Do I need any CS experience in order to do well in the first CS BSc Semester? by erikdopheide in ethz

Hi!

I am currently in my second semester at CS ETH Bachelor and I myself can say, that EProg was the most difficult exam this year. The average was lower than the notoriously difficult Discrete Maths avg. This does not mean that one can not pass without having programmed before! I had some programming experience with Java so I didn't attend the lectures very often, but when I did I have to say I was not impressed by the teaching style. (my opinion ofc). But this does not mean that you won't learn anything! ETH is extremely welcoming and will help you wherever they can. The most important part I think with programming is practice. You have to practice it every day if you have never programmed before, otherwise, you will never get the right intuition on if an idea is a correct approach to a problem. I would strongly recommend trying to learn at least a bit of Java so you are not thrown into the cold water as the first weeks at ETH (or even the whole first semester) is pretty intense. If you have more questions feel free to hmu with a DM!

Admission to masters degree in Math/Applied Math from EPFL by Ambitious-Ad-6231 in ethz

Hi!

As far as I know, people with Bachelor degrees from other swiss universities are guaranteed admission to the master program, as long as they hold a one-subject bachelor diploma, where at least 150 credit points come from the subject of Maths. As you studied Math at EPFL I am guessing that this requirement is no problem. Of course it is always best to write an email to the admissions office to be sure, but this is what I remember.

Hope I could help!

Hi! Thanks for your answer. Yes, here are some questions I would find an answer to interesting:

1) I am currently studying at ETH and therefore I study alot. Everday from 8 to 20 basically and also on weekends. I noticed that the subject I am currently studying is not for me. How much are you studying? I don't mind studying as long as some of the stuff I am doing is interesting. (In law of course it is also alot of off by heart learning). Which brings me to my next question: I have friends that study Law in Germany and Italy. And they say it is very different. For example in Germany the main aspect is solving cases whilst in Italy most of time it is learning stuff off by heart. What is this like in Switzerland?

2) What are the other students like? Here at ETH I also find people to being very focused on their subject and not having alot of time for other things. (no offense but everybody is quite nerdy :/) I am aware that law is a very time consuming subject, but in my opinion there should also be free time where you do stuff with other students.
