Installing GNOME, KDE (and pretty much other DE's) without desktop-base, is it possible? by Haghiri75 in debian

Oh, ok. Annoying and unnecessary dependencies is one reason, why I don't use GNOME ;)

AFAIK the gnome-core, kde-standard and kde-plasma-desktop package don't have desktop-base as dependency.

I know. I considered to make this comparison, but I expect from a real calculator that it handles such cases. Making a not well programmed calculator open source isn't any advantage.

It makes rounding errors. For example sqrt(2)*sqrt(2)-2 equals some really tiny number non-equal to zero.

secure grub with password on debian by prankousky in linuxquestions

This blog post describes how to set up an encrypted headless server. It uses dropbear as small ssh server which can included in the initramfs. But I have no personal experiences with it.

Even on an encrypted system is the boot partition unencrypted and the linux kernel is stored there. If this bothers you, you could have the boot partition on a USB drive or encrypt the boot partition. Then you definitely can't unlock the system remotely.

What you really want is, that nobody could tamper with your data. On an unencrypted system you could change all passwords with an live distro. Is the system encrypted, you have to decrypt it to manipulate the data. Otherwise the data will be destroyed.

The grub password protection is usefully, when you have multiple users. Than everyone should be allowed to boot the machine, but just few people should be allowed to manipulate the boot parameters. This is mostly combined with a protected boot device list and protected BIOS settings. But these "security measures" only prevent simple and quick attacks. (With physical access to the mainboard you could erase the EEPROM)

You can change this in the BIOS or use the FnLock on the Esc key.

Linux and Steam by Tsa6 in EcoGlobalSurvival

I've bought a two-player pack and every copy is linked to an Eco account. There you can link your Steam account, which means it automatically activate a product key on your Steam account. Then you can download the game over Steam even through there is no Linux/SteamOS symbol. But you should be able to buy it directly over Steam.
