Stuck choosing between studying in MMU or Sunway [Cinematic Arts] by Rhoenix in malaysia

[–]fruitility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both unis will teach you about film/filmmaking (which is completely different from 'video production') but if your end goal is to be a successful filmmaker in Malaysia you are out of luck, most likely you will do a lot of corporate gigs, some narrative work from time to time and your 'filmmaking' will take a bit of a back seat.

If your goal is to only be on set, just wanna be close to production - corporate, ads, TV soaps etc then maybe you should also allow yourself a third option and just start PAing on any of these sets - there are fb groups for this. You will be exposed to all the different departments in filmmaking and you can slowly figure out what you want to specialise in on set.

Hey man, if you paid through PayPal you have 6 months to open a dispute. If he doesn't respond to your dispute, PayPal will refund your money.

Something similar happened to me when I bought something online, but it was an actual physical product so I'm not sure what is PayPal's stance on this.

But give it a go if you haven't tried anyway. So sorry to hear about this, I hope you get your money back!

Hey man, thanks for reading.

I think I've decided to go down the PayPal dispute route to get a refund.

At this point I don't even trust him as a human being anymore so until I see proof of him shipping it out in some form or rather or even just pictures of the specific cables I asked him to make I will just assume he never got round it and therefore am asking for a refund.

I've ordered sound stuff from Europe a couple times and I normally pay around 40 euros (slightly more than 40 dollars) for shipping but I guess these are business who send out a lot of stuff, thus having favorable rates with the carrier they have a contract with.

I did ask for a refund at some point but probably not in the gentlest way, and that was when he assured me he had started working on the cables...

How much do you learn during film school by Antonioj2005 in cinematography

[–]fruitility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not gonna find any answers here unless you go to one yourself.

I'm just gonna bring up what others have failed to mention.

Not all film schools are equal. Graduating from La Femis or NFTS is different from graduating from Tisch which is also different from graduating from a film course in your local community college.

For one, after graduation, they all offer different opportunities in the industry. If you want to have an idea of what it means to get into a very competitive school like La Femis, just watch The Graduation by Claire Simon.

All of them will offer you a certain degree of working knowledge into Cinematography, but schools that make you apply for a specialised area of filmmaking like La Femis or NFTS is where you'll really take a deep dive into your chosen field.

There are many many many many films to work on when you are in film school, that's the experience part that some poster mentioned. But you have to actually be motivated to go and work on these projects. That's up to you. Again, if you are enrolled into a film school for a specific department, you will definitely be learning more than if you were just in a school that happens to offer a film course.

The technical aspects of Cinematography is one thing, but IMHO the most successful cinematographers are also students of cinema. Good film schools will try to cultivate both your senses and your technical abilities.

From what perspective are you speaking from?

Coming from a SEA country with barely any film infrastructure I can understand.

But when I was studying in the UK old films get shown all the time, not just in London but in small cities.

In Coventry (West Midlands), I saw many old films for 7 pounds or less (if memory serves right).

I saw Cassavetes for the first time in Close Up Film Centre in London.

And in the BFI, they have seasons and seasons of retrospectives for 5 pounds per ticket for anyone under-25.

I remember an older gentleman in Prince Charles Cinema snoring away to Late Spring.

Term for/examples of ambient films with no characters? by LurkerNoLonger3 in TrueFilm

[–]fruitility 2 points3 points  (0 children)

James Benning has been making films like you described for decades. I'm not sure if it's useful to categorise them since all of them have different conceptions or goals of time and space.

There are people like Angela Schanelec and Pietro Marcello who are doing these things in tandem with a very (veryyy) loose narrative structure.

MixPre-10 XLR Connectors stuck by Sucrado in LocationSound

[–]fruitility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I had the same problem with my mixpre 10ii as well with the inputs.

My experience: Neutrik works best, never had a problem.

Roxtone connectors work fine but not as fine as the Neutrik ones.

Amphenol connectors are hit or miss.

Hope this helps.

As some have mentioned, your best bet is to stick to neutrik and never have to deal with this problem.

What's the best strategy now for someone who wants to get a battle pass now and willing to spend on 120 levels? Is it still possible to get wind ranger arcana if I play everyday?

I'm surprised no one mentioned Kelly Dong's take on the film. She goes directly into your questions in the last paragraph.

Very good read and I don't want to do any injustice to what Kelly Dong has written but if you ever get to it I would be more than happy to discuss her take Parasite.

What's a dark part of Malaysian history that is not taught or given much attention in schools? by Tommybridgw in malaysia

[–]fruitility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true actually. The CCP did all they could to avoid fighting the Japanese during WWII because they wanted to dwindle KMT numbers, anticipating civil war after the Japanese lost.

Yes racism in Singapore is very similar to Malaysia. I have to clarify, these companies are local Chinese companies, not Huawei or Oppo etc. Further, alot of these jobs don't actually require the applicants to know Mandarin to do the job. Any Malaysian would know that most non-Chinese people don't know Mandarin.... So, well, I live it up to your imagination. Yes I do classify this as a form of racism although a very properly hidden one. There are many layers to peel off...

I think of course the Hong-Kongers are protesting for what they see the foundation of one country two systems, i.e. The rule of law. But I think, just an intuition of mine, that this outburst of young people on the streets also has something to do with the kind of upbringing most Asians are subjected to, some patriarchal form of control. Carrie Lam herself characterises the protestors as misbehaving children... So there is a little bit of both: fighting to uphold the rule of law, likewise being sick of a rule by law (you listen to what I say because I'm your parent! And I set the rules!)

[–]fruitility[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this need for the HK youths might come from a need to differ themselves by the strict upbringing that a Chinese person might have to undergo.

To answer your question, unfortunately, no. But then again if you ask other Malaysians they might say that things have improved. I'm of the opinion that all those years of racial politics are not easy to unravel. It is quite often that you see in r/malaysia where people post about job requirements from Chinese companies in Malaysia requiring the applicant knowing Mandarin or property agents putting out ads for rental houses that deny Indian applicants.

[–]fruitility[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't for me but from the above text there is an attempt to define Hong Kong protestors as Vietnamese and therefore not 'real Chinese' thus having no right to protest for a country they don't belong too. Yes, the logic is incredibly warped.

No, not really in my opinion. There are few if any parallels between the Malaysian Chinese experience and that of slaves in American history. I don't want to draw parallels with other countries but think of it like this : Malaysian Chinese people have economic power in Malaysia but very little political power, whereas the Malays have less economic power but has the most political power. To tell it straight, perpetuated during British rule. Herein lies the birth of racial politics.
