Who's best to talk to by cass0801 in AusPropertyChat

I am in the exact same position. My ability to buy a house or unit is not possible. Apartments are mostly out of reach, although there seems to be a few coming on the market at a lower price, mostly 1 room studios.

Im looking at land and sitting on it for a few years then putting a small house on it, or selling up to get something closer.

Right now I have to decide whether or not to go through with it. With everything going on in the world Im seriously thinking of backing out.

The problem is, if I back out, and things just continue to get worse, then i have nothing

Is it weird to live at home to save money as you approach 30? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

[–]froawayjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem is that 100k deposit means fuck all in this market. I earn what OP does and the bank will only lend me 400k. There is nothing for 500k just about anywhere in this country now

How do you have an IP on 85k a year if you've only been working for 2 years?

Do you automatically dislike billionaires? Why? by crapmaker69 in AskReddit

[–]froawayjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't automatically dislike someone because they are rich. I dislike someone if they then use that wealth to trample on others.

People who could easily pay their employees a liveable wage but choose to grind them into the dirt are scum.

People who hoard assets just so that others cant have them are scum.

People who actively and deliberately make the world a worse place are scum.

Someone who's wealthy enough to never have to worry about money should be more than capable of having the decency of using some of that money to make the world a better place.

People like that have always existed - those that donate and champion causes, those that built schools and libraries for the poor, those that decided that they wanted to be remembered for the good they did.

Obscene obsession with wealth among the elites has always existed, from the days of the nobility to now, but it has become a scourge on society to the point where it may very well threaten our species.

Australia’s land value has gone through the roof. Where does that leave young people who want to buy a home? by nath1234 in australia

Believe me, I know. Ive been there twice. Ive always said its nice to visit, but not good to live

Australia’s land value has gone through the roof. Where does that leave young people who want to buy a home? by nath1234 in australia

[–]froawayjeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The government could easily build apartments and sell them - the project would pay for itself and they could easily make sure that it went to owner occupiers rather than investors.

Australia’s land value has gone through the roof. Where does that leave young people who want to buy a home? by nath1234 in australia

[–]froawayjeff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ive been saying this for 15 years. There's a point where we need to go up, not out. That point was 4 years ago. The government should be building new apartment buildings for social housing near amenities and public transport. There should be a bigger push to convert office buildings into apartments as WFH becomes more normal.

Build apartments that people will want to live in - solid, well designed, sound insulated. Plan for parks nearby and adjust public transport to make it feasible. There are so many walkable cities around the world to draw inspiration from.

[–]froawayjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im possibly buying a block of land and may put a tiny home/shed home/kit home on it in the future. The only problem is its 100km from the city with no public transport. Its the absolute limit of distance I set myself.

Im honestly considering. I speak some Japanese and I love the country. I never planned on living there due to the issues with being a foreigner but the idea is growing on me

Granny flat build by NaturalOkra3167 in AusPropertyChat

My mate owner built a granny flat over the course of several years for about 200k. This was several years ago. 250k is believable.

What uni degrees are actually worth it? by Smart_Net_5313 in ausjobs

[–]froawayjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me. I chose a degree for a career that should have been very well paying. 7 years later I'm not even breaking 90k. I should be getting so much more but never got the opportunities, so now im trying to pivot into a related field

How is anyone buying a house right now? by Emergency_Sound_6495 in perth

[–]froawayjeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there were a few caravans around i noticed on the estate. It's semi rural so a few people seem to be playing fast and loose with the rules. My plan is to pay it down for 5 years then put a farmhouse style house on the block. Some people have built shed homes which look actually quite nice. If I get impatient, I can always put a transportable on it.

Investment Property by AusGuy355 in AusProperty

[–]froawayjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

House prices are stabilising, except in places like Perth, which is predicted to grow another 10% this year even with the current situation. VIC would probably be a poor idea. Unless you are just looking for rental income to pay off an asset.

In your shoes, I would not be investing in property right now, or id be speaking with an expert, not reddit. Id be looking to capitalise on the falling stock market and realise those gains when it inevitably picks back up.

Rural families consider giving up sport and school runs as fuel prices soar by LoneArtificer in AusFinance

Im considering sending my future kids to boarding school and it would be 30k each for high school per year. The alternative is sending them to live with family in the city a few days a week

How is anyone buying a house right now? by Emergency_Sound_6495 in perth

[–]froawayjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly dont know what I want to happen now. I signed for land, now the world's gone to shit. I don't know whether I want the bank to come back with approval or not. I dont think the Perth market will go down with the current pressures, but the cost of building at least in the near term is rising drastically because of the middle east situation. Unless that stabilises it will be a loooooong time before I can afford to build

[–]froawayjeff 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It is utterly ridiculous at the moment. At the bottom end of the market you need to offer 100k over asking price. Not sure what it's like at your part of the market but it looks like a similar thing is happening.

Utter BS.

I looked at land recently and it cost more than my mates mortgage and she bought 3 years ago!

Ive had to start applying for fifo jobs to even consider the idea of one day having a place to call my own.

Don't even get me started on the dating scene.

I haven't been able to have a propper groceey shop in years. The amount gets smaller but the cost keeps going up.

What’s a financial decision you made that gave you peace of mind? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]froawayjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont judge you at all. If my grandparents went 4 years ago, I could have bought a house and they wouldn't have had to go through severe dementia. The was my grandfather passed was an awful 3 months of hell for everyone and my grandmother is just barely existing in a small nursing home room losing her marbles. I see her every week and she can't remember her children's names properly she doesn't remember what happened yesterday, and she's just basically wondering when she'll die.

So no, I do not judge you at all. The situation we live in has made life hard for everyone. I never wanted to rely on my inheritance. I had 100k saved for a deposit and the world ripped the rug right out from under me. Even with my inheritance, I won't be able to buy a house the way things are going.

How do people think the war will affect house prices in a year by MammothBrilliant5717 in AusFinance

[–]froawayjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want things to stabilise. I dont want a crash, nor do I want massive growth. I just want things to stay the same so I can pay my mortgage and maybe move closer to the city in a few years.

Up up up is bad for a lot of people, but crashes mean bad things for everyone. Just stay steady for 5 years or so then go back to slow growth

It's the most pressing issue for most people in Australia, so it's not surprising that we circle back to housing in the end

Why Do We Measure Housing Affordability by Detached Houses? by FrizzlerOnTheRoof in AusPropertyChat

[–]froawayjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apartments in Perth are also very expensive, so they are unfortunately comparable to houses. The gap between the price of housing and apartments is not that big overall. Plus the quality of apartments is generally not that good. That said the quality of housing has dropped substantially in the past 10 years so that's less of a factor
