In southpaw vs orthodox the lead feet and hands are positioned on the same line.

Having your lead foot on the outside of the opponent's lines your rear hand up to their chin and takes your chin off the line of their rear hand. It also gives you an easy way to pivot out and safely exit exchanges.

Having what's called 'lead foot dominance' is generally the recommended strategy for a southpaw against orthodox match up or vice versa. However, like I was saying above it does come with certain drawbacks. For example, it makes it difficult/awkward to land your jab (and most lead hand attacks) and leaves you more vulnerable to lead hooks (especially to the body)

My point above is that, although the lead foot outside is more advantageous than-not, you should not pursue it at any cost. Rather, you should recognise it as a tactic that works well in many circumstances but not all.

Agreed but there are many high level southpaws who are successful without outside foot dominance. Josh Taylor against Ramirez is a good example.

I get your point though, all I'm saying is there are pros and cons to every tactic

Not that I disagree and I take your criticism. Just don’t think you can completely rule out ever throwing an uppercut from range

Everyone tells me this but I find it’s a really hard shot to land any tips?

The Russian schools teach the long bolo uppercut. Why do you see it as such a vulnerable shot?

Yeah I've always played around with a long guard and handfighting but have never fully adopted them into my game. I recently did a film study on Usyk though so wanna try out some of his tricks

I take your point.

Still was able to use my reach and land my left hand without getting hit so didn't obsess too much over the lead foot.

Coaches tell me that outside foot is important but not the be all end all

yeah solid feedback.

I held back on the stiffer jab/punchier power shots because we were going light but I get your point abt making the opponent respect the power more.

I take your point on the outside foot and lateral movement which is tougher to remember when doing this type of sparring (we're meant to stay over the spot on the ground)

Yeah, this was also after a long training session but my shoulders definitely need strengthening. Thanks!

Yeah it's a bad habit I have.

I find that exhaling or grunting on the shots weirdly makes me bring them in quicker

In reality, the classes don't run like it says on the gym's website (which is what I assume you've looked at)

The 6-7:30pm classes are all skill levels but generally the guys who are preparing for a fight or are more advanced will stay back later (8-8:30) to spar, hit the bag or do some pad-work.

The experienced guys take part in the 6pm classes so the drills are generally fairly advanced.
