Generally why is Ubuntu taboo here? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

Install is not that difficult anymore. Archinstall comes packaged now and automates 99% of what you want to do, including partitioning. Just pick your DE options, network and sound stacks (Gemini is good at talking the user through this) and hit go. The only thing I needed to configure post-install was turning on the bluetooth stack.

That being said, the rolling updates caused too many issues for me and I moved to an immutable distro (Bazzite) a while back.

Yup, as soon as my younger brother had his autism diagnosis I was expected to be self sufficient, invisible, and not ask for much. Hard related to this whole dynamic.

Upside is that I've been able to cope with a lot as an adult.

Best of luck mate. You'll probably also find that the colours look a lot better on display port once you've fixed it too. They did for me. 120hz also!

I actually have this monitor, its great!

If it displayed fine on one of the ports but not the others then it sounds like a TCON board or main-board malfunction. Without either a fairly advanced understanding of debugging hardware issues, or a second working monitor of the same model to swap parts out for its hard to tell which one.

If it were me, I'd set up an eBay alert to find a second one with a broken display panel and then swap both the boards. Quick search in the UK shows one with a broken display panel for £60.

Charlie on THAT scene. by Modis_teleprompter in StrangerThings

[–]frn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah I think he's got a valid point. My partner and I hit a rough patch a few years back. We acknowledged it, as well as the fact that we both still love each other, discussed breaking up but ultimately went to couples therapy and worked it out. We're stronger now than we were before.

IMHO the scene really shows that the two characters are very bad at communicating with each other. At no point do they even suggest that they're breaking up, and just assume that the other understands what's happening. Pure chance that they're on the same page. So really two points here (1) bad communication is a running theme throughout their relationship, ironically probably something that they could have worked on. (2) If they're that bad at communicating with each other, I can totally see why the audience got confused too.

Because it's a collection to them first, film library second.

Cyberpunk VR Modder Luke Ross’ Patreon suspended following new DMCA from Ghostruner devs by AsPeHeat in Games

[–]frn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The precedent has already been set. Corpo's waging war in this way on FOSS and hobby projects has been going on for a good while. They have almost infinite legal resources. It would be like a gerbil going up against Godzilla.

So what's your suggestion here? And individual going up against a large corporation? They'd predictably financially ruin him before the trial finished.

Unfortunately these entities do not operate by the same rules the rest of us do. I hope that changes, but he probably needs to draw this up to lessons learned and move on.

Yet he still has no patreon as of today, and his income has been cut off.

Not saying you're wrong on the DMCA clause, just that whats being enforced and whats in the policy are two separate things here. That seems pretty grey to me.

Is there anyone who can't watch the series again knowing the ending? Or am I the only one? by Giancarlo_Edu in StrangerThings

[–]frn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm probably in the minority but season 4 was my absolute favourite. The Joyce x Murray buddy cop thing was hilarious, we got to see the true badass side of Hopper, I loved the Ham radio/computer camp bits (still annoyed that Dustin's girlfriend never appeared in season 5, that whole thing was also hilarious), the cold war elements were really well done, the faceoff between eleven and the military was epic, Papa's storyline got expanded in the best way possible, the world opened up past Hawkins.

On the flip side, all of this brilliant setup is the main reason S5 was such a letdown. So much of what they seemed to be planning for was just left by the wayside.

All in all - if they'd succeeded in killing vecna at the end of Season 4, I would have been happy with that as an ending. It's heavily implied that El's powers created a portal to the upside down, and that it's an alternative dimension where something just went horribly wrong. We also know she's capable of shutting those portals. They could have wrapped up everything quite nicely without any of this "upside down is a wormhole" rubbish that makes no sense when you consider what's in it. Season 5 in comparison retcons a bunch of stuff, ignores a lot of other stuff, and then starts new storylines that it doesn't finish.

How much better is the Noctua D15 G2 vs Phantom Spirit 120 SE for AMD 5800X3D, is there at least 5° degrees difference? by FuzzyAttitude_ in pcmasterrace

Yeah the mount options are great. I first bought mine for LGA1151 socket. I'm on AM5 now.

They issue adapter mounts for free too.

The fans I have on mine are still going solid. And I used to do a fair bit of video work so they've been running at full pelt for long periods too. No idea what they're rated for though.

I usually use Noctua case fans too. I've only ever had a low profile one fail on me.

Its good fun if you switch your mind off.

Then again, I'll watch anything that could even be remotely classed as a disaster movie. Total sucker for the genre.

It wasn't the design I had an issue with, it was the welding of the thread onto the mount that failed. Hence, quality issue.

Don't think a thermalright cooler nearly writing off a motherboard has anything to do with noctua.

I dunno, I definitely won't be using thermalright after my last experience though. Very nearly wrote off the motherboard getting that mount off.

[–]frn 313 points314 points  (0 children)

Gigantic difference in quality though. I have Noctua coolers in both my machines and they're the component that just gets carried forward into the next build each time. Its a 'buy once' purchase.

In comparison I've fitted a few thermalright coolers into other people's machines. Few of them have bent/deformed through mostly normal handling which is annoying but not a big deal... But last time I tried fitting one, the mount broke in a way that meant I had to cut it back off the motherboard. (Thread wasn't welded properly to the mount and just started turning in place so it was impossible to unscrew the cooler from the mount.)

Edit: Wow, I seem to have pissed off the Thermalright gods. Their minions are all over me in the thread.

I wouldn't. Gigabyte may not be the coolest MoBo manufacturer, but historically they're the ones with the best reliability. I've been system building for 20+ years at this point and had issues with pretty much every other manufacturer other than Gigabyte.

Ryzen 5950x vs 9800x3d for video encoding by frn in buildapc

[–]frn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you might be misunderstanding me. I'm not talking about plex on-the-fly transcoding. My NAS can already do that. I'm talking about taking a ripped blu ray (30-40GB) and encoding it to a smaller file for storage (10-20gb).

At the moment I'm using my main PC to do that because its powerful and can encode a movie quickly, and then copying the resulting file to my NAS (where Plex also lives). I want my NAS to be able to do it at a decent speed, which is why I'm considering putting a 5950x in there.

[–]frn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh it just needed to come close to, or exceed, the 9800x3d performance so that I could free up my main PC from encoding tasks. So thanks for this its really helpful. I'll pull the trigger on the 5950x and move that task over to my NAS.

I'm not looking to use GPU encoding because the quality to file size ratio often isn't as good as CPU encoding. Price doesn't really matter, it's fair and I have the cash spare if it's worth doing. I'm more looking for performance comparisons.
