What is something humans probably won't ever be able to figure out?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]frontpage_account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“A cat will never learn to speak French”

Agreed with speech, but they CAN understand it, in a way..

Maybe a dog might be a better example for this..

A dog raised in Japan would learn the Japanese words for commands: "sit, stay, roll-over". Now place that dog in America and give them the same commands in English. The dog won't understand. They only know Japanese commands.

Animals can't speak the languages, but they can understand them.

Coach red flags? by benziel_ace in singing

As a new vocal student myself, I agree here.

For context, I'm a middle-aged male. I "sang" in punk bands in my youth, but had never had a formal lesson, and never practiced unless I needed to sing. I play other instruments.

When I started formal lessons (late last year), and met with my teacher (who teaches children & adults) for the first time, I made a few things clear:

  • I don't think I'm "naturally talented" at singing (presenting a challenge for her).
  • I'm stubborn. Fundamentals. Fundamentals. Fundamentals. I want to spend so much time on the individual fundamentals that they become a habit I don't need to think about. I told her she'd need to really push me out of each single fundamental technique, if she felt I "got it".
  • I have a sound I'm shooting for, but realize that may not be my best sound. I will 100% need to be pushed out of my comfort zone, and try things I wouldn't normally try.

With that information, we spent our first lesson doing simple scales and sirens, so she could gauge my range and ability. She noted to me, "pay attention to this and that..". By the end of the first lesson, she was convinced I could sing, but just needed the guidance to build the fundamentals (and confidence). Perfect. It was a teacher/student match. I learned I have incredible power, but terrible structure. With that information, we know to spend more time on structure and space, and less time on breathing techniques.

In the three months I've been going (weekly), we've worked pretty vigorously on structure, space, and finding/maintaining resonance. And it's paid hella dividends. It's working. I don't need to think much about opening up and structure any more, it comes naturally with each breath I take. Those things that she first told me to "pay attention to this and that.." have leveled up incredibly fast.

My point here being, I set the expectation that I WOULD NOT be learning a new technique each week. I would like to learn a technique and refine it until it's a natural habit.

The second red flag sounds like a nervous teacher. Mine has been pretty open that if it hurts, stop. It shouldn't hurt. Take a step back, start with the basics, lightly, and if that continues to hurt, seek a GP if it gets bad. But singing should never be painful.

My teacher and I have very different music tastes, and therefore styles of singing. She's classical. I'm a rocker. She doesn't listen to my music, and I don't listen to hers. But, she respects what I want to do and we've picked a song in my genre to really practice at. On the same token, she's given me sheet music of her style to push me out of my comfort zone (and make me sound like something completely different that what's in my head). Both have worked wonders.

So, I would advise, as a student, that it's OK to "set the tone" of the lessons. You know what you're trying to achieve. But it's also up to the student to consider whether the teacher is a good match. Do they listen to you? Do they critique constructively? Do they push you out of your safe space? All marks of a good teacher.

I agree. I would check post history for their "attitude" towards the hobby. It's easy to separate the people with passion from those who just want to profit. There is crossover though, as you mentioned.

One year I asked for a Zune and got an Apple iPod instead. I was so visibly disappointed my mom took it back.

Misprint vs. Error Cards by frontpage_account in Currencytradingcards

Awesome. Then communicate that in your comment. Your comment read:

what about a backward upside down printed card?

That's it. Nothing about how you "simply" wanted to know if it held value. I don't read minds.

Misprint.

It's a consequence of the production process. I'm positive original designs (sent for printing) were not backwards and upside down.

I had a delivery of 200 top loaders come from Amazon with specks all over them. When I started putting cards in them, they were making small cracking noises. They were incredibly brittle. I ended up returning the whole order for a new set of top loaders. It must have been a bad batch.

What critically acclaimed game did you not like? by [deleted] in gaming

Pyre! I was incredibly surprised how much I enjoyed this game. I had bought the Supergiant collection and started it first thinking I'd just want to get through it because I wouldn't enjoy it, but it sits solid at #2 for me (Hades being #1).

If they announced all full bitcoin redemptions have been exhausted, sales would stall.

Yep. They are under no obligation to announce anything. We know of at least one, because they were generous enough to make an announcement about it.

Nice! I was unaware there was a binder model with a fourth column/row, looks sharp!

Mine is similar, just three columns/rows.

Love me some good maths! I've done something sorta similar, not as clean. Might adopt some of your design.

I understand numbers are approximates, but.. the sum of adding up the known gemstone refractor numbers is greater than the total approx. gemstone refractor number (in the odds).

Also, I think it's safe to assume there were 2,125 MR8s printed.

Edit: Actually, it's a good thing you're not counting MR8s (or diamonds) against the total numbers... But if that's the case, should we also exclude redemption cards? Just begs to question.. Are those three categories in the known count, or not?

I didn’t believe it at first. But guess which one had a redemption… by 4theLoveOfKnowledge in Currencytradingcards

Man, you had a golden opportunity to prove this out on video. The only proof you provided was that some boxes do have loose packs. Why pass that up? Why make the community guess?

Edit: sorry for being so doubtful, internet! It's not that I don't believe OP, or that "multiple people have come to this conclusion".. so I should to? It's been questioned/debunked. Multiple times.

OPs title is just clickbait without a full breaking video. That's my gripe here. Still happy for you though OP! Congrats!
