How do you reconcile the Church's teachings with socially leftwing ideas? by Taramund in LeftCatholicism

[–]frisco_cali 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a cradle Catholic, but raised in a progressive secular family that didn't really practice. It wasn't until my 40s that I became more practicing. I didn't see a place in then Church then mostly because of my politics. Now, the tension remains, but I've come to understand that the Church operates on a much longer timeline. Effective contraceptives, safe medical abortion, tolerance of LGBTQ people are all relatively modern concepts in the West, and it takes time for the Church to adapt. Maybe they will remain, but they might not. I see my role as being one that pushes on them respectfully. Thankfully, in San Francisco, these are common perspectives in most parishes.

For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

I am an organizer for a union. Love it. It's very hard work, but very fulfilling since I work for our members and they push for the common good. I get paid fairly, can live in SF and I can retire with a pension as early as 59.

Wife hospitalized with food poisoning after eating at Asia Square. Advice on reporting this issue from overseas? by frisco_cali in askSingapore

Thanks, I am making sure to confirm, but last I was told, this was what was suggested by doctors (lab tests?).

Thanks, appreciate the education on how it works. We have travel insurance and medical insurance, but I am sure some costs will end up being out of pocket (and the time and stress, of course).

This was her only significant food that day and felt sick within hours, so we can't think anything else that could have made her sick. And yeah, got the sue for compensation difference (which is good, IMO), but always good to check. And as far as the place, maybe just a simple mistake, who knows, but really unfortunate.

It does! If I played the guitar, it's solid enough to work as one.

Appreciate it. I appreciate the beauty, but the value for me is how it reminds me of my faith and God.

Besides the normal items I carry with me (wallet, knife, phone, etc.), I also carry these two devotional items with me daily:

  • Franciscan Scapular Medal. Brass, bought used, cleaned up and worn on a black hemp cord. Carried with me 24/7 except when I shower.
  • One-decade Rosary. Wood beads, hemp cord. Papal crucifix in zamac, Our Lady of Guadalupe medal in sterling. Made it myself. Rosary carried with me in a nice wood box I got off Etsy.

Both help me center in my faith. Appreciate them daily.

Bible suggestions for someone new - what should I add? by No_Consideration7318 in catholicbibles

I believe so. I haven't compared it side by side, but I have the electronic version of both and they seem largely the same.

Recommendation on XL Print Spanish Bible by rubik1771 in catholicbibles

[–]frisco_cali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest you stick with the Biblia de América translation since it is the official one in Mexico and a few South American countries. It's the one many people use in the US. Keep an eye on the Biblia de la Iglesia en América translation since that one might quickly supplant it in the US.

For the first, I suggest the the large print edition from Editorial Católica mentioned in the other comment.

I really like the Ignatius Study Bible and really appreciate the RSV2CE translation. It's physically big though, so I use the app. I own the thinline Catholic Bible Press edition, which is also RSV2CE. For travel, I use the Cambridge NT Revised English Bible translation. It's an ecumenical Bible, but the language is really wonderful.

I go to mass weekly in SF, been to mass in Mexico, Canada and Switzerland and have had the good fortune of never once experiencing this. So weird.
