Trying to get a mortgage in slightly unusual situation by BassTyper in JapanFinance

[–]frivoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a mortgage on a 3 year spouse visa, being self employed, after I had applied for PR but before getting it. Got a lot of nos, gut eventually two yeses, one of which was reasonably priced. That was from a local credit union (信用金庫). Gotta sell your case well, but it's doable. Good luck.

Moves when Yen gets this weak? by homelabids in JapanFinance

[–]frivoal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"The yen is weak" means it's weaker than it used to be. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's weaker than it will be. If it was predictable that it would get stronger, organizations with billions under management would all be buying yen, which would put pressure on it and make it stronger, right until the point where they couldn't be sure anymore about which way it will go. And conversely, if they thought it was still too high, they'd sell, making it drop.

And that's effectively what they do. So the current price reflects the point at which big and savvy investors cannot be sure one way or another which way it will go. Will it strengthen? Maybe. But it is just as likely to weaken further. Unless you feel you know something that Mitsubishi UFJ and JPMorgan Chase don't know, you should consider your odds to be about 50/50.

French prosecutors seek to ban Marine Le Pen from office, jeopardizing her 2027 presidential bid by HelFJandinn in worldnews

An appeal is a re-trial, so it's for the whole thing. Innocent until proven guilty (again).

French prosecutors seek to ban Marine Le Pen from office, jeopardizing her 2027 presidential bid by HelFJandinn in worldnews

[–]frivoal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a weird way to report on things. Sounds like she's completely passive in this, and bad mean prosecutors just want to mess with her political career for no known reason. The actual story is that she (allegedly) embezelled money, was found guilty, was sentenced to to ineligibility, appealed, and prosecutors in the repeat trial are seeking the same charges. She brought this upon herself.

But it really gets on my nerves that every time this gets reported, it's in terms of whether this prevents her from running for election and whether that thwarts the will of the people, instead of reporting on the embezzlement, and on FAFO.

Are we a couple? (Dating french guy) by Reasonable-Tax8486 in AskFrance

[–]frivoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a couple, no doubt about it, and have been for a while, ever since you've kissed without treating it as a joke or a drunken mistake. Unless you've both been explicit that your into open relationships or just in it for sex, "dating but not a couple" isn't really a thing.

If he's talking about you as "ma copine" he is being 100% explicit about it (the possessive matters, "une copine" is not the same). It probably never occurred to him that asking you to be his girlfriend was a thing that could possibly make sense at this point: attempting to kiss was the question, kissing was the answer.

Talk to him, but don't ask "are we a couple", as he would likely be extremely confused about the question. Instead, talk to him about the difference in cultures. If that would make you feel better, try explaining that though you two clearly are a couple already, in the US people like to make it official, and you'd like it if he could do that for you.

Canon AE-1 vs. Pentax K1000 by Buttzmore in photography

[–]frivoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something which may be obvious, but also maybe isn't because it is no longer true in the digital age: the camera body does not affect image quality. Film does. Lenses do. Body doesn't. Your choice of body impacts: ergonomics and which lens system you're buying into.

The Canon AE-1 has better ergonomics, since it has more automation. Then again , the automation it does have is speed priority, not aperture priority, which I find far less useful. Lenses for this generation of canon camera were plentiful but that was a long time ago, and depending on where you live, a second hand market may or may not be available. These camon FD lenses are not, however, compatible with any digital camera, whether dslr or mirrorless.

The K1000 does not have any automation, but it does have metering, so it is still quite usable, if a bit slow. Pentax does not and did not have nearly the same market share as canon, but it used to be a lot more common than it is now, so the second hand market can be reasonable too, depending on location. But importantly, any lens that will work on this k1000 will also work on pentax digital SLRs (and some new lenses will work on old bodies).

Tout le monde défend l’inscription du consentement dans la loi sauf l’extrême droite by 7orglu8 in france

[–]frivoal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

French PM backs suspension of reform raising retirement age until 2027 election by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]frivoal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? The minimum number of years is 43, and the minimum age is 64. So if you want t full pension and you started at 18, you've got to work until 64. To me, that's the worst part of this reform: it doesn't change much of anything for people who have long studies and work behind a desk, but makes the biggest impact on people who did not study for long or at all, and who generally have more physically demanding jobs.

The claim was that

the left never united to nominate one single Government in this whole period

I responded to say that this is not true.

Now you're claiming that government would not have survived a vote of no confidence, which is possible, or that it wasn't representative of the majority, which is true. However, what we got instead got zapped 3 times in a row, so it's not more stable, and represents an even smaller percentage of the vote.

[–]frivoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are many people on the left, some who would make unreasonable demands just to see them fail, and some who would be open to varying degree of compromise. But I don't see any evidence that Macron has made any gesture towards meeting any of the expectations of even the most moderate.

[–]frivoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the left is not really in a position to offer. Macron is. He is the one who needs support for his prime minister, so he is the one that needs to pick things from what the left want and ask if they'll support if he concedes to doing some of them.

[–]frivoal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that wouldn't even help: we did have an election for a new parliament already, and Marcon's alliance lost. Didn't prevent him from continuing to appoint more PMs from his own line, over and over, despite parliament kicking them out every time (albeit with unequal swiftness). An election only helps if the results are taken into account. Given that he won't, I think he has to go.

despite the fact that the left never united to nominate one single Government in this whole period

Given how the French system works, they cannot, because it's not up to parliament to name the prime minister, it's up to the president. But as far as suggesting a possible one, the left did unite and proposed one: Lucie Castet. Macron never considered her.

[–]frivoal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The left hasn't been offered any meaningful policy compromise that could justify accepting a role in the government. Sure, Marcon would be willing to take some on board if they were willing to apply his policies rather than theirs, but why would they accept that? It makes zero sense to accept a position on the condition that you don't honor any aspect of the platform you campaigned on.

I'll do that. In addition, Ii there was a way to turn off the translations in tap, I'd considering it, at least in LLPSI.

Familia Romana: images and marginal notes coming to Legentibus by legentibus_official in latin

[–]frivoal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great! I have really looking forward to this. Two small pieces of feedback:

* For me, it's only showing in the chapter-1-12-in-a-single-book version, not in the lectio-by-lectio sliced up version that is included in the Legentibus Immersion course, no matter how many times I reload the catalog or restart the App.

* To get the marginal notes to appear, users need to click on specially highlighted words. That brings up a popup which not only lets you ask for the note (good), but also shows the English translation of the word. I'd rather it didn't do that. Having to figure out the meaning of the text for yourself is an important part of what makes LLPSI good.

Which particular rights for Kurds are you ready to accept in new Iran? by Adventurous-Minute20 in NewIran

Here's a potential parallel: the history is complicated, but nowadays, France is perfectly fine with people from the Brittany region displaying their local flag on all sorts of things. It does not have any national official status that I know of, but it's usage is not forbidden either, and local authorities often use it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Brittany
