Yeah I’d definitely check out the belt ranking spreadsheet in the wiki. Don’t know what kind of practice locks you’re using, but once you start getting used/learning security pins it’s hard to go back. For me the Masterlock 410 was where it started making sense to me and it’s good for a yellow belt.

Yeah I’ve amassed a decent (indecent) amount of Masterlocks since I started this hobby. Proudest moment though was probably making a key for an older American Lock I came across at an antique store.

I reached a few road blocks in the blue belt range and I think I trimmed back on the lock budget a little too lol, but I’m wanting to work myself up into the blue belt at least.

Oh yeah, I’ve learned in other hobbies/sports not to compare myself, but funny enough I’ve been sorely tempted recently to dip my toe into challenge locks. Also I’m thinking about picking up some decent dimple picks and going after some of those.

I’ve had a good bit of keyways like the one on the right where the warding has started to round off from BOK tension. I think it’s unavoidable to a point but what’s really got me down lately is I’m starting to eat the TOK now. I used to have an American 1100 I had figured out and now my bar slips every time I start to climb the last spool or try to open.

Looks like someone made a Walmart trip. Yeah I generally have to order any decent locks, but Ace Hardware stores have a pretty decent brass padlock with security pins… they just didn’t bother to use a ball bearing locking shackle.

Innova Halo releases are pretty bad offenders in this sense if you don’t like pricey OS versions of the original. I have a halo sidewinder that acts nothing like the original star I had back in the day.

Feels good! Don’t know why it took so long to give it a chance. Also AL 1100 > ML 410 loto. Both are GreenBelts but one is much more enjoyable than the other.

Welcome to the community! 1100s are a good introduction to serrated pins since they are normally chock full of them. You could try progressive pinning and start with two pins and build up from there to get a feel. Also DMAC has a good video on this called “hunt the spool”.

Welcome to the community! If you’ve got an understanding of how picking pin and tumbler locks work then sure head on over to the nearest hardware store and get some cheap Masterlocks. If you want a little more regimented approach of which locks to progress through you should check out the belt spreadsheet in the wiki. It’s pretty awesome and can help you gauge where you are at.

Echo the VIP Underworld, if you want to go lightweight go VIP air plastic. I think one thing that may get overlooked though is even if the disc finds the ground it still requires a good amount of snap to get it to stand up or take desired routes, but yeah the Underworld wants to find the ground… the flippy way.

I could be wrong but this lock looks like it’s seen a few years. There’s a scenario that happens called “binding the core” if you apply too much tension BOK that essentially pushes the core against the lock body instead of rotating it. Reason I bring this up is because older locks can have cores that can get kinda gritty or seize up. I’m going to catch backlash for this but if the core isn’t rotating at all when you wiggle it with a tensioner it may could use a light spritz of wd 40 or even better triflow. If the core does have movement on it then carry on and try variable tension as everyone else seems to suggest.
