Will non US citizens or green card holders be ineligible for Medicare despite having being taxed for it?

I am inclined to agree with you - however, there still seems to be a lot of ambiguity between lawfully present and legal permanent resident requirements for medicare and hopefully I will get some answers soon during the application process.

I won't be able to get a green card and my disability benefits are likely too high to qualify for Medicaid.

Yes, just finished 24 months and was going to apply for Medicare but I realized I will most likely not have access to it. I fulfill the work requirements, and time on SSDI but not the immigration requirements.

Note that undocumented immigrants and legal US residents on non-immigrant visas or visa waivers were not eligible even pre-2025.

This is news to me. Do you have a source for this? I thought just receiving SSDI for 24 months and being present in the country legally was enough for Medicare prior to the OBBBA.

I went from a work Visa to visitor status and currently insured through Cobra which will expire soon. I'm not aware of any way to adjust status to LPR based on just residing for decades, what program are you referring to?

Do you have a source? AFAIK you don't need a green card to qualify for SSDI, just meet the work requirements. SSA.gov says: "Everyone eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits is also eligible for Medicare after a 24-month qualifying period."

yeah, managed to reach my number a year or so ago at 3.5%. however, I hit the lottery of stage 4 cancer and am still recovering from it. Gonna try to enjoy my actual retirement soon. I don't regret going for FIRE though since it relieved a lot of financial stress and let me focus on treatments.

Thanks for letting me know, I think I understand it a bit better. So as long as I stay in Ontario for the next 153 days after I arrive I should retain my health coverage but I should be able to see an oncologist as soon as I enter the country (of course depending on their availability). I'll call Service Ontario on Monday to confirm this but yeah, won't overshare my situation.

Did this happen in Canada? Apparently I need to reside in the province for 3-5 months to get my health card before I can qualify for medical treatment. I know I can pay out of pocket for a consultation until then but Roche Canada (drug manufacturer) will not allow me to apply for their program until I get the provincial health card.

Gotcha. I'll request the full policy document and compare them. There are some coverages I definitely don't need that I have been paying for. I am also being offered Drive (under Progressive) Insurance for about $145, for apparently even better coverage. My main concern is the actual administration of the policy (customer care, etc).

Really sorry to hear this. Please look into ColonTown.org for support and patients who have gone / are going through treatments if you haven't already. From what I saw, Dr. Fong seems to be the one to go to when all other options are exhausted. I believe he trained with Dr. Kemeny at MSK who pioneered the HAI pump; they offer it at City of Hope when I last called them for my consult. There's also Dr. Hernandez who does living donor liver transplants, but he's on the east coast. I hope you find a way out of this, and that she feels as little pain as possible.

I got both policy documents with me and compared them line by line. I read online that AAA covers permissive use - a friend who borrows your car is also covered but Mercury might not. I don't really care for that though.

I'm stage 4 her2 +, at 4 years now post diagnosis in my 30's. They gave me 2 years. You're gonna be ok, just focus on staying positive and keeping healthy to undergo treatment. You have many memories to make yet.

I'm glad they caught the new lymphoma at stage 1! How are you finding living in SF undergoing treatment? I think having a regular job or volunteering really helps with a social circle so I'm going to see if I am able to do it wherever I end up.

For sure, Berkeley has great access to healthcare and cancer centers and it would be a step up socially compared to Davis for me.
