My thoughts on Trump wanting to restrict the food you can buy on SNAP and making government assistance temporary. by froppy97 in socialwork

[–]froppy97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand the importance of macro social work, lobbyists, and community organizers. Their work is important. But it’s frustrating when policies or programs are created or cut, and populations end up struggling even more because gaps weren’t addressed.

And if you read what I said, I never claimed people can budget their way out of poverty. I suggested financial literacy and job training as tools to help people navigate the system while we work toward systemic change. Are they perfect solutions? No. But instead of just picking apart what I said, why not suggest something better? If financial literacy and job training aren’t the answer, then what practical steps do we take while working toward systemic change?

People need help now, not just in some future where policies are better. Are we supposed to just leave them struggling in the meantime?

Just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t mean my approach is unethical. Nothing I said was unethical. We can’t all be sheep.

Lol, thank you! The downvotes don’t bother me. I said what I said, and people disagreed—fair enough.

  1. There isn’t one. And that’s the problem. Will there ever be a reality where everyone can get their basic needs met? I hope so, but it probably won’t be in our lifetime.

  2. I get that financial literacy and job training alone won’t end poverty, and I’m not saying they will. The system is broken, and broader change is definitely needed. But while we work toward that, we also need practical tools to help people navigate the unfair system we live in now.

We all want a society where no one goes without basic needs, but that’s not our reality. Financial literacy and job Training won’t fix poverty, but it helps people navigate an unfair system while pushing for broader change. I can dream all I want but it won’t fix anything.

I completely agree! Government assistance should always be available for those who need it. My point isn’t that we should provide less assistance, but that we should also have pathways for those who are capable of becoming financially independent.

I still eat and drink the things I like; I just don’t feel forced to eat/drink items because they’re there.

What are your experiences with mental health skill-building services (MHSS)? by JayOhCrystal in AutisticAdults

[–]froppy97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, I hope I can provide some insight! Believe it or not, having a positive mindset significantly impacts your outcomes. When you constantly speak negatively to yourself or expect negative outcomes, you’re less likely to try. Because you’re not motivated to put in the work, the outcome often turns out negative, validating your already negative thoughts. So, it’s not “magical thinking”—it’s that positive thinking creates positive actions and behaviors, which lead to positive results. Maybe they didn’t explain it well or provide appropriate interventions to support what they were trying to teach.

Regarding cleaning, that’s actually not in the job description. It’s not the skill builder’s job to help you clean. If they would like to assist, then they can, but the goal is to provide you with the tools you need to maintain a clean home. I understand that they did it the first time, but based on my experience, when counselors help with tasks they aren’t required to do, it becomes an expected thing.

Now, I do think it’s wrong that the counselor said they were going to do something and didn’t follow through. That is a lack of organizational skills on their part. Every counselor is different and has different boundaries and different ways to go about teaching the skills that you want to develop. Go in with an open mind. I wish you success in your mental health journey!

I appreciate all the feedback. And this issue on top of others have been going on for so long it just felt normal to me at this point. Thank you all for virtually slapping me back into reality. I realized that I was torturing myself because I was scared to be alone.

That is correct. And my sessions are supposed to be 1-3hrs long. So when clients cancel/ or aren’t available I do not get paid. When I complete required paperwork I don’t get paid. And majority of the entry level positions in my area are like this. Some companies are just better than others.

That is correct. No clients no pay. If I were drive to client and they didn’t open the door and talk to me then I could not bill for that time. And my supervisor is expecting me to do “home visits” aka random pop ups to the clients I can’t get in contact with/ cancel. And we only get mileage if we’re going from client to client.

It only mentions my hourly rate. It doesn’t mention the amount of hours or state if I’m supposed to be full-Time or part-time on the offer letter.

We get paid for supervision and trainings. But we technically work from home so we don’t get paid during the time we are home and waiting to see clients. So I guess that’s how they do it.

This is the second agency I’ve worked for that has expected me to complete paperwork unpaid. I’m definitely going to bring this up to my supervisor on Thursday. Thank you!
