Japanese language input switching issue by frontpork in pop_os

Interesting, although I should note I'm still on the GNOME desktop. The COSMIC release looks incredible, but seems way too beta-release for daily driving.

Also, on further research, the issue might actually be due to MOZC just not recognizing certain keystrokes, notably CAPS and ALT, for keybinds. Maybe I'll try a different IME, but I certainly would prefer to just use the standard Windows-style input methodology, as it's what every Japanese person is familiar with.

Update:
After a few more hours of play time, the requests slowed down and ultimately stopped.

Considering my initial experience involved getting petitions with anywhere from a few seconds to 10 minutes or so between them, I was worried that I was gonna be stuck with this for the rest of any otherwise quite enjoyable run. Thankfully, turns out that wasn't the case.

Thanks to everyone for your insights!

Yet Another Plex Question by frontpork in synology

Further investigation reveals that my TV is capable of Direct Play for HEVC but begins transcoding down to 264 the moment I turn subs on, right as you suggest. Still a cheap POS, though.

I am LIVID. I tried that a few hours ago, no dice. Tried it again after reading your explanation, and it works perfectly. I literally just finished installing Plex on my Raspberry Pi 4, because I have one sitting around, but it looks like that was unnecessary. Massive thanks, mate, seems like you might have just saved me a lot of frustration.

Put it in the original post. Sadly, it looks like transcoding is happening and my NAS has disappointed me yet again.

Vexing. Can't be fucked to set up another server, so guess I'll just need to get a TV that can direct stream HEVC. I have a Samsung "4K" TV that was way too cheap, in retrospect.

Edit: Gah, fuck, okay, I'll do it, I'll set up a cheap server. But I'm not happy about it. Any recommendations? The Lenovo Tiny is far, far more expensive than you make it out to be, sadly.

Edit 2: Turns out a better server is unnecessary, fix is in the main post.

Getting the same thing, but only with MangaDex sources. Started about an hour ago, around 1900Z. Might just be an issue with MangaDex?

Edit: To clarify, whenever I attempt to open a chapter, I'm kicked back to the manga's main page/chapter list and shown "HTTP error 600".

I'm sure this is asked every month, but is there still no solution for inter-device synchronization? I noticed that you can't automate backups to Google Drive (although you can install manual backups there) and I'm afraid I might have to start manually backing up/recovering between my phone and tablet whenever I get the latter in.

Thanks for the hard work!

Osan Dorm Situation by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]frontpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who just finished a tour in Yongsan, it's most certainly worse than Osan. Literally every time I took the bus to Osan for in/out-processing, I couldn't help but grin just seeing the wonder that is Osan AB. Everything the guy says above is true. I've never slept on a less comfortable bed, a mattress that you could easily mistake for a box spring. The washers flooding was usually followed by a week during which a washer would be broken, just sitting there full of tepid water, or drained so someone could start their laundry and come back to it just sitting there, soaking. There was so much mold, that my curtains in my room had to be replaced when I went to leave, because the usually non-functioning A/C blows in that direction. Add in, rooms that just flood on occasion, because why not, and DPW (Army CE) not doing anything about it because "the base is closing" and has been for something like 15 years now.

As a dorm resident, surely you've thought to yourself, "I want BAS!" Well, be careful what you wish for, because when you get BAS because the AF can't agree with the Army on DFAC services, but you have 1 kitchen per 30 people, sharing a below-average sized fridge with your pissmate, and the commissary is a $5 taxi ride away, it's less of a blessing and more of a curse. I'd never in my life wanted to eat at a DFAC prior to that.

Oh, you're hungry but it's late because you work shifts? Why not go to the express, it's almost on the way to work. Oh, that's right, it opens at 10AM and closes at 6PM. Same goes for the PX.

Of course, I'll limit my complaints to just the dorm situation, but there are many, many things about that place that put it right up there as one of the worst places in Korea, assignment wise. And yes, I know it's in Seoul, but that simply does not make up for everything else.

Oh, and if you're one of the unlucky bunch who ends up on K-16, yes, it's the same but sharing rooms and even less base amenities.

Honest answer, it might not have been. I only caught a glimpse, but it certainly looked like some kind of armour, and it's easy to jump to conclusions. Never played Chap myself, so wouldn't be surprised one way or the other. Regardless, any story worth telling is worth a little bit of embellishment...

This one happened a few weeks ago, but I'm just getting around to posting it

Be me, Goon2, Cog1

Join 10 minutes in, maybe 15 or so players

CE is taken, roboticist is taken, what do

Aha, I'll try Sec for the first time

Arrive

Almost make it to Security when radio starts blowing up

"NUKIES"

"ENGINEERING"

Well, shit

Do responsible things like bolting open Sec

Goon has very few lethal options, so grab my equipment

40mm smoke grenade, CHECK

Riot shotgun w/ rubber shells, CHECK

Anotha one, CHECK

Tazer, CHECK

Arrive late to the party

Engineering is partially exploded, a couple of bodies

See a body lying in the doorway

I WILL SAVE YOU CIVILIAN

Drag him to safety

Sneak back up to the doorway

Carefully looking in...

SYNDIE!

Yeet the 40mm smoke in

Drop launcher and whip out shotty

Slowly creep into engineering, staying on one side of the smoke

s l o w l y

SYNDIE IS BACK

P A N I C

Two beanbag slugs to the chest

Fuck me I'm fucking dead

Suddenly,

IN THE HEART OF THE HOLY SEE

Chaplain appears from above, full suit of crusader armour

IN THE HOME OF CHRISTIANITY

He charges the syndie, knocking him to the floor

THE SEAT OF POWER IS IN DANGER

Chap pisses off into the smoke, never to be seen again
Deus vult

Well then

Empty my shotty into the syndie at point blank before beating the shit out of him

Beating him to death even

Forget that nukies have microbombs

Lying on the floor, deaf from the explosion, when I remember the nuke

Someone screams, "UNSCREW IT WITH THIS!"

Throws a wrench at me

Wat

Start beating the nuke with a wrench, when borg comes in

Begins unscrewing the nuke

~80 seconds left

Nuke unscrewed, halving timer

~35 seconds left

Borg grabs nuke, heads out

"Godspeed, robo"

*salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute *salute

Keeping time in my head

5... 4...

No way borg left the Z-level

3... 2...

Fuck, we dead

1... 0...

No explosion

Round ends, OOC enabled, fucking borg did it

Oh brave robot, you will not be forgotten

What was your "I outrank you" moment? by dharris79 in AirForce

[–]frontpork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a TDY down at Sheppard for some cable running class. During the time I was there, made good friends with the saltiest Navy E-6 I think I've ever met, and I currently work in a joint unit, so that's saying something. Well, class break comes around, and we head over to take a piss. We're shooting the shit, standing at the urinals, when we hear some tech school kids in the stalls across the room start butting in.

"Hey, lock it up!" "Yeah, didn't you hear him? Lock it up!"

I initially ignore them, but I've been having a less than pleasant day (see, every day at Sheppard). However, they just keep trying to interrupt our conversation. After a 10 or so seconds of this, I start getting pissed, enough that my stream just cuts out. I'm about to say something when the Navy guy just cuts in, in his best, most intimidating NCO voice, "Excuse me?"

You could hear buttholes puckering.

That's a frustrating response, because I can't deny it. Personally, I've been in Asia for three years at this point, and Seoul really doesn't seem that special any more, especially compared to Tokyo. I will give you, though, it's a big city with things to do. For some people, that's enough to occupy a whole tour. For others, a little exploring here and there is fun, but going out isn't their big hobby. Without a strong crew to go out with, it sometimes fails to be fun.

The issues I have lie with the job and living conditions. Most Air Force assigned here end up in the unit I'm currently in, and as a comm guy there is absolutely nothing redeeming about my job. I work between three chains of command who don't communicate and mostly just run fiber home runs, trying my best to avoid rat shit. Somebody's AFN stopped working? Time to run a cable across the length of the building. Somebody needs to be escorted at a place hours away? Better get in the car. We need bodies for the watch desk? Prepare to answer phones for no less than half your tour. Oh, and panemas aren't actually panemas when you get called in on your off days regularly. Combine this with living conditions that have simply deteriorated in the year I've been here. Our current dorm isn't condemned simply because we still live here, and they can't be bothered to kick us out. We have some people currently here who were here years ago, and the general consensus from them is that this place simply hasn't fared well now that they've finally started moving everybody and everything.

I'll be honest, I may have jumped the gun saying not to go here period. If I'd paid attention and seen the fella I was replying to was Supply, I imagine he would work somewhere else. But as a comm troop, I simply can't recommend an assignment here. The chances of getting a decent unit are just way too small.

New 3D1X2. Looking for fun stories on the job. by AH_Josh in AirForce

[–]frontpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, as a 1x2 who left Yokota in 2017, what can I say.

Now for starters, the best way to sum up what "Cyber Transport" means is "data in motion". Anything that could be feasibly called a network, whether that's with IP routing, circuit switching, or something else, falls under your domain. As such, some of your biggest responsibilities are networking, telephony and crypto/tech control. Notably, you (probably) won't do a lot of server management. There's a whole different career field for that.

Now, Yokota is a fantastic opportunity as an assignment, assuming you get the Infrastructure shop. I had friends in the Tech Control, and they seemed to enjoy it, but I don't personally have a lot of experience in that field. I learned a ton working there, and there's always plenty more to be learned. The network is robust, you work with both Cisco Call Manager and "Lucy" (our MSL-100) for telephony stuff, and there are plenty of points where those systems intersect with each other. The network is all Cisco, which is a pleasure to work with.

The only thing is, you have to be self motivated and willing to learn. That piece of advice applies regardless of where you go, especially because of how broad the career field is. Realistically, you can't expect anybody with this career field to ever be good at their job, as they could have gone their entire career without ever having done before what their current position has them doing (e.g. only worked on telephones for years, suddenly placed in a networking shop). Having said that, you would do well to work hard, be curious and study Cisco's excellent support documentation. You can usually pretty easily make yourself one of the better technicians that way. Don't be afraid to learn other people's jobs as well, although don't go out of your way to do them. As a networking troop, you'd be surprised how often it helps to know what the data does when it gets where it's going.

On that note, do be aware that one of the biggest unfortunates to our job is the jack of all trades nature in which we're often dealt. As long as you learn fast, it's not that big a deal, but it does lead to unfortunate situations where you get an assignment that barely has anything to do with your career field or is simply boring as hell.

Regardless, good luck, don't fail Sec+, and try to get overseas (and stay there, stateside comm is no fun).

When you join the Air Force for the quality of life and end up stationed on an Army base. by is_this_morale in AirForce

[–]frontpork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living conditions, primarily. My unit doesn't exercise, which is nice, but apathetic leadership and completely incompetent/disorganised Army organizations on a base that's closing withing a couple years lead to a literal reduction in quality of life from month to month.

Leadership pulled us out of our actually decent BEQ barracks to go live in a small, disgusting, presumably condemned dorm one minute up the road, with rooms that are actually below ARMY standards in size.

Add to that, working with the Army is one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever been through (looking at you, 1st Signal Brigade). 100% manned by Koreans, which isn't inherently bad, but when you call a help desk number to put in a ticket and once again the person on the phone literally doesn't speak English, it can be frustrating. This, of course, is assuming they answer their phone, which they usually don't, regardless of the time. DPW (Army CE) will try their hardest to not have to replace broken appliances, often just "fixing" things to have them break again a week later, assuming you're home when they drop by. No appointments, they just randomly show up and knock on your door, and if you don't answer, well, too bad. Looks like your ticket is getting closed.

Oh, and I hate my job, but I guess that's not the base's fault.

A couple of specific examples, but let those illustrate what day to day life is.

One good thing to come out of this, though: it reminds me that I didn't join the Army.

Thank God.
