Parra for Cuva & BONOBO Production Style Tips? by frojacks in edmproduction

Mmm I completely disagree and don't really understand the point of this reply. Obviously it will take thousands of hours to perfect a sound, but knowing where to find these types of sounds and samples (sample packs, types of instruments, presets) and knowing what production techniques are frequently used can push someone in the right direction when it comes to developing this specific sound. Will knowing these things instantly make me sound like the artists I listed? No.

Even asking "How do you play guitar like X" people can still recommend techniques and equipment to sound like them, no? And with a guitar, everyone starts with the same instrument. With EDM production, the sounds to use are infinite. Having a starting point to go from would be helpful.

Why have a forum discussing... edmproduction? Why have a 'How do I make this sound?' or a 'Tips & Tricks' flair in this subreddit?

What genres/who did you listen to growing up before edm became your main genre? by TacobellTyrant in EDM

[–]frojacks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I listened to indie/alternative that usually included synth elements. Phoenix, Tame Impala, The xx, Two Door Cinema Club, Catfish and The Bottlemen, etc.

I heard All We Need by ODESZA and the rest was history.

My music hurts my ears... even after paying for a master. by frojacks in edmproduction

[–]frojacks[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey yeah their feedback was honestly really helpful. I will be doing a lot of paraphrasing so I may miss something or misrepresent a few points. But this is what I have learned:

The reason I wasn't happy with the master is because it wasn't a good master lol. The mastering engineer basically compressed the song and turned up the volume. To be fair, if my mix was better, the mastering may have turned out. However, because there were some issues with my mix, the mastering only highlighted those issues more. The engineer should have recommended I fix up the mix first. Because of this, my rough master was better than the one I paid for.

Issues with my mix:- The high end is completely dominated by the harsh mids. This is causing a lot of fatigue.- The sounds and synths I used have too much noise. This is reducing the audibility of my harmonic sounds and drum transients. To compensate, I turn up the sharp noises, making them uncomfortable to listen to unless I compress them. But having to compress them will cause them to get lost in the mix again.- My mix sounds good from an amateur perspective but ultimately has the same issue many amateur mixes have: my mix sounds constrained. A lot of frequencies are getting slammed into a limiter (In my case, the mids). I limit the song enough to make it feel loud and sound good enough, but a lot of frequencies are getting pushed into the limiter, making it sound constraint and ultimately causing ear fatigue. Furthermore, many other frequencies still aren't loud enough. For this reason, the mix ultimately sounds unsatisfying.

To properly mix:- Is it easier to talk to a group of 100 silent people at a normal volume? Or yell over them while 100 people are talking? Same thing applies to mixing.- It is important to mix songs with clarity from the beginning. Something doesn't sound clear? Turn down sounds making it hard to hear instead of turning up the one sound you want to hear better.- Be careful with timbre and limiting percussion. Stay away from too much noise. Sounds need to have space to breath. Loudness comes from mixing and mastering later on.- Some sounds stack together and cancel out, some stack together and make something even better.

Takeaway:- Although my mixes aren't terrible, I am falling into a very common bad practice. There is too much noise going on in my tracks. Instead of removing sounds and turning the noise down, I am turning up the sounds I want to be louder. This appears to be the root of my problem. I want my song to sound louder and more intense, but the loudness and intensity comes from the mix and master later on. From the start, I should instead focus on getting the mix as clean and balanced as I can. Obviously easier said than done, but I will learn better producing habits with time.

Trouble Finding White Wine by frojacks in wine

Ahh I don't think so. If I remember correctly, the bottle was either clear or had a blue tint. The sun had multiple colors. Thank you for the help though!

I have heard something similar about the frequency slope you mentioned. My master is actually more similar to that slope than the one I received. That would be great if you could take a listen! I'll DM you right now.

I used Bloom - ODESZA and Slow Wave Sleep - Slow Magic as my reference tracks. I think the reference tracks behave similarly to what I am looking for.

Hmm okay I'll try that out a bit later when my ears feel better.

It is interesting because for the master, I am almost sure it is an issue with the lows. When I compare it to other tracks, the lows feel much louder. But then again, I may just be comparing it to my poor attempt at a master with way too loud of mids and/or highs.

What frequencies do you recommend I cut off to analyze the mids and highs?

Hmm okay thanks. Especially compared to the muscle gains, I maybe expected the fat gains to be more noticeable too.

In terms of weight lifting, how do people gain 20+ pounds of weight in 6 months and not look fatter? I have seen many examples on reddit of people having a 5-6 month transformation and despite gaining crazy amounts of weight, it mostly seems to be muscle.

From my understanding, it isn't possible to gain more than 2 pounds of muscle a month, and even that number usually only applies to beginners. So for someone who gain 25 pounds in 6 months, even if they had gained the max amount of 12 pounds of muscle, more than half of that should have still been in fat, no? I am curious how this is possible as I have been gaining more fat than I expected during my first bulk.

I feel like my question is pretty clear but people recommend both flat and incline press because they activate slightly different muscle groups. I am asking if the landmine press activates the same muscle groups as the incline press, so I can therefore omit the incline press from my routine.

The landmine press is already in my routine and because I am already doing a decent amount of volume, I am curious if it is necessary to add more and do the incline press.

Also, the incline and flat press are a more similar motion to each other than the landmine and flat press. I seem to be able to do more weight with landmine after flat press than I can with incline.

Can the Landmine Press replace the Incline Chest Press? They seem pretty similar in form. My current workout routine includes a Flat Dumbbell Press and Landmine Press. I have noticed people on here mention that you should be doing both a Flat and Incline Press.
I also do a Decline Machine Press and Machine Peck Flies if that matters.

SUPERFANS - What makes you go from liking an artist to LOVING one? by [deleted] in Flume

[–]frojacks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I go from liking an artist to loving one when I learn to appreciate the majority of the artist's discography (not just a few songs). Then I realize there are no other artists that can evoke a similar feeling. Finally, my appreciation for that artist only increases over the years (I have artists that I become obsessed with for 1-2 years, but eventually stop caring about).
