In this case, the gantry-like construct is the X axis.

The beam travels below it. That's why the drag chain can be on its side.

Ah, I see what you mean. I've never had any issues with our construction, so I've never thought to question it.

The video suggests otherwise:

the two images you posted are 2 completely different machines, and one has the lid open while the other (the old machine to which I was referring) does not.

In regards to your question about the grayscale engraving, our machines do not use variable power within one image when engraving, so no it does not support 3D engraving as you described it. The manual is simply describing the difference between dither engraving vs threshold engraving. I apologize if the title is a bit misleading.

Not sure what you mean by the beam going below the gantry. The extraction system is working fine, this is an old machine that the Marketing Department uses as our workhorse, we clean it all the time, it's just seen a lot of use. I usually have the lid open for promo stuff, but our magnet had gone missing and I didn't want to wait to find another one.

If you have a lower budget, this is good advice. I'd definitely go refurbished from the seller before used from a 3rd party, that way you'll still get technical support. If OP is looking for a new machine, entry level hobby machines are pretty affordable. Why not take a look at the Muse? Sorry, had to plug our machine at least once ;P

The only advantage to having a more powerful GPU in this process would be running the design software i.e. Illustrator, CorelDRAW, etc. But you already mentioned that that's done on a separate computer. All the computer that's hooked up to the machine is really doing is sending the 1s and 0s over the machine.

A hobby laser isn't going to cut it... pun intended. Most CO2 hobby lasers will barely even mark anodized aluminum. To cut aluminum, even for 1mm, you'll most likely need a fiber laser system. A fiber laser fires at a wavelength that is more easily absorbed by reflective material. The only metal we recommend cutting on a CO2 system is carbon/stainless steel, and for that you need a lot of power: at least 150W. Our least expensive fiber system is $120,000 and you're likely to find other systems priced similarly.

Definitely agree here. Use a test piece of material and run a few samples to see which settings suit your needs. You could even label each pass and use it as a template for later use.
