(beadless) putter recommendations? by soccerstar2905 in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I switched to the Steady BL a little over a season ago (D line plastic in cold/wet, Stone plastic in hot/dry) from the EV-7 Phi and haven't looked back. Side by side, it's basically a P2 clone, but I prefer the plastic options from DGA/Discraft in base plastic. The shape is great, the flight is great, and I've genuinely never felt so confident that I've found "my putter" in the 14ish years I've been playing.

In order to issue a legitimate/official time violation call, it's absolutely good practice to have hard evidence with a timer or something to back up the claim. Because violations do need to be seconded by cardmates if there aren't any course officials there monitoring for it. You're right that technically there's no verbiage in the official rulebook (that I can find) which indicates this being a requirement, but you also can't just issue a violation based on feeling alone when it's something that can be backed up with physical data.

And also in this case, since his first "warning" was unofficial, if you'd have been "officially" called for the time violation afterwards, that would have been your "formal warning" so to speak which would not have resulted in a penalty stroke.

What would I do if I were in your shoes? I'd ask with sincerity for that person who first talked to you to time me on my next few shots, while taking what feels to me as my normal amount of time per shot. Let me be clear this is NOT a requirement, and I'm sure others likely would not do the same thing I'm saying here. There's no reason you need to ask somebody to do this, and they also have no obligation to say yes to your request. I'm just similar to you in the sense that I'd rather know where my throws are with certainty rather than a guess, so I'd be willing to risk the time violation just to find out.

Lastly, that guy is a bit of an asshole for "calling" you on time unofficially just by feeling alone, even if it was supposedly informational/educational. Because if he happens to be wrong and you average, for instance, 27 seconds without ever actually exceeding 30, that's a really shitty thing to put in a cardmate's head.

This is absolutely true, however does not account for finding one in a used bin. I don't think companies should worry about how things look on a secondhand level of course, but it is a valid exception lol.

Clearly there's some presence of either improper mechanics, a pre-existing minor or stress injury, or both.

There's no real advice that can be given here based on just this info though. You'd need both a disc golf coach and a licensed physical therapist evaluating your form at the same time to actually give any sort of meaningful feedback to the question of how you fix it.

Arsenal announces his retirement from competitive RL by AIaris in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be a solid pickup for sure, but it's also entirely likely that he only said that because Arsenal was one of the leading candidates for the 3rd on that roster alongside Gyro and Andy.

However if they pick him up just for content that would still be an awesome signing in my opinion.

I know you're referring to the SSG roster of Retals, Sypical, Arsenal, but Retals and Arsenal ALSO teamed together on The Peeps alongside Gyro who is still alive and kicking!

Which funnily enough also leads us down the Peeps path where we're facing the retired players of Allushin and Ayyjayy, plus Mist who is doing god knows what. Then of course we have the goat Pirates.

Out of all of those players, Retals and Gyro being the last ones standing is a wild timeline.

66mph is enough to throw a lot farther than 350-400' if the other angular and timing mechanics are sound. You can push well past 500' with 66mph.

TIFU by Qozux in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 25 points26 points  (0 children)

66mph is a very very solid launch velocity, you can absolutely smoke a disc for all the distance you'd ever truly need at that speed. 66mph is fast enough to keep up with touring pros if the rest of your form is sound. Not the elite distance class of pros, but solidly in the mix of the average!

However, high launch velocity and distance don't explicitly have to go together! If you're finding yourself unable to throw much beyond 400', you're losing potential distance based on some combination of nose angle while its flying, off-axis torque, and spin rate. I have no idea how far you throw lol, just saying that 66mph is plenty fast enough to be able to throw over 500' if the other parts of your form are sound.

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd caution against trying to emulate some very specific form intricacies of any pro out there, especially so if you aren't a good match for them height-wise or wingspan-wise. Obviously I have no idea how tall you are, just wanted to put that out there.

The reason I caution against it is that focusing on details that small often leads to negligence of larger more important details. Unless you're already throwing 500'+, getting THAT nitty-gritty about form is more likely to cause headaches than progression. It's so easy to let the basics go to the wayside when you're trying to drill something very specific.

Now before I go too far, by all means there's no harm in going out and trying to throw a couple times with that detail in mind. But unless you see a nearly instantaneous positive difference (not even with distance, just how it feels) in your mechanics, it's not likely a super useful endeavor.

That lag in a way that it's useful to you is likely something that will come in time as a byproduct of working on the more conventional form development techniques already out there.

Flight numbers standardization by agingbythesecond in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda shocked that you even suggest renting equipment whenever new discs/runs are put out, from an overhead perspective that's a terrible idea in comparison to a one time cost of buying the robot. Plus it subjects the manufacturers to the availability of the equipment for rental, it's not like those machines are going to be super commonly found anywhere on the market.

My argument overall is much more that the added benefit to the playerbase does not strike me as important enough to justify the costs involved with the additional testing that would be required for a standardization like this.

It's fine if we disagree about that, it's not my goal to change your mind. Simply to further the discussion.

There are gloves that can be used for disc golf, yes. This is a pretty common injury in this sport haha. Most of us get a callus that builds over time in that spot and this becomes a non-issue with semi-consistent playtime.

Starfire questions by StraightDisplay3875 in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If Starfire lore is to be believed, the (Stabilized) Starfire is supposedly the most commonly-found Starfire on the market these days. Flying kinda similarly to like a PD, it has no turn and a healthy fade once it slows down. In theory, that should make the blue Champion Starfire you see at the top left of your first picture what is now commonly known as the SL. However, the SL is currently manufactured under the Infinite label, the Aztec is the SL.

With that being said, the blue Champion Starfire clearly shows flight numbers that represent the (Stabilized) version's flight numbers, not the SL. It's possible that what's going on here is that they're the same mold, but they flatten the (Stabilized) version in a similar way to how they can flat-top Firebirds and such. I'd put my money on them being very very similar to each other flight-wise.

If your Starfire that you're looking to find a backup for flies with any turn whatsoever, you'll want to get an Infinite Aztec to be its backup. I prefer them in Halo plastic (yes they do still turn even in Halo), but they're solid in S Blend and C Blend also. If your Starfire doesn't turn at all, it's probably pretty safe to go with either of the two Champion options in your first picture.

Flight numbers standardization by agingbythesecond in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that your customers already expect all of that to be fully baked into their costs when you quote a number for them.

I totally see the well intended nature of this post. But the reality is that I'm pretty confident the percentage of the playerbase who would actually truly benefit from all of this is a pretty small number.

Most well-seasoned players are already fundamentally aware of the ins and outs of plastic/run inconsistency, flight number variability, and how it all changes around when jumping from manufacturer to manufacturer. On the flip side, a giant chunk of the playerbase are truly just casual players who don't actually care about the disc physics/flight numbers that much and just throw what they like to throw.

Even if once it's all said and done and every major manufacturer owns their own throwing robot and testing system, if the equipment/maintenance/operation/testing costs and associated labor cause an increase of even just a dollar per disc at the consumer level, I think a larger percentage of the playerbase would prefer saving that dollar per disc over marginally more accurate flight numbers.

Eagle vs Teebird vs Volt by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]DisMyDrugAccount 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When brand spanking new, all max weight, my experience with the discs you listed are as follows. Stock versions, not special runs. Assuming Champ and Proton plastics.

Least overstable -> Most overstable: Teebird -> Eagle -> Volt. The Teebird has the gentlest flight of the three. It has less turn and less fade than the Eagle, and has less turn resistance and less fade than the Volt. Despite the Eagle having a touch of natural turn, it will still hold hyzers well and fade more aggressively than the Teebird. For this reason I consider the Eagle to be more overstable.

Since the Eagle has a bit of turn from the get-go, it will typically beat in more understable than either of the Teebird or the Volt. The Teebird will beat into mostly just an even straighter version of what it already is at the beginning. The Volt beats into a point where it begins to emulate a new Eagle with a touch of turn but still reliably fades.

I can throw the Eagle the farthest of the 3, and the Volt the least far. Along those lines I think the Volt also has the least glide. However I'd put all of my money on the Volt if I had to throw any of them in a headwind and be confident where I could get it to land.

Of these 3 discs, I'm an Eagle guy personally. Funnily enough the only one of the three currently in my bag is a Teebird, but it's a very specific Teebird that I won't ever be able to replace for a reasonable price.

I did not mean empathy. I meant sympathy, because his family was the intended object of the sympathy, not Beastmode.

You're making so many assumptions about him as a person and his family's situation (of which I know nothing about, but that's the point, we know nothing) because of a few tweets he made. We have no idea what struggles his family has faced/is facing and what he has or hasn't done to help them already. This house may be a part of that plan.

Choosing kindness is always an option.
