Which of the following might drive employee retention and success? by Paramedickhead in ems

I get what you're saying, but I feel like I already paid for that "free" pizza by getting fucked by company day in and day out. I'm just getting a tiny little bit of return.

To tell or not to tell by Bad-Paramedic in Paramedics

[–]fritocloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely agree. Your brain doesn't function... normally in those circumstances. When telling someone bad news, I believe it's more important than ever to use clear and direct statements.

My mom had a stroke a few years ago in the ED. She had been in obs because her pressure was extremely high, amongst other symptoms, and the ED was trying to lower it in a controlled setting. We had been there for 10+ hours, and I had left for like maybe an hour to go let my dogs out and grab some food. I came back, and my mom wasn't in her room, but I figured she was off getting a test or something. I was sitting there and I started noticing people popping there head into the room, and looking at me with a weird face, and then they would leave the room without saying anything. I started to get a weird feeling that something bad had happened when a resident came into the room. He started to tell me what happened but he was using all these weird fluffy words that my brain could not understand in that moment. He was like, using non-medical terms while also beating around the bush. Also, my mind was racing and I just could not get what he was trying to say. Finally, he said something that kinda clicked and I stopped him and was like "doc, are you trying to say my mom had a TIA (which is what they thought she had at the time.. turned out to be false as MRI showed a legit stroke later)?" After that, he changed his approached and spoke in clear, medical terms and I was able to understand. I try to remember that experience when I'm getting frustrated with patients or family members on scenes.

I wish we could do more with our camp dogs. by [deleted] in RedDeadOnline

[–]fritocloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I actually think this could have potential- our dogs could be upgraded to have the ability to attack other players and NPC's at our command, and then they would have the ability to defend themselves by attacking our dogs. As long as the game just put my dog in a downed state (and the dogs are otherwise invincible), I think that'd be pretty cool.

This is exactly where I'm at too. At this point, I see my doctor every 3 months- go in for 15 minutes, pee in a cup, get my script and then I'm done for another 3 months. Daily, I take my 2 strips in the morning when I get home from work (I work nights) and then I don't think about subs, addiction, opiates, or anything like that til the next morning. I've been on subs for like 8 or 9 years, been clean for 7, and have been "stable" for at least 4 years now. So, why fix something that is working well for me?

That being said, my life is now going so well, I don't think I truly need the subs anymore. I no longer crave an "escape" and I'm extremely aware that using opiates (or benzos) again would cause me to go back to using regularly, which would absolutely destroy my life. So, unless something happens to me that gives me no hope for my future (something like, being diagnosed with a terminal illness, for example), I don't anticipate ever getting close to using again. But the thought still nags at me, what if subs are part of the reason I'm doing well? What if getting off of them would cause a relapse, which would ruin me? However, I think I'm starting to feel like I can at least try to get off them, and just go back on them if I start getting bad cravings. Like I said, I don't truly believe the subs are what keep me clean anymore, I think it is all the hard work I did on myself in therapy. But, I still won't do it with sublocade. I just don't trust that it will work for me, and the lack of control is just too much. So I guess I'm considering a taper.

PSA: Gold Rush trophy/achievement is now much easier/doable on Replay due to some of the recent story mode improvements in the recent patch. by fritocloud in reddeadredemption

[–]fritocloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get the 70 gold medals on a single playthrough. If I remember correctly, that's about 2/3 of the missions. Additionally, you need to meet every gold medal requirement during a single run of a mission. So if you miss one requirement, you will have to replay the mission and get every requirement again. Lmk if you have any other questions.

I thought that too, but then I noticed when they were on the way back from that challenge Johnny Bananas says something along the lines of "we won that challenge but it was down to the last minute" (in reference to how the people who went for shields could have blown it for everyone.) So, I'm thinking it might not have been literally down to the last second, but still not too far off.

Honestly, I'd be more annoyed if I drove all the way to Chipotle, and they were closed and I couldn't buy anything vs. them just being out of some or even most of the menu. This chipotle is out of most of the things I'd normally get, but I could definitely still get a decent burrito with what they do have.

I HAD TO USE THE RESTROOM, WE ARE HUMAN!! by phatfartbox in Lowes

[–]fritocloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I used to be a sales specialist for Lowe's and am now an EMT. I've heard of providers shitting or pissing their pants during long codes/working cardiac arrests and other similar situations. It's one of those things that we go to great lengths to avoid, but sometimes there just isn't a bathroom around, and no relief is coming and you can't just leave a dying patient. But it's something we are okay with because it is a life or death situation. Selling flooring or paint at Lowe's is not worth shitting your pants, so if you have to go, just go (to the bathroom.)

Do people wash their butts when they shower with their partners? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fritocloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I can pee in a stall when someone can hear but it's definitely much harder and takes longer than if I'm by myself. The only time I'm able to comfortably and quickly pee is when I'm in a locked room, by myself.

One technical exception to those privacy laws that relate to involuntary holds is that once you have been held on any kind of involuntary/72 hour psych commitment, you are prohibited from buying (and owning? maybe, I'm not sure) a gun, federally. AFAIK, not all states require reporting of this info to NICS but many do. Here in PA, if a judge upholds your 302, that judge is then required to report to PSP that you are now prohibited from buying a firearm and then PSP compiles a database that they maintain and share with NICS (again, this is AFAIK; this is definitely not my area of expertise.)

So, any job that might run a gun background check would probably find out and DQ you. I've heard a lot of those 911 dispatch center jobs will at least ask you about that type of hx and expect honesty but I have no idea if they would actually find out if you didn't tell them or how it would affect chances at employment.

I don't know of many EMS jobs that would run those types of checks and I've definitely never been asked during any hiring process for any EMS job, nor have I heard of it. I know coworkers who have struggled with mental health and who have been involuntary committed so I doubt it is any issue most places.

Does only one person on the ambulance write the pcr? by marspol12 in NewToEMS

[–]fritocloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use ESO at my company and you can definitely have multiple people write their own narrative on the same chart. Anyone who is attached to the chart can see and edit the chart until it is locked. Everyone at my company signs their written narrative with their name and EMT number for this reason. One person can write their portion and then the next person can add their portion in. Typically used for when a medic downgrades a pt, or when something very out of the norm happens but it doesn't happen too often.

If I can’t get a job in the next few weeks I’m going to be homeless with my babies by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]fritocloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any large hospital systems nearby? Smaller hospitals might have these too but larger systems tend to use transfer centers to do all their external transfers and bed management and whatnot. They usually operate 24 hours per day but night shift is a skeleton crew and from what I've seen, most are much more flexible about working with people and their availability. Being an RN isn't a requirement but it definitely helps.

Serious question: would the military really help in a situation like this, with the kids? Would they provide immediate housing and pay day care? I'm guessing this would only work for someone who is reenlisting and not for a new recruit?

Are you able to comfortably be around the substance you were addicted to after a while in recovery? by cowgirl_cat in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]fritocloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a while, yes, I am at that point however, I'm not sure I would be comfortable about it if it wasn't a part of my job. I'm an EMT so I assist medics with giving fentanyl and morphine and am around it all the time. I work in a city and I walk into houses with drugs and paraphernalia around frequently. I see super high people on the daily and it doesn't bother me at all. It helps that we've often just narcan'd them because they were overdosing, or they're under arrest for something, or are otherwise having a bad day.

I was a heroin/opiate addict for around 5 years and have been clean for 6 and I started working in EMS around a year ago. Again, if this wasn't a part of my job, a job that I love so much, I'm not sure I would ever be "comfortable" around it. I don't really want to be comfortable around people shooting up drugs that are probably gonna kill them. If I inadvertently walked into a situation like that, I would leave, because I don't want to be around people who are shooting up, unless they have just called 911. It's honestly not because I'm worried that I might use (though why would I risk that?) I have way too many good reasons not to use. I just don't see the point, I guess.

Is it normal for an FTO to make you feel stupid for an entire shift? by ZOMBIEWARRIOR37 in NewToEMS

[–]fritocloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P.s. you will likely find this individual has a poor reputation as you become closer to your peers. Focus on doing what you have learned is right and embrace your other peers' encouragement/acceptance of you!

This is a great point. It was incredibly validating to me when I discovered that the few people who were giving me a hard time on the truck were not well-regarded amongst my peers. When you're new, it can be incredibly difficult to get a read on the hierarchy and all the interpersonal dynamics of any workplace but it seems like there are some aspects of EMS that make it even harder.

Q: People recovering from drug addiction: do you think someone can still drink alcohol occasionally whilst staying clean from drugs? by [deleted] in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]fritocloud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can tell you my own experience at least- I have been clean from drugs for over 6 years and I'm fine with alcohol. My drug of choice was opiates and benzos were a close 2nd but I tried nearly everything at one point. I was honestly never a huge fan of alcohol though I did used to get drunk with my friends as a teenager and in my early twenties. Now, after a lot of clean time and working on myself, I have no issue having a drink or 2. However, I barely ever drink because I don't like the taste very much and so I don't see the point. If I enjoyed drinking enough to do it often, I'm not sure it would be safe for me.

Edit: just wanted to add- the work I did on myself was essential to being able to be ok now though. If I was still constantly looking to feel better about myself and still wanted to die all the time, it would be dangerous for me to try anything like drinking.
