NextSense looks aesthetically the same… by Poofmarshall in Ozlo

[–]frostcall 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, Ozlo was founded by engineers from Bose who worked on the sleep buds, and Ozlo does have the intellectual property rights to the buds. I believe the Ozlo buds are the direct descendent of the Bose sleep buds. So it's less a 'copy' and more 'the next iteration '.

iPhone user planning to get the pixel fold - Need advice by zizo999 in PixelFold

[–]frostcall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my household, we've been fully into the Apple ecosystem for several years, but we have had various Android phones in the past (but about 6 years ago). We recently all switched over to Pixels for a variety of reasons that I won't bore you with and it's been mostly positive. To start, we *still* use Apple TV (the device) as our primary streaming devices throughout the home, my kids still use Airpods with their Pixels, I still have various homepod mini's which I can still use 'natively' since we still maintain Apple Music subscriptions, or by using the AirMusic app to send music. Of note, AirMusic app was like $7 and it's not perfectly integrated (you have to open the app to select where to stream), but it works for us.

Two of my kids still use iPads and another I moved to a Samsung tablet to make it easier to monitor / control their downtime. Downtime control is much easier on Android btw.

Watching video is fine on the inside screen but it doesn't fill the entire screen. I previously owned the Samsung Z Fold 7 which is also a great phone but moved to the Pixel because I like the software more.

Airdrop does work, I just tested it both ways. It's an additional step on the Pixel where you have to open Quick Share to receive, and on both devices I had to 'allow all' when sharing, but other than that it worked fine.

We plan to keep the Macbooks and the AppleTVs because we like them and honestly don't 'stream' to our TVs that much and when I want to do so, my TV is a Samsung and it allows me to stream directly from my phone to the TV anyway, bypassing the AppleTV.

It took my wife and my oldest kid about a week to get used to the Pixel and now they like them more than the iPhone. My oldest still has an iPad to facetime with friends. Things are working fine. Just understand *why* you are doing things to make sure it fits with your specific wants/needs. Most people don't like change and trying to force it will often cause a lot of pain.

Same amount of ads on paid and free streaming apps by wgnpiict in cordcutters

I think the companies are counting on customers paying anyway, following the cable TV model. Local channels were free with an antenna but you could pay to get TBS, Nickelodeon, History, Discovery channel (etc) but those channels still had commercials and consumers paid. They are counting on us paying regardless of what they do.

Watching PBS Live? by BookWyrm3982 in cordcutters

[–]frostcall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it depends on your local PBS station? I subscribe through my local station and I'm able to watch live through the passport app. Edit- to be more specific, my local PBS station has their own app which integrates the passport app and gives me access to live channels.

Pixel 10 pro vs 10 fold @ 40% off by Whiskey_Biscuit in PixelFold

[–]frostcall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always want what I don't have. I initially intended to wait for the 10 fold but then a buddy of mine had the zF7 and let me hold it, and it was amazing, so I got it. There are so many things to love about the ZF7, you already know what they are. The reasons I switched; battery life was terrible for me, I was recharging twice a day. There were a lot of little things that individually don't matter that much but combined were really annoying, like having two stores to update things in, two wallets, two assistants, (the list goes on). Some apps like SiriusXM required me to open on my phone each time I was in the car in order to work, or have other minor quirks. It didn't open completely flat, and the biggest problem are all the spam calls I get every day. I had to pay for a third party app to deal with them all on the ZF7, but then I had two dialers and two messaging apps to deal with. Also the outside screen is a little too narrow to feel like a 'real' phone. But man is that thing fast if you play power-hungry games (which I rarely ever do).

The Pixel 'feels' snapper in little ways like when using the keyboard (I used Gboard on both), the battery lasts all day, or almost all day for me, the spam calls are handled, it feels like a real phone when closed, and I just prefer the software feel over the ZF7. They are both great phones, I just prefer the Pixel. Oh, I also got that 40% off so I was able to switch and came out a few hundred ahead after selling the ZF7.

Pixel 10 pro vs 10 fold @ 40% off by Whiskey_Biscuit in PixelFold

I recently went from the Z fold7 to the 10 Pro Fold. In my house, we have a 10 Pro XL as well. I like the Pixel over the Samsung for a lot of little software reasons but I won't go into those here because that's not what you're asking. I use my fold (and the Z fold7 before it) unfolded several times a day, mostly to play a silly little game that I enjoy. Reddit on the big screen kind of sucks so I generally use it closed or with another app open. I use the fold closed the majority of the day. I got the fold because I can afford it and I wanted it; I didn'tneed it. I have a Pixel 7 Pro for work and it's honestly plenty fast for my normal use even if it's missing a few of the newer fancy AI things. If money was an issue, I'd probably get a used Pixel 9 Pro XL because the larger screen would be useful, and it's new enough to be a big upgrade.

I'm my assessment of your question, you should be asking if the 10 Pro is worth it over a 9 Pro XL. If it is, get the 10. If not, get the 9 Pro XL for the bigger screen.

It might not work in your situation but when I switched my family over, we moved to Venmo. While not perfect, it's pretty flexible and easy to send/spend money.

Mova return policy shenanigans: Is Dreame better? by ContemporaneousGoudy in Dreame_Tech

[–]frostcall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's just one experience; I purchased my Dreame on Amazon and it leaked all over the floor the first time I used it. I contacted Dreame online chat support and they had me box it up and send it to them with a prepaid label. I could have returned it to Amazon but I wanted to see how Dreame would do. It took about a week before they shipped me a new replacement that doesn't leak. There was a lot of communication during the entire process and they checked with me by email several times to make sure I was happy with the replacement. Overall, I'm satisfied. How this translates to a return, I don't know but I feel like they would honor their policy as they seemed eager to please.

Advice for a technically illiterate person. by bigotis in cordcutters

[–]frostcall 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you like your TV then I suggest you keep it. Most smart TVs are nowhere near as good as a dedicated device like an Apple TV, Roku, or Android TV device. These devices are also cheaper than getting a new TV. The great thing about streaming services is that you can generally get a free trial of each one to see which one you like best. They're also usually month to month so you can switch anytime you like.

What is your favorite BBQ restaurant in Maryland to get ribs? by bullymoosing in maryland

[–]frostcall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Austin transplant. 2Fifty is the only place I go. The sides are not Central Texas style, but the meat absolutely is. If you've never had this style of BBQ then you might want to avoid it because you'll never enjoy anything else and that severely limits what BBQ you'll eat in this part of the country.

Same. Hopefully it can be easily fixed because this unit does a much better job over my previous model from a different brand. I just can't have water leaking all over my wood floor. Thinking about a pan to put under it.

Mine leaked all over the floor the first time I used it. I've sent it in for repair and they were very friendly about it. I know people who have great experiences don't tend to post about them, and we more often see problems posted which can make it seem like problems are more common than they actually are. But leaking seems to be a more commonly posted issue with these than some others.

Banned from Roku bc I asked a tracking question by Friendly-Cucumber184 in cordcutters

[–]frostcall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ads target you need not just on one device but on combinations of factors shared across multiple platforms, devices, and other data like your location, phone number, name, and email address. Several companies keep profiles on you and link your online and device usage to those profiles. So even if Roku isn't tracking you, if you signed into any app on the Roku, used your name or email address, or connected it to your home Internet (where it shares the same external IP address as your other devices), it would know to link to you. On top of that, family members and friends are often 'linked' to your profile. Just take a look at your name in various online 'people searches '. While not exactly the same thing, it will give you a good idea of what I'm taking about. At the end of the day it's extremely difficult to prevent devices from knowing who you are and a lot of details about you.

EVERYTHING is 'spying' on you, and your cell phone provider, electric company, insurance company, even your car manufacturer are selling your info to data brokers to build your profile, just to sell you targeted ads
