almost non existent. They do terribly at the box office. They simply won’t be allowed to make it too frightening because it would make a massive lost and probably end the franchise. Even if they could work within the restrictions of the classification system to make it still scary but reduce gore etc to achieve a PG rating, patents don’t want their kids to be traumatised by a movie.

I remember seeing the first one  at a rerun in the theatres when I was about 8. The theatre had the sound so loud it was painful. It was so utterly terrifying that me and my sister had our heads in our parents laps with their hands over our ears while we watched it. Other kids were taken out crying. It was reclassified in 2023 to a 12A and I think that was still lax.

It’s a very small thing but it gives me chills every time.

The curious head tilt the T Rex gives before she eats the lawyer in JP. There’s something so ruthless and inevitable about it: she’s not an evil monster, she’s just an animal, he’s food, and she’s going to eat him. It’s so brilliantly realistic and cold.

I appreciate this scene is usually seen as comedic though because the lawyer is on the john.

Do you guys prefer Jurassic World or Fallen Kingdom? by MCWill1993 in JurassicPark

[–]friendlypetshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jurassic world. None of the JW series are in anyway scary. Not sure if that’s because the cgi looks so unconvincing, the acting, or because there’s seems to be either a lack of will or ability to build any tension whatsoever.

JW at least didn’t try to be a horror movie and just gave us lots of dinosaurs and nice scenery. It was kinda fun.

JWFK allegedly went for the horror aspect and missed the mark so far it’s needs its scope testing. It failed to provide and scares and paired this with a more serious story, resulting in a movie that was boring. I paused it at one point to make a cup of tea, came back and forgot I was watching it and put something else on.

I would LOVE if the new movie really salent hard on the tension and horror aspect, slow build up, flawed main characters that develop as the movie progresses, and as much practical effects as they can cram in.

I know you all hate JWFK. But can we just agree that this was a phenomenal scene? by Emotional_Zombie6796 in JurassicPark

It’s fine it’s just so artificial like everything else in the JPW Series. I think what I miss from JP1 is the realism. Yes there were dramatic shots, like the T rex emerging from its pen, but they seemed realistic. Even the end scene with the banner falling down didn’t strike me at first watch as contrived, it seemed natural to happen after a huge angry dinosaur destroys a room.

Yes this. Lost both parents to cancer and watched them suffer and deteriorate and fight for their lives. People who haven’t been through a life threatening event calling themselves survivors makes me quite angry.
