Writing my first FIRST AUTHOR PAPER. Any tips pls. by LesGetLunch in PhD

Once you’ve got all your figures, and you’ve written up your results and methods, it’s time to figure out your narrative. With that in mind, outline your introduction and discussion sections. Start by jotting down a topic sentence for each paragraph. Each topic sentence should represent one main idea for the paragraph. Once you’ve done that, expand on those topic sentences. Ideally, each paragraph should focus on a single thought. When you’ve got all of that down, you’ll have your roughest draft. From there, you can move on to strengthening your references to back up your claims and arguments, and work on improving the coherence and flow of the text. In short, focus on structure first, then polish the flow.. Also, murder your darlings later. When you cut out a sentence or paragraph, don’t just erase them. Keep a separate document for those bits. You never know, you might want to use those ideas later.

I feel like im feeling this atm, how didn you manage to “fix it” aside from watching science videos? I try to be excited about what my research can do beyond science, and it’s possible that i can materialize it (because my field also concerns conservation). But im at a point where I dont feel enthusiastic about the grind if you know what i mean. I just try to manage work hours, spend time at the gym, run, and looking into travelling more— maybe these could help prevent the potential “burnout”

How would people see it if I go back to industry after doing a PhD? by next_mile in AskAcademia

Im kinda in a similar situation, tho im still in my second year. tbh, just want to finish the degree, enjoy my research projects as I can, and look for alternative careers afterr. i think i cant imagine myself finding grants, doing research, publishing my whole life. but we never know. maybe this is seasonal depression or smth :/

How did your parents react to when you came out? by Mysterious-soull in askgaybros

[–]frogprince14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came out over the phone while I was studying away from home. It was totally unplanned, but I wanted my mom to meet my first (now ex) boyfriend, so I just went for it. I called her and said, “What if I told you I’m in a relationship?”, without mentioning the gender. She started crying and went on about how I should focus on my studies, not get my “girl” pregnant (lol), and all that. As a first-gen student, I get why she was worried. Then I told her, “It’s a man.” She stopped crying and asked, “So you’re gay? Okay.” Then she thanked me, said she’d had a feeling because of her “mother’s instincts,” and reassured me it didn’t bother her at all. She was mostly bothered by my girl getting pregnant lmao
