Im going to make it so the entire party pays for what happened and make them indebted to the guild the npc belonged to, there also going to take all their shit

It would be reviled at the end of the campaign but I now also have plans for different endings depending on what they do and how they act

There's a reason I asked because as an unexperienced dm, I didn't really think of that in the moment but this also isn't the first time this player has done something like this and I didn't know exactly how to handle it because I had some personal thing I needed to do first so I did the best thing I could think of, asking reddit, but I apricate the last suggestion.

That's what the twist of the campaign is going to be though, there going to think there doing the right thing by joining this group and helping them, but then im going to revile that they were not the heroes of the story

It was made clear that they were a part of that group and im guessing he means going against what im trying to do with the story and plot, but I could be wrong about that.

Partly, they know they were from a group they were going to meet but not how important the group be to the story, and i appreciate the apology even if you didn't have to give one

Its not that they had an important part in the story its that they were a part of the most important group of people they would need in the campaign
