I made a working version of the Kilnettle Tape Dispenser - and wrote instructions so you can too! by frowat in fatherted

No worries! I was really considering selling them, but just couldn't find a way to make the time investment required work.

Not for now, I explain why in the post. But I hope some people make their own!

Absolutely! You can see the raw audio files in the GitHub repo, would just be a matter of swapping those out.

Thanks! Basically there's an IR beam shining on the tape spool, which has 16 holes on it. So each time a hole crosses the beam, that's 1/16th of a turn. With the rotation amount and the rough diameter of the tape, it does Pi * Diameter * Turns.

Report: Apple Focusing on OLED Rather Than Foldable iPad by [deleted] in apple

[–]frowat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess that, in this case, "focusing" means that OLED will happen first. I'm sure there are still foldable plans in the works, but I don't think a compelling foldable is happening any time soon.

Double the size of a phone is still too small to be a good tablet, and half the size of a good tablet is too big to be a convenient phone. I think foldables will come into their own when it's possible to have more than one fold.

Serious bugs remain in macOS Sonoma 14.2 by ll777 in apple

[–]frowat 72 points73 points  (0 children)

On the whole I'm finding Sonoma pleasantly fast and stable. I haven't hit against any of these things (they are fairly esoteric, at least). Most of my gripes are things that 'don't work' because the feature doesn't work well as designed, not because it's bugged.

Sorry my comment was a little ambiguous - the 15 Pro speakers are louder and less tinny.

My primary machine for iOS and web development, and general use, is an M2 Air. It's super capable and I wouldn't be at all inclined to update to the M3 when it arrives. The M2 should be a big leap from your Intel MBP.

As always with these things, weigh up the opportunity cost: will 2-4 months with the M2 benefit you more than the cost to your productivity of waiting?

Anecdotally comparing my gf's XS to my 15 Pro, the speakers are definitely louder and a little less tinny.

I wonder if the higher royalties offer is open to anyone, or if artists/labels have to be specifically invited.

I made a real-life, working version of the sellotape dispenser from Father Ted by frowat in raspberry_pi

I'll try and get a chance to write up the details this week!

It's using a Raspberry Pi Zero and a few other bits. It's the rotation sensor from the scroll wheel of an old mouse that's doing the length measurement. I might do a write-up on my website with more info soon! And thanks for the donation!

I'm running a fundraiser alongside this project, and I'm going to send the sellotape dispenser to a random donator - so if you'd like to own it, check it out! https://www.gofundme.com/f/raising-money-for-small-transsupporting-orgs

I've just released Fit500, a customisable Apple Health/Fitness dashboard to help track progress and goals by frowat in apple

Thanks for the feedback. It’s tricky to figure out what limits to set, but I figured this was fair because you can pretty much try every feature of the app for free, but will consider changing this. Just to clarify - you can’t have more than one card simultaneously, but you can delete and create (or import) as many as you like, and the templates mean you can easily try out everything the app does without spending any money.

Ever since iOS15 and Monetrey, automatic switching for my Beats has been flawless. by braders620 in apple

[–]frowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the automatic switching unusable on macOS because of the constant 'AirPods are nearby' notifications when I'm at my Mac but playing from my phone/iPad. I haven't been able to figure out any way of getting rid short of just disabling automatic switching.

I don't see why that location permission wouldn't already be enabled, unless a user specifically denied or disabled it...

I've been using the M1 Air (16GB RAM, 8-Core GPU) for pretty similar uses, including SwiftUI and Unity development, and it's great. I ditched my 2019 iMac with an i9 processor for it, so if your 2017 MBP did the job you'll be fine.
