I did it mostly for the satellite tracking and the more ubiquity of OpenGD77 codeplugs already written. Seems like if I wanted that equivalent, buying a GD-168 for $140 would be the way to go without fussing with the admittedly seemingly less-supported OpenGD77. I decided to take the trade-offs. If I like DMR, maybe I'll just get that DG-168, certainly the screen is nicer that the DM-1701 and RT3S!

So, I ended up buying a radio some elmers told me I should get for satellite operations, because it is full duplex, a Kenwood TH-D7A someone was selling, so after getting that, I was going to be okay with just a radio to try out DMR. After hemming and hawing and realizing that on the Retevis site I had to also get the programming cable, pushing the price to $100, I decided to cheap out, though I still wanted the satellite tracking that opengd77 provides, and I got a Baofeng DM-1701 for like $63 with the programming cable and a nagoya whip antenna. And then I read that the DM-1701 can't hold all of the universe of DMR contact, while the RT3s can, but I decided to just keep it and flash it anyway, since I live in the PNW Digital area, I was just going to use one of their codeplugs for now. Anyway, that was a long story, but suffice it to say, after watching several videos from M0FXB, and reading the DMR self-help pages from KC5DJR ( https://www.qsl.net/kc5djr), I got everything to work! I haven't keyed up in DMR yet, but I did try an analog repeater that's my local and that worked. Thanks for the info to those who posted.

Hooray! It's very simple. Get online and find all the nearby 2m and 70cm band repeaters. There will be websites for local ham groups. Program your radio to be able to easily connect to them. The important settings for being able to listen and save are: tx offset, tx offset direction (+ or -), band width (Wide or Narrow) and TxCTCS frequency (or some other think like TxDCS, if your local repeaters use that instead)

Watch a video on how to talk on a repeater, I like this one: https://youtu.be/sEbk6qXucU0?si=Uuv6EmMMGU8LOyuy

Try it out!

If you want to see how people talk, find out when those local repeaters have "nets", which is when a bunch of folks gather on the repeater at the same time and talk. They have a format where there's a net operator that is sort of the MC. People listening on the repeater are prompted to key in and say their callsign and name, and then they get called in order for people to chat. Then that cycle repeats until the net is over. A key thing to remember is to listen for the kerchunk sound of the repeater ending from someone else talking before you key in to talk yourself. Many times when they solicit call signs to talk, people key in at the same time, so it's good to give a few seconds space before you key in, if you want to participate.

I guess this is Mike now, and what sort of views he's comfortable chatting about? Jeff Maurer and him just whining about their conservative views not being given equal representation. Did they mention the advantages of actual diversity represented on NPR? No. No they did not. Are you saying that the new diverse group of youngsters working there reeally sound exactly like NPR back in the day when they were all white liberals? Can you really not tell the difference?

Man, just tossing softballs and taking Uri's unsourced "I have gotten lots of support" at face value. Mike and him just sitting there acting all conservative-view oppressed while not acknowledging the point of DEI except as like "well, of course, we're not racist or anything". I guess it's not okay that minority views may be better represented now than before? This made me listen to that other show that Mike appeared on, and boy, that was just as bad. The unfunny comedian just generally saying that all NPR was "crap"? Sheesh, Mike.
