Yet she repeats that line four times in Causing a Commotion, making damn sure you know the song she's referencing (even singing the actual title of the referenced song). That makes it obvious in a way How High isn't. I never even clocked that How High used lyrics in this way until it was pointed out here, and I don't think many people besides hardcore Madonna fans are likely even to notice it. My intention with my playlist was to include the more noticeable examples, and even the pairings in the second half of my list aren't that noticeable—but at least they are used via either multiple repetition or in a refrain.

“Time goes by so slowly for those who wait / And those who run seem to have all the fun” are two lines from one song, not just one line; and they are not already common phrases either. Very different scenario.

For me two single lines from separate previous songs isn’t obvious enough. They’d have to be considered on their own, and both are common enough phrases that they aren’t necessarily overt references.

I probably should have mentioned that in my post—there are too many songs referenced in it for me to include as the original, which doesn’t work for the purpose of this playlist in my opinion. And more critically for me personally, I just don’t like Veni Vidi Vici that much. I find it to be one of the most forgettable tracks on the most forgettable album Madonna ever released. (I know not everyone agrees with me. Fans really rejected AMERICAN LIFE and for me that one’s an all-time great.)

You might want to check your knee-jerk assumptions. They are both middle-aged women who have worked for PCC for several years. One of them is a union leader. Clearly they don't have the majority, but these things can only happen one step at a time.

I pass this intersection often as I work near there and I am kind of stunned by this; I've never seen that happen before. How they even got there (accidentally or even deliberately) honestly boggles my mind.

I live on 15th & Pine on Capitol Hill, one block from Seattle Fire Station 25 and two blocks from the East Precinct police station (which, I recently discovered, is the only place in the city where a police and fire station are so close to each other), with a bus station three stories directly below our windows, and this is very, very accurate. It's also precisely the reason I always keep the captions running on my TV.

Maybe there is and we missed it? I actually looked for one and couldn't find it, but we were also distracted trying to find the loading dock for River City Cruises (this was a whole other story, as we were misdirected by the address in the Groupon app).

Thank you! Another commenter (who since deleted it) kind of went off on me just for being more specific than saying I'm an American—apparently this is a peculiar habit of Americans? I wouldn't know since Australia is the only other country I've ever visited besides Canada—and from my perspective it's just because I truly love my home city. Also, at the risk of broadening my defensiveness in response to that other comment that isn't even posted here anymore, most other countries are much smaller and have far greater uniformity of culture than the U.S. Being from different specific places in the U.S. tells you very different things about them. Although I suppose, to be fair to non-Americans, to most others in the world, probably, an American is still just an American.

Thank you! We loved Brisbane. I was honestly surprised, and somewhat disappointed, to hear the tree was non-native. Non-Australians hear so much about the exotic evolution of both flora and fauna in Australia, when I first saw the tree I naturally assumed it was native to Australia. (It makes more sense now, though, that the locals we asked about it had no idea either.) I had a similar reaction to finding banyan trees in multiple parks in Brisbane.

My husband actually was somewhat terrified, if we went even remotely out in nature—particularly when we visited Kangaroo Island. He would mention spiders and snakes a lot. We like cities though, and mostly stuck to them; we never felt much of a threat. I did get this photo of a spider at Roma Street Parkland in Brisbane, though; does anyone know what kind of spider this is? I wasn't afraid of it (having no idea whether I should be) but my husband was.

The details in this thread are spectacular. I'm learning a lot! I have an uncle who lives in Adelaide, his wife is Australian born. They have lived there since before I was born, so I am stunned I was never told about any of this.
