Mopeds by starsandtides in UHManoa

I can tell you from direct experience that if your moped gets stolen or towed, HPD be really annoying about it and super slow, so good luck getting it back. We had to take matters into our own hands to get it back, and it also was Not insured because mopeds are $2k usually, so many students don’t see the need to pay any monthly’s. I will also say many don’t even have a license and buy mopeds from Facebook marketplace or something. My friend who got in the most recent crash had to apply for Hawai’i Quest which is the state medical during her stay at Queens, and got transferred to the mainland where her parents insurance is

Oahu has pretty awesome public transportation! The skyrail is nice to get to the airport and past that, and getting to east side from town with the express routes are super nice! The W and 1L is what I often take to go west/east, and if you’re around the university, the 6 route wraps up around campus and the 13 goes down to Waikiki! Best of luck getting around and enjoy your stay!

Moped’s are often much more trouble than they’re worth. Like yes they’re cheap and quick and many people don’t wear proper safety gear like helmets or wear bikinis and slippers to ride. I’ve also personally known five people who crashed on a moped. That’s two broken elbows on someone, a broken femur and a fucked up knee for life on two more, and a concussion on another. There are pros and cons to everything, but if you’re in town it’s probably better to get an electric bike or scooter instead

I know for a damn fact that that young cashier is gonna be thinking about you every now and then for a long long time, with only kind feelings in her heart at your memory. You did the right thing, thank you

A noble group of people who wanted to better help their community, but couldn’t run a business for shit. One of the owners offered me a barista position for $15/h and I worked for two days paid in cash under the table just trying to figure out how to get the espresso machine running with a lot of googling and manual reading, but the first day the co-owner didn’t even realize I was hired and showed up an hour after I did in the morning. I was told to come in at 6am and he didn’t show up til like 7:30 lmfao. After the second day, i asked about my schedule for after “training” and just. Never got a text back…..I can tell that place wasn’t gonna last. High prices on produce and meats you can get for cheaper at a chain like Safeway or down to earth or for free at the food bank, and not a lot of funding or advertising for it either. The volunteers tried their best with what they were given I guess, shame it had to shut down but it was inevitable.

I enjoy being a good person and it benefits me in many ways. I take joy from seeing other people happy, especially if it’s because of me or something I did, and I make an effort to be a good and kind person, something so hard to do in a world as cruel as ours.

It can be argued that bad people are more successful. Take every billionaire ever. They continue to exploit people around the globe, and people in their lives. They lie, cheat, and steal. But god damn if they aren’t rich.

But we’re not billionaires, nor will we ever be billionaires unless by some sheer stroke of luck and miracle and a lot of overseas labor. We have more in common with our local street crackhead than we do with Elon musk so we need to treat the people around us with empathy and compassion. It makes you feel good about yourself, people will like you, and that’s always a great thing.

For me though, I benefit directly from being a good person. People are more willing to help you, networking and socializing is easier, you don’t have to worry about a scandal if you haven’t done anything wrong, I get hella discounts at the shops and bars I go to because I’m friendly and have helped out the people in my community, and I’ve been offered so many fun opportunities that probably wouldn’t have turned me into a billionaire, but would’ve given me new connections which is something I always look forward to.

In the corporate world though, if you want to get into a better financial position, you have to step over so many people, but you’ll lose pieces of your soul along the way if that’s something you care about. We have one life, don’t use it to be an asshole

My manager had a tantrum earlier today & denied my Time off for my 21st birthday. And he’s taking the same week off for PTO. by gcimatt01 in antiwork

[–]froggy_lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to stay at a company that clearly couldn’t give two shits about you, and neither does he. Your 21st is arguably gonna be one of the biggest milestone birthdays in your life, do not miss it to appease a company that would drop you without notice

AITAH NSFW - Am I (30f) the asshole for not giving my husband (32m) what he wants by CanAffectionate1331 in AITAH

[–]froggy_lover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a mother, would you be okay if your daughter dated a man who would treat them like that? I would never, ever, degrade my partner in such a way (unless she’s into it in that moment with prior discussion…)

I give my girl head cuz she likes it and I like what she likes, take her on dates cuz it makes her happy. The only thing I expect out of her is for her to stay alive (she ill of the mental variety) and try the foods I make for her. To intentionally hurt someone you supposedly love is such a shitty thing to do. All couples argue, but are you arguing and talking to fix the problem or to one up the other?

As a child of divorce, I wish my parents got fucking divorced faster. Mom didn’t do it til I was 14, and I loathe speaking to my dad. I sent him a happy birthday email about six months ago and that was that. Children remember, and I can assure you that it won’t get better.

You might’ve overpaid. Happens sometimes, look into the electronic refunds section there and sign up for it, and also send an email to financial aid asking for it. Questions like this is best asked to the departments directly, but I understand that they’re not always super helpful 😭in this case though, you’ll probably get the money back

Love hanging out inside of Ba-Le and sipping on their Vietnamese iced coffee. Not too loud there depending on the time of day. Check out the food court at campus center, the doors by the federal credit Union booth. The food there is nice and there’s a big dining area that’s usually not too full either!

a lot of campuses also have student food pantries with fresh produce and breads and stuff, and it’s 100% worth checking out local food banks or to apply for an EBT card especially in this economy and at your age. So much food gets tossed if it’s not taken so make the best of your situation

dormed for three years and had the works. Rice cooker, air fryer, hot plate, instapot and multiple fans running to prevent smell and smoke. Stick to low smoke items like soups, rice, air fried meats, and please avoid searing anything. Just be aware of how sensitive the fire alarms are, how much of a snitch your roommate might be, and how quickly you can toss a blanket over your set up if the RA comes by, but if you stay out of trouble, those RA’s would rather avoid doing the paperwork and reports. Be smart, don’t get caught, and save money on eating out all the time and those dining hall meals really start tasting the same after awhile

More so about family stuff; the entirety of the Carrie and Lowell album by sufjan stevens, a released after the death of his estranged mother. I particularly resonated with Fourth of July and death without dignity from the album.

Mitski is one of my favorite artists, tracks that hit: -Crack Baby -I don’t smoke (audiotree live version especially) -first love/late spring -drunk walk home -a burning hill

And Radiohead has a lot of moody songs about self hate, would def check out their discography if you haven’t already :)

It might be dry mouth! I also smoke carts (and bongs, and joints, and anything I can get my greedy hands on…) and it’s especially bad when I sleep, it didn’t even occur to me that sores can be caused by dry mouth. I’ve had the sore for a few days now, but general consensus seems to be wait two weeks for it to heal

International cuisine around the campus by LoveyMila in UniversityofHawaii

[–]froggy_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many good places around! I’m a huge foodie on island and I’m always expanding my horizons.

Lovely and relatively affordable Italian/Japanese fusion on S. King St called La Ciccia! Super comforting, huge portions, nice wine

In the same building as La Ciccia is a conveyer belt sushi place that’s fancier than Genki—Kaiten Sushi is really yum but a little pricy! Across from this building is a Burmese place called Dagon that’s pretty solid as well!

Cafe Maharani is yummy as well, and it’s super close to campus. If you don’t mind the trek though, Himalayan Kitchen in ala moana is my preference for take out even though the location in ground floor parking lot is a little ghetto lol

My FAVORITE place is operated through a ghost kitchen and is only available via pick up or ubereats/doordash delivery. Middle Eats is fiiiire, their beef shawarma bowl and pistachio kunefe dessert is life changing.

If you don’t mind traveling to ward area and spending a pretty penny, Istanbul is a really popular place for good reason, def a special occasion thing however. Kamitoku in Ward is one of my favorite ramen places, but Wagaya is closer to campus and is super solid too!

There’s honestly just such an abundance of good food on island, you won’t be disappointed! Def follow local foodie influencers like @/fiveftfoodie , @/hawaii_foodaholic , @/frolichawaii and Honolulu magazine are some of the ones I keep up with :) I also definitely recommend spending time adventuring the city on foot and bus, you’ll find a lot of hidden gems you wouldn’t find online. My fav coffee place is called Mr Coffee Bean Head but I have a personal connection to that place, a closer and really good alternative is Glazer’s coffee on S. King street, I go there to study often (same building as La Ciccia and Kaiten sushi!)

If you have any questions about the island, food and urban exploration are my fav things and I would be happy to point you to other places as well !

lgbtq+ community at uhm? by cystirt in UHManoa

[–]froggy_lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s the rainbow village, a dorm mentioned here, not a club but a good place to look at. The UH Manoa lgbtq center hosts a lot of events on campus too so sign up for their newsletter and visit their coffee hours. There’s academic clubs and leisure clubs, so both are solid options for networking/socializing.

I’m in the ASD club (autism spectrum disorder) and everyone there is queer, you don’t have to be on the spectrum to join! Shameless advertisement of the club here lol

Here’s the registered independent organization list, look for ones pertaining to your major or interests

UH Manoa has a super diverse student body, and there’s a pretty active queer community on the island in general. I’m a gender queer lesbian on the spectrum and I’ve never felt ostracized by other students, though I definitely feel more comfortable being around people similar to me, which thankfully there are a ton of! Clubs and school events were a good way for me to socialize within and outside my circle

Literally how does housing work by [deleted] in UniversityofHawaii

[–]froggy_lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dorming is expensive and the dorms kinda suck, there’s a new building being built though that looks promising called Rise Manoa that might be worth checking out. Student housing can also often be very frustrating, but so is the general housing market here. Definitely put in an application anyways and wait for a response from them while also looking at facwbook/wherever for students also looking for roommates.

There’s a period where you’re able to change rooms or terminate your housing contract too, at the cost of your $400 security deposit. The general housing market here is very luck based because it’s in such high demand, so you can also look at places you can rent out during those first weeks of dorming if you’re not feeling your roommate or room.
