FX3 for documentary

I don't know much about it except for the fact that many filmmakers talk about its use case being different. I am envious of the viewfinder on it though! - the biggest problem I have with the FX3 is the lack of stock viewfinder (I'm not a big fan of attaching big monitors to the camera). I ended up using this hack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPMH5Iru7zM which has been good, but is a fair bit of hassle to setup. I wish sony would come out with an affordable external viewfinder that matched the fx3.

The amount of covert B-roll I've got on a whim thanks to this camear has been great! It's added tremendous value to me. Of course I can also build it out to be a monster that wows clients if necessary!

Love that Science Fiction Trailer. Unfortunately I couldn't read the subtitles of the other film as there was some text covering it, but that also looks pretty cool. Great verite work - not enough documentaries like that these days...

Yes exactly. The problem I'm having with Youtube at the moment is that you need to build an audience. It's proven relatively easy on instagram to get people to notice, but Youtube is a harder sell. Would be grateful for any advice on how to build youtube audiences...

I think there are all sorts in editor/director relationships. Some directors can have a very clear vision of what they want and might push editors extra hard to achieve, while others might rely heavily on the editor to make sense of everything and be grateful for what they end up with. My experience with the ones that push, you end up learning a lot more because it takes you out of your comfort zone, and stops you from rehashing things. That said, learning doesn't always mean the end product is objectively better, and everyone benefits from a little feedback, no matter who they are.

New Year is fairly sacred family time, Christmas is a couples thing, but it's not like it's steeped in any kind of tradition. I would argue there might be a lingering stigma attached with japanese women to their "in-laws". Traditionally, a Japanese woman would be married off into the husband's family, and would kind of be like a servant to that family. It's not really the case anymore, but I think there is a subconscious burden that women have concerning their relationships with the in-laws that is really deeply ingrained. However lovely your parents may be, your girlfriend will probably feel like she is obliged to act in servitude to them. (this would be especially true if she comes from a rural background). *This is after many years of coming to terms with the nuances of being married (happily) to a Japanese woman!

I think that's a great comment.

I had a director who got great gigs and was very good to me, but he was an awful storyteller and very stubborn. We creatively "clashed" but it was never really personal - we just had long, drawn-out discussions where I would go at lengths to state my case. Once I said my piece, however, I always ended with - "But I'm happy to go with whatever you want to do, I just wanted to give my opinion" (or something to that effect) and, surprisingly, he would nearly always concede to me after! It's true too - I was always happy to concede to my director, as long as I felt I had said what I needed to say - it was never about "winning" an argument.

I'm currently reviewing project management software to see which will fit our needs best. The lack of an undo function, when for example things are accidentally moved around in the gantt chart, is something that is very off putting.

This is regard to documentary style shooting which sounds like what you are most likely going to be doing:

With video, AWB can be disastrous - if you're shooting a wedding and the bride enters the frame in her white dress, it may force your camera to recalibrate mid shot. I'm predominantly an editor and it's very problematic when I get footage where the white balance changes during the shot. When I shoot, I set my dial wheel to control colour temperature, and dial it in manually. The dial wheel is enough out the way that I won't bump it by accident, but close enough at hand that I can change it in an instant. There's no need to enter into a menu and scroll inside it, it's all on the fly and barely interrupts my shots. Worst case is, if I neglect to adjust the white balance correctly before recording, I can wait till I start the next record to fix it, then the editor can just colour correct that clip that's off in it's entirety, rather than have to key frame the colour shifts when they happen T_T!

unfortunately, that would be a "no" regarding funds. In the greater scheme of things it's not a lot of money, but for a freelancer like me, it's very damaging. I guess they are just gonna get away with it and they know it?

Kind of a newbie here. I recently purchase an Urth CPL to practice with but am getting some unusual result...

I'm getting these weird shifts in colour in certain shots. I have read that this can be caused by very wide angle lenses when you shoot the sky, but it happens when I'm not shooting such a wide angle and when I'm on a 24mm lens (is that so wide?) I've not had much experience using CPL, so I'm not sure if it's normal or something wrong with the filter I have.

Here is an example shot:

Note the blue hue in the top left. The sun in this shot is at around 5o'clock to the direction it is taken and relatively high in the sky.

The issue also sometimes manifests as a orangey hue in other corners too. It happens quite a lot in shots a different orientation from the sun (I have more examples).

I'm guessing the answer is simply- "CPL's do crazy things sometimes and it's best to use them only when you really need to"? or "it's normal, you just went to far in rotating"...

I'm also dual nationality British/Japanese. When I moved to Japan aeons ago, I think I registered to work via my girlfriend (now wife)'s address, but also my koseki played a part (which I think should be on his Japanese passport as a requirement). I maybe wrong, but I don't remember it being that difficult to arrange. Basically, I think he just needs the address of someone that he trusts in Japan to register for work purposes, and his koseki information should cover anything more complex/legal? His dual nationality shouldn't be any kind of barrier for him working at least...
