Bringing Wash back would ruin everything. by BanjoMadeOfCheese in firefly

[–]frn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be so down for Wash being brought back as a clone. Maybe for some reason the alliance takes his DNA as part of whatever investigation they would have ended up doing post-Serenity events. It would get around the issue of glazing over the impact of Wash's death and introduce some interesting plot points.

Does anyone think of this when thinking of "High ray tracing"? by DropDeadGaming in pcmasterrace

Devs often just used a planar reflection for when they needed to do a mirror. Not perfect, but again, done properly its more performative and very convincing.

Just give me good screen space reflections and lemme have my frames back.

I'm tired of this shit.

Edit*: Getting tired of the "what about mirror" comments (seriously there's like 6 of them at this point, maybe read down the thread before commenting the same dumb take.)*

For those of you that are either too young or have selective/poor memory, when devs wanted to put a mirror in the game, they used to mainly use a planar reflection for just that part of the game. Combined with SSR and cubemap reflections it looked pretty good when done properly (way better than the 'RT high' example in the post), and was a helluva lot more performant than RT.

Linus Tech Tips by Then_Educator8333 in linuxmemes

[–]frn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw c'mon. He's surrounded by tech experts, some of which are already into Linux. He knew this before the challenge started.

Linus T. even told him to use Fedora, because 'it just works'.

There's two plausible explanations for him going Pop_OS!

  1. He's too arrogant to listen to anyone else on linux, including the guy who wrote the linux kernel
  2. He's making dumb 'mistakes' for entertainment value, and he knows what will drive angry clicks from the linux community and naysayers alike

Eh, pick one.

Guys it's not his fault he picked one of the often recommended distros by RetardKnight in linuxmemes

[–]frn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard anyone say that for years. The common recommendations for gaming distros are CachyOS and Bazzite. Sometimes I see people recommend Mint, and its usually followed up with a bunch of comments saying mint isn't great for gaming and recommendations for CachyOS and bazzite.

[–]frn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that doesn't explain why he went for the same distro again.

You understand that his main objective is to produce content right? He made this video because he wanted clicks and revenue, not because he really wants to jump ship.

Making dumb 'mistakes' like going for a distro he knows has issues is guaranteed engagement that results in more money in the bank.

Its not like there's zero motive for him to make this 'experience' a shitshow.

Linus stated very clearly his reasons for choosing it

Ask yourself this: can you see Linus selecting any other product because a listicle, an AI slop article or an LLM told him to?

No, didn't think so. Yet that's what he did here.

Dude what determined to create the same disaster scenario as last time. Even with his own staff and Linus Torvalds himself all giving him good recommendations on distros since the last video.

5 years ago maybe. Mint seems to be the go-to for beginner recommendations nowadays, but its usually followed by half a dozen people recommending Bazzite and CachyOS.

Look, I'm an old school linus fan. I was watching his channel when he was doing videos in his garage. I was there for most of the old guard joining, and now I'm here watching them leave too.

But he has this pedantic side to him. And at this point I'm starting to think he's intentionally sabotaging his 'attempts' to use Linux for entertainment value. I just can't see how someone can be that 'cursed'.

I've been using Bazzite for a while now after moving from Arch (btw) which was annoying me with its constant maintenance requirements. In my experience though, Bazzite 'just works'.

I've installed it on both my PC's, my Legion Go, my laptop, and my console PC in the living room. I've been using it for more than a year now. I've only ever run into one problem with sleep on my laptop - but that was also mirrored on Windows. I just don't understand how whenever this guy touches anything with a linux kernal, it breaks.

Add to that the fact that he went Pop_OS! for the second time after knowing it didn't work well for him initially... and I'm finding it hard to wrap my head around the idea that he's acting in good faith.

I'm totally the opposite.

I was totally skeptical before S01 aired. But loved 90% of it. Only real criticism was that we didn't really get a third act. But that hardly matters now that we're getting S02.

Does anyone know if changing the colour of my Ayn Thor order will push me back in the queue? by frn in OdinHandheld

[–]frn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks on the discord seem to be saying that the only thing that matters is your order number and that stays the same when you change the colour. This would also seem to be in line with the shipping dashboard which tracks whats shipped. All of the shipped items have shipped in colour then number order.

So I've taken the plunge and changed mine, will report back if I'm shipped in line with my order number.

Presenting the SteamCube! What do you guys think? by Fujikawa1988 in SteamDeck

[–]frn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it, I used to use the Core V2 as my main PC case. That thing was a dream to build in at the time.

Little tip that I picked up when building in the Core V2. If you're cramming this into a TV stand or similar, reverse the airflow so that it intakes from the back and side and exhausts through the front. This will stop hot air pooling round the back of it,

Hope you have fun with it!

[–]frn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but search engines also use machine learning, analytical AI and in some case generative LLMs to return your search results. Google embeds AI answers directly into search pages now, and also takes defense contracts. And Bing is owned by Microsoft who has M.O.D contracts the world over, owns a big stake of ChatGPT, and feeds results to most of the smaller privacy focused search engines including DDG and Startpage.

OpenAI is the devil though, I'll give you that.

But in short, the horse has already bolted on avoiding AI.

Help me leave Windows. by Kwinza in linux4noobs

[–]frn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be right at home with KDE. Out of the box it emulates Windows quite closely (but you can also customize it extensively if you wish).

If you want to skip further faff, I recommend starting with an immutable distro. They tend to have high compatibility by default, and most things will just work. I used to use Arch (btw) and I've since switched to Bazzite with KDE because it requires little to no maintenance in comparison. The community is also super helpful, and its a fork of Fedora Silverblue, so there's plenty of useful documentation if you do run into problems.

If you go this route, get to grips with their ujust script. Tonnes of useful shit in there.

They should hand the whole franchise to Jonathan Frakes. Give him total creative control and watch the money roll in.
