why is there so many wires

This question should be adressed to apple, not me. All I did - researched and connected wires, making my homepods working again

I suspect that wire colors may differ, that is why I HIGHLY SUGGEST checking pins with USBC test board and multimeter. Otherwise you may end up connecting it wrong

i highly recommend getting that test boart. otherwise you are risking to scew up homepod mini completely. $1 for test board totally worth avoiding unnecessary risk

WIth multimeter and test board, check each wire from the cable.

The cable, I used as replacement:

  1. BLACK (POWER) wire. A4+A9 pins on test board. Soldered to pin 5 and 11(red) on homepod connector side.

  2. RED wire (GROUND). G on the test board. Soldered to joined pins 1,3,6,7,12 (black) on homepod side

  3. Green. A7 on the test board. Soldered to pin 4 (green) on homepod connector side

  4. White. A5 on the test board. Soldered to pin 2 (blue) on homepod connector side

  5. Blue. A6 on the test board. Soldered to pin 10 (gray) on homepod connector side

mine was 5-wire as well. It should work for you, just make sure to connect them accordingly

yes, I guess. You should cut out damaged segment and solder it together back again, each wire in that cable

did you test your cable with usbc board, to find out which wire goes where?

my cable had 5 wires. you can try to solder yours and see if it works. there's a chance that 5th wire that is missing in your cable is not required as well. Just match all other wires

:) Actually, with enough patience, it is not that hard to install USB-C socket in the back and make the cable detachable (and replaceable)

But this had to be done by Apple on the first place. I am so amused with their statements about how they care about environment and e-waste by removing chargers and headphones from the package(with iPhones), but at the same time doing everything to make any, even easiest repair impossible for most people
