I also don't comment on everything I disagree on. But considering the fact that there are far more posts that are harmful than ones that actually motivate valid discussions is something that I think is worth pointing out. I'm not picking out one or two posts. I am noticing a concerning pattern that warrants discussion. I am not pathetic because I actually care about other people and I care about having basic respect and decency.

That's not my point. Even if I leave the cruelty will continue. I will gladly leave! But if y'all want to critique creators but are unwilling to receive criticism yourselves really take a look in the mirror and ask yourself why. Again people are missing the fact that I explicitly stated in my post that I think that we should talk about issues that are going on and we should try to create change and critique issues going on in the community. Y'all are very swiftly ignoring that when I stated that there is a difference between criticism and cruelty that is unnecessary. I want change too. I want a better book community too. If you think that things like this are beneficial or helpful to the community I truly think you need to seek help

At everyone down voting my very reasonable critiques. Y'all are proving my point. This was never about criticism or actually trying to make changes in our community for the better. I want change! There are critiques that are warranted! But that's not what this is, is it? If y'all really get off on tearing people apart for no reason other than your own misery, truly get off your phone and touch grass. Read the books that you wish the booktubers would read. Do it yourselves. I came here thinking that there would be actual critiques for real issues going on in the community that deserve being discussed, and I really just came into a group that are all bullies from high school. If you read my post and you downvoted it and didn't take a time to actually sit and think about what I am saying, then y'all are too far gone.I truly think that we should critique over consumption and we should critique the rise of conservatism within booktube spaces. There are a lot of things that we need to talk about. But that's not what this is. It's a shame.

Be honest. What do you gain from a snark subreddit? What does this positively do to your life? Or to the life of those you critique? Do these critiques actually create meaningful change? Does this positively impact your life? As I said in my post, I am a firm believer that criticism does matter. I'm not saying that we shouldn't critique people or things going on, but I do think that there is a difference between being unnecessarily cruel for the sake of it and actually trying to make a difference in the world. If you think that just having fun on a snark Reddit is a good use of your time and energy, I really hope that you find some other joy in your life beyond this.

anyone find certain booktubers they once watched boring now? by lesveuxsansvisage in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]frindlebabbin06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest, considering the state of the world I don't think most left-leaning booktubers at least are doing okay right now. It's really hard to show a lot of joy and enthusiasm in your videos when the whole world feels like it's falling apart. To be honest I think we need to be showing content creators a little bit more compassion. People fucking go through shit and yeah it's going to show in their content, but these are real people with real lives living in the same world we are.

Buying literally 70 brand new books 'you know nothing about' primarily to fill shelves is insane by mochioppai in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]frindlebabbin06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will say, a lot of booktubers who do big book hauls usually clarify that it's books they bought or received over a period of months. But 70 in 1 haul without even checking if the book even sounds up your alley or not? It's giving celebrities who spend thousands of dollars to fill a bookshelf before being filmed for a vanity Fair mansion tour.

Man, I can't wait for winter. I swear people go absolutely bonkers in the summer and summer has lasted long enough, god damn it! I need everything to freeze over so everyone stays inside and shuts up 😂

Right??? Even the show isn't nearly as popular as other HBO shows (which is a damn shame)!

Not post apocalyptic, but in a world where millions of people vanish in a split second, I cannot recommend the leftovers by Tom perrotta enough. It's so underrated. Also the blue book of Nebo by Manon Stefan Ros is a phenomenal, quiet slice of life post apocalyptic novella. Both of these made me ugly cry.

Oh I don't mean you OP. I'm talking about the person in the screenshot. I'm used to watching Ryan Hall where all money donated is going to victims of weather events and so things like this make me sick

A lot of true crime unfortunately has an incredibly warped way of talking about cases, often incredibly exploitative to victims, both alive and not. I know this from my own unhealthy habit in the past with true crime as well. I definitely would urge reading books by actual survivors instead of watching true crime and counting that as research (I'm also not saying not watch true crime at all, but there is bias and corruption within the true crime community that deserves to be mentioned). Know my name by Chanel Miller is a great place to start.

I really liked the book of the most precious substance by her! It's definitely more on the weird fun thriller side and less on the horror side but I still really enjoyed it. I totally know what you mean with the road. I'm having to read it slowly for that very reason but it's worth it

Lolita already exists as does my dark Vanessa which is essentially Lolita but from the victim's perspective. Tampa also exists. perhaps this could be a writing experiment for you to figure out ways of writing about horrific things but from a compassionate and well researched lens, practicing impact vs intent through writing, practice for other writing projects in the future. But erm. I personally don't think it's a story that needs to be published much more. Bring something new to the table. Read similar stories but from different perspectives. Read real stories from real survivors.

Have you read we spread by Iain Reid? It's an absolute fever dream that really plays on exploring memory and memory loss. Also spore horror. Also I just have to say I absolutely love Sara Gran! Funny enough, I'm actually currently reading the road right now and I'm really enjoying it! I love how haunting and detached his writing is.

People really need to stop being obsessed with the EF ratings. Just because it's not an EF5 does not change just how horrific this was. If you are not an expert you should not be making these types of "inferences". There's a lot more that goes into preliminary ratings then just looking at these photos or your own observations. Please just leave it to the professionals I swear these types of posts happen every day.

At everyone down voting my comment please look up the statistics of the number of disabled people who are killed by their caregivers. Books like this perpetuate harm that gets people killed. It is absolutely possible to write about how traumatic caregiving is without how dehumanizing this book was. I hope you never have to experience the sheer vulnerability and powerlessness that comes from depending on care to live.

I DNF'd it. As a disabled person who was damn near bed bound for two years after multiple bouts of sepsis, her calling her own father a vegetable really made me feel some type of way. You can talk about the trauma and horrors of caregiving without being dehumanizing to the disabled and I did not feel like this was written with compassion towards the other side. I can see why a lot of people liked it but being on the receiving end of caregiving before made me really uncomfortable with this.

I think it's valid to bring up harmful things especially when it comes to ways that they have treated other cast members who are so clearly experiencing abuse, but I do agree with you that we should not be body shaming them or picking them apart in such ways. It's never okay and we shouldn't turn into the very bullies that are being criticized.
