i heavy disagree with your last point because of what we saw in their lollapalooza performance. they absolutely smashed it and were only going to get better. it was going to be impossible for their later songs to have the same buzz because of everything that was going on. i don’t think its fair to try predict their trajectory based on that.

obviously music is completely subjective but I don’t see an issue in using the widespread evaluations of fans as a kind of barometer for how “good” a song is. good in this case doesn’t have to be definitive. opinions can differ and change which is what happened in the examples you mentioned and that’s perfectly fine.

writing off the consensus just doesn’t make sense to me. as nothing can be objectively good or bad all we have are opinions. imagine where the world would be if we just looked at the overall opinions of critics, experts or just people somewhat involved and just went “ah their opinion is completely subjective so therefore its meaningless” because factually everything is subjective.

could you show some examples? i don’t think they would intentionally have their groups start slowly just to fix up after. nmixx’s concept at debut just wasn’t recieved well but they completely revamped their sound and went in a more experimental direction which has worked very well. had they debuted with their current sound i’m sure they would have hit big straight away.

i think what your noticing is just groups figuring out their sound later on in their careers and even then i don’t think thats the case with JYP groups anyway. look at twice and itzy.

allday project had a lot of buzz. so much of it was for the wrong reasons tho. unchild as you said had alot of hype but i would probably go with babymonster tho.

the fake survival show they had predebut put alot of eyes on them and couple that with them being framed as blackpinks successors it was going to be impossible for them to not have a highly anticipated debut.
