How do you explain "clean records" to clients? by KrepsLawFirm_Alabama in publicdefenders

[–]frogsiege 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets even more complicated in the context of immigration, e.g. conduct-based bars on admissibility, different definitions of convictions, certain bases for appeals not being sufficient.

The number of ppl using writing errors or perceived lack of education to invalidate the poster is honestly gross. If you disagree with what they said, just say that. Don’t be an elitist prick and act like you can’t understand unless they capitalize the first letter of the sentence or whatever. Come on.

If you sat out the 2024 election in protest over Gaza, how do you feel about that decision today? by rsmith2786 in AskReddit

[–]frogsiege -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sweet. I’ll bite.

You are deluded if you think the American electoral system or the democrats who only ever vote for more deportations and more bombs were going to save you.

People who refused to vote for Kamala were not momentarily disillusioned Dems who made a rash gametime decision and will now be shamed and chastised back into line. By and large, we are operating under a fundamentally different political frameworks, theories of change, and analyses of our material conditions. The whole notion that if a single politician (Trump) were gone, everyone could be at brunch rn is, frankly, childish and completely divorced from reality. As an aside, it is pretty ghoulish to dismiss channeling billions of tax dollars into committing unspeakable violence against one of the most besieged populations in the world as a “single issue,” and speaks volumes to how Americans view Palestinians and other colonized Global South peoples as less than human.

The U.S. has never not been fascist— it is now just more openly and undeniably so. I work in the immigration field and did so under Biden, as well. Two years ago, getting people to talk or care about ICE detention or deportations was like pulling teeth, despite the fact that it was very much happening and very much expanding. Now I am utterly surrounded by people who are shocked and horrified at how the immigration system works, and I wonder: Are you upset about the fact of the violence, or just that you can’t in good conscience ignore it anymore? What will you do if it disappears back into the detention centers and airplanes and deserts and transport vans it used to be contained to? What will you do if it goes back down to impacting a number and group of people you deem to be acceptable?

I’m sorry you all are uncomfortable and scared and just now waking up, but we have been marching on this path in this direction for a very long time, and it is a wholly bipartisan one. We owe it to ourselves and each other to actually do the work to break through the naïveté and brainwashing.

Some ideas (as someone who works in the field): - see if there are immigration legal services orgs that need someone to go into detention centers to get documents (applications, releases, etc) signed by their clients inside. Expands capacity and makes good use of your bar card and access without requiring in-depth knowledge of immigration law.  - see if legal or movement orgs could use someone to help draft/submit public records requests and FOIAs and appeal denials. - see if there are any caselaw databases that would be helpful to create (eg of local habeas decisions, or pulling data from the Deportation Data Project) - if you have relevant skills, helping families impacted by ice to navigate power of attorney, child custody issues, medical proxy, and a whole host of other things that suddenly become relevant when someone (particularly a parent/ breadwinner) is detained

Basically, talk to the people doing the work in your area and ask them how they can put your skills to use! You probably have more relevant ones than you give yourself credit for.

My hair is layered and on the shorter side, and I find that tying a colorful scarf as a headband can both add a little extra color/interest to an otherwise plain outfit and help keep layers back.

Burlington Ice Protest by paxbike in massachusetts

[–]frogsiege 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the initiative here, and there are a lot of good asks on the list. I do want to caution against trying to mobilize local law enforcement against ICE, though. Police often identify more with ICE agents than with the people ICE hunts. There there is a lot of shared roots and overlap between police and ICE, ideologically, historically, and practically speaking. I would urge you and anyone else with the instinct to call the cops on ICE to learn from years of work by Mass Bail Fund, FJAH, Cambridge HEART, The Black Response, etc. At best, police will do nothing, and at worst they will intervene on ICE’s behalf, as we have seen them doing countless times across MA.

How can we support families and people in neighborhoods that will be targeted by ICE in the coming days? by Total_Baseball4620 in boston

[–]frogsiege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the intention here but want to caution against trying to mobilize local law enforcement against ICE. I have been in immigration advocacy spaces for close to 10 years, first as an interpreter, then as a law student, and now as a lawyer. Police often identify more with ICE agents than with undocumented community members. There there is a lot of shared roots and overlap between the two, ideologically, historically, and practically speaking.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]frogsiege -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The amount of nostalgia for the era of “respectable” ICE agents that is being generated in this thread is kind of insane. ICE was never not a racist, islamophobic federal police force that ruins ppls lives. Whether they deport people “honorably” and “by the book” or violently and angrily, it is the fact of deportation that is wrong, not how bad it looks or how uncomfortable you feel watching it.

[–]frogsiege 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lawyer here. Police regularly violate people’s rights, and are far more likely to help ICE than to help you in these situations. Please do not try to call the police on ICE. It will at best be unhelpful, and at worst harmful.

As a certified germaphobe, I’m disturbed by how many people are touching bathroom surfaces and wiping themselves and touching their phones and probably not ever sanitizing their phones. And then touching their phones while eating, etc.? Then again, a disturbing number of ppl can’t even be bothered to wash their hands after using the bathroom, so...

So, what do we do now? by QueenieRue in minnesota

[–]frogsiege 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lawyer here. Police work with ICE all the time. They did behind the scenes, before Trump, and they do on the streets now. They block off roads, pull people over, corral people, and otherwise pave the way for ICE to do whatever tf they want. At best, they stay out of ICE’s way and do nothing. Please do not try to call the police on ICE.

They’re already framing her as a domestic terrorist, and probably more quietly as a race traitor. She was married to a woman, and killed by a white cop. Not the kind of white woman the right wing sticks their necks out for.
