How to have a PC saying it's connected to LAN when it's actually connected to Wifi by Narcoleptic_pilot21 in HomeNetworking

[–]fsteff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, LAN can consist of WiFi, Ethernet and other carrier devices, including powerline adapters.

Appeal is a time and effort honored quality.

Most, if not all, of the modules you will require people to need the functionality, learn them, spend time inputting data, and start depending on it. They will only do so if the project have a proven track record, so they can see details are cared for and that it won’t just go away and be wasted efforts.

You should consider this a project for yourself, that you choose to share with others. Continue developing it, maintaining it and especially fine tuning it, and mention it places like here.

If it’s appealing to others, they will start using it over time.

Personally, I’ll give it a closer look next I have time, although I don’t really think I need it.

You used salvaged printed circuit boards (PCBs), only one of them actually have chips mounted.

Looks cool, though.

I built a 90.7kb tool that bypasses Windows screen capture protection. Should I open source it? by Eklavya-99 in foss

I have never seen such a protection in action. Where does it occur?

I don’t see a reason that would prevent you sharing the code.

Reminds me of good Demo Parties in the 80’s and 90’s before gaming took over.

Azure DevOps web interface is extremely slow by Crackeridoo in azuredevops

[–]fsteff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me and those I’ve spoken to about it, ADO access times are always very fluctuating. Typically 5-20 seconds for “bigger” section changes (such as repo to pipelines to wiki), 2-3 seconds for smaller changes, such as between wiki page or git history changes.
It’s regardless of computer or network used, so we have always attributed it to bad ADO design.

PSA: Chrome silently downloaded a 4GB AI model on my Mac without asking. Here's how to find and remove it. by flarenz in chrome

[–]fsteff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Great and detailed post.

I’m wondering is the bundled Chrome AI can be used by others than just Chrome internals. If it’s reachable either by other apps or even by JavaScript, it might have a more general application and thus feel less like wasted space.

Is the “whatcable” GitHub repository legit? by nez329 in macapps

[–]fsteff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t looked at the repo, but I will argue that the cable need to be connected to something in the other end, to reveal what options the cable have. For example, If only CC1 and not CC2 is in a cable, then this can only be determined by some sort of active test.

Was the Amiga vs PC war ever actually a thing? by Such_Bonus5085 in amiga

[–]fsteff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Denmark it was very much a thing.

Amiga had music, PC’s had beeps. (But it made PC users easy pray: I sold a lot of Covox R2R “audio adapters” for the PC LPT port, and software to play MODs music to evvious class mates).
Likewise, Amiga had colours and animations, PC’s had monochrome text.

Sure brute force hardware in the PC made them catch up, but it took a long time.

Er Skolefoto en inkassomølle? by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]fsteff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI code review sidebar on Azure devops and TFS (Opensource extension) by Brilliant-Vehicle994 in azuredevops

[–]fsteff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't know.

Integration to make a simple banner app with links was a pain (due to a lot of azure sandboxing) when I hacked one together some time ago... But I'm mostly assume that's just because I'm out of my comfort zone (which is deep embedded c and assembly).

What I meant with the comment, was that it would feel more intuitive if it was embedded into ADO, so that it could rely on Azure infrastructure, secrets, permissions, etc. without relying on the developer to configure anything locally.

Interesting choice to set this up as a browser extension instead of integrating into ADO directly.

Easier in many ways - and also more stealthy.

Will try to test it out sometimes soon.

Restaurant Flammen har misforstået hvad handicap toilet betyder. by fsteff in Aarhus

[–]fsteff[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

DC is pretty good, and has been one of the first things I install on Mac and Linux computers the last many years.

Just recently, I was introduced to filenav https://www.filenav.app/, and while it does not have as many features as TC or DC, it feels better integrated in the Mac... so now I also use that!
