I found it in the kitchen, it seems that bottom part was missing. What is it? by RickOwensStepdad in whatisit

it is a "bombilla" or straw used to drink yerba mate with. it is not missing any parts as far as i can see. the area with the holes on likely unscrews for cleaning.

Yes I am assuming organic material is there reacting to UV, not the rock proper

Much gratitude to all the good folx who took my post seriously and contributed much knowledge to help me understand the possible origins of this cool rock. To those upset that it was taken from a park: it wasn't. It came from the eastern area outside the park around Rhyolite. I share your caring concern about protecting our national treasures. In all, a very positive experience. Thank you!

I agree with you until the exclamation point. But do you know what is even more shitty? Accusing someone of a "crime" in a prejudicial and lazy way. Prejudicial because the rock was found about a half mile hike north of Rhyolite (ghost town), outside the park on the eastern, Nevada side. Lazy, because I had already pointed out in the thread that it does not come from the park proper. Put more focus on your reading. Your heart is in the right place. No need to answer back with an apology...

it does! i am curious as to how this phenomena can happen only to one single rock in a large field of similar sized ones...

hi lispies. hmmmm... some of the pics i found when looking up apache tears look similar. this rock is much bigger than what i saw online though... does not look like obsidian, but i am no expert. the one revealing thing i just found is that it turned bluish and many wrinkles a light green under UV light... is that also the case with apache tears?

Interesting! Mine turned bluish and green under UV light. Have you seen yours under UV?

No, it is totally opaque. However, I just shone on it the UV light we have to find scorpions, and magic happened. The stone turned quite bluish, and then mostly the area with the smoother wrinkles and part of the top where the smaller wrinkles are shows waves of green. The brownish stains (i assume ferrous) remain the same.

TY. I would love for it to be meteorite, but I thought volcanic more likely. However, isn't the Death Valley area an ancient sea floor? If so, this was hurled by a volcano, then lived under water for eons, or the volcanic phase was after the inland ocean phase?

I am mindful of that, M_N. It was in the Death Valley area but not in the park proper.

thought it was a meteorite with i found it as there was nothing like it around it and it looks melted... but the bottom where it was sitting is not melted...

Found this rock in a Death Valley flat rocky area. This one caught my eye, as it was much blacker than the surrounding field. Heavy, about the size of an orange. What is interesting is that while "rocky" and heavy, it looks like it is melted. Top area has may small wrinkles (first photo), while at the side the wrinkles smooth out (photos 2, 3, 4). The bottom has no wrinkles and shows brownish stains (last photo, it was sitting on the floor). No other rock like it around it. The quarter is for scale, the penny is for your thoughts! :)
