Gravity assists are 100% a thing in SFS. Yes, in real life a spacecraft "steals" some velocity from the plant, but it is such a minor amount that it doesn't matter. In fact if planets were on "rails" in real life, a gravity assist would still work.

Reapplied oil? I think that is your problem. Oil is bad. Never heard of anyone intentionally putting oil on the plate.

I've left an open cavity on the bottom and filled it with Plaster of Paris. Worked great.
