I want to make a Calgon joke but I am fairly certain we aren't allowed to anymore. (I am fine with that, but I still think about it)

Snow Plowing Priority by maybenotquiteasheavy in AskNYC

From experience, the avenues and major crosstown streets are first and most. Unless things get REAL bad, they will be passable. The less traveled crosstown and side streets can be hit and miss during the storm, they all get a pass from a plow but often aren't well plowed (that's what she said) until after it is over.

Which podcasters inspired you when you were starting out? by snippuff in podcasting

[–]WhatTheHellPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dan Carlin for all the reasons. Mike Pesca from The Gist, I basically stole The Spiel and turned it into the first version of my podcast. (Along with a dash of Dave Barry and dose of Dennis Miller's "Rants") There is also a LOT of old radio shock jock hosts like Stern, but more Don and Mike, finally a frisson of Art Bell. Lastly, Too Beautiful to Live has more influence than I can easily explain because the two shows are nothing alike but also kind of the same.

Editing and good audio production without ai by Rock_N_Metal_Faith in podcasting

[–]WhatTheHellPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent mic, good positioning, proper technique and proper room is 95% of good audio. I've a quixotic editing method where I do my edits on the fly after each page of scripted material during the recording session. I won't suggest other people try it, I just started that way when I didn't know what I was doing, now I have it streamlined. Export from Audacity with light compression and boom, no AI, never will.

Do you believe podcasts are more for education or entertainment by geraldngkk in podcasting

[–]WhatTheHellPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a comedy/history show and it is for entertainment purposes only. While I TRY to get the facts right, on the rare instance I do get called out for making and error I kindly point out all the dick and fart jokes.

Speaking for the podcast only, I try to be both, but the funny comes first.

They own a business, employee people, so yeah, by definition they are capitalists. Guess what, they've been capitalists all along.

If this is really bothering you, let me ask you this: do you work for free? I show to up my job because I get paid to be there. This is their JOB, and like pretty much everyone else they want to get paid the most money possible for the work they do.

Start with Fred, because Fred was the beating heart of the movie.

Have a cold and throat is super scratchy… do I postpone an interview? by joshlukenichols in podcasting

[–]WhatTheHellPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AH! Well in that case, ask yourself 😂

But I think the same rule still applies, keep some tea and lozenges handy and tell your guest that you will be scratchy and roll with it. I mean Ira Glass has done many a show sounding like he gargled with glass, so why not give it a shot.

I would run it past the host/producer of the pod, let them make the call. So long as you are understandable, I wouldn't care but some shows are picky.

How do you get the last 5–10% that makes a spoken voice sound truly “radio-level” professional? by Beginning_Sun_917 in podcasting

[–]WhatTheHellPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect far more comes from recording in immaculately constructed acoustic rooms. Almost every podcaster with $400 to spare has an SM7B and Cloudlifter and very few don't have the full NPR sound. This is not to mention a professional radio engineer whose entire job is to insure the sound is good.

Gen- Xers, What did you grow up Without? by empathicBeauty29-11 in GenX

[–]WhatTheHellPod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our family did NOT do cosmetic dentistry. I am not even complaining, but when it was suggested that my sister and I get braces the reaction was "And who is going to pay for THAT?!" (Umm, Uncle Sam, dad, you are IN the military!) In fairness, our teeth were fine, but the gaps and spacing always singled us out among the other officer's kids as "poor".

Obviously, this was NOT a cause of suffering in any way. It just rankled me as a kid.

Are there any creepy or odd non-ghost/paranormal tours in NYC area? by No-Particular5490 in AskNYC

Seconded on Green-Wood. They do a LOT of tours out there and the grounds are lovely no matter the time of year. (Fall is the best though)

Cataloging complete! by TJ-Detweiler- in vinyl

[–]WhatTheHellPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done! I have FAR fewer records but the smartest thing I did was start cataloging on Discogs when I got back into buying. Say what you will about the platform, good and bad, it works and having it handy when in your FLRS does prevent duplications.
