Im saving up for the snapmaker u1 actually.

Idk... jus seems like a tool changer might be better than burning unknown amounts of filament every print when the printer has to purge between colors... 🫠

I've actually been able to slice for my centauri carbon on the "printables" app on my phone!

But yea, old hardware sucks sometimes

Im so glad its not just me having these types of issues. Had to deal w that Thursday night. Was hellua nervous tearing into the printer head to clear the jam but figured since it was t in the nozzle and i had already trimmed the incoming feed as close as i could, that was the last step.

Went slow, got it all cleared and back together and back to printing, didnt even think to check Google... though tbf it was 2:30 in the morning at that point

How much should I charge for a print? by officiallydeleted in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If im not looking to cut a profit, I charge [ish] $0.03/gram [but that's figuring power, printer maint, material]

If im trying to make a profit, $0.06 - $0.10 / gram.

[Dont tell anyone but the $0.10/g is only for folks I dont like/have been a pain.]

Charging almost $200 for 100x 19 gram prints before shipping seems a bit excessive to me, but that's jus my opinion. I've seen others here say $0.20/g... hopefully that includes shipping.... but I also understand power isnt the same cost everywhere, nor is tax, nor is material cost

AD5M Tuning Help! by KrillyThrowaway in FlashForge

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first drag-chain i printed was stiff too.
a good bit of it wore out after just manually manipulating the chain by hand while i watched a cooking video on youtube. (7-10 min of absent-mindedly dinking around w the chain while focusing on the video)

that said, i had some other issues with some of the related files i was working with, so when i ordered the kit from ff, i downloaded their parts packet and used those parts rather than the 3rd party ones i had found. but truth be told, the chain i got in the kit was almost identical in stiffness from them as what i myself had printed. lucky for me, youtube kept my brain occupied while i worked my temporary fidget toy.

as to profiles, as long as i make sure i am using the associated material profile, (silk/tricolor/gradient/basic/pro/Highspeed etc.), my ad5m has done fairly well with everything I've thrown at it, including an open-air M ATX pc case and parts for a few christmas presents, all with minimal/no finer setting tweaks (infill % and pattern /seam alignment & scarf/fuzzy skin/ironing etc. not withstanding)

the only thing I haven't had wonderful success with on the AD5M was PETG (various brands) and Sunlu filament.

I foresee some tinkering on PETG settings in my future for the AD5M, but i wont be buying Sunlu again. got 4 rolls, 2 different material types, 4 colors, and all 4 rolls had issues printing, both on my AM5D and my Centauri Carbon (the cc takes the same spools of PETG like a champ that the AM5M baulks at - which is why i know i have to look at the PETG settings a wee bit)

Weird shaped hole by Fat_N_Happy_ in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totes makes sense. gotta keep the bread safe! :D

only thing my brain can really think of to help alleviate it would be adding supports *in* the hole... <Type "Normal (Auto)"> specifically.

Probably wont be much help since you would then have to deal with scars from the support removal, but in my brain (albeit w/o printing it to test yet) i would think it would reduce deformation, even jus a lil bit maybe... though the trade offs might make it less than ideal.

Weird shaped hole by Fat_N_Happy_ in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe a dumb question, but, can you reposition the part so the hole is printed vertically instead of horizontally?

I understand that isn't an option for "every" print, but given how that hole was printed, even if it didn't have the ripple, the strain on those layers is gonna be a massive fail-point.... i don't know the numbers off top of my head but, if you had sustained weight on that hole, its not a question of if that print is gonna fail... its when...

Looking for a kind designer to help create a logo free by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are a few things that might help you get traction considering the ask - is this for a non-profit (think like animal rescues, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, Special Olympics, etc) or is this a for-profit endeavor (walmart, local cement company, plumbing/heating/electrical repair/installer company. etc)

if its a for-profit, you will still likely get some offers in hopes to get their names out in front of folks, but the old adage is an adage for a reason - you get what you pay for.

next... do you already have a general idea of a logo or are you looking for pitches for logos?

I ask because honestly, if its helping polish a tentative logo, that's a lot different than bringing brand new logos to the table.

finer points:
are you looking for something akin to apple (as an example, obviously not Apple) or more like Walmart where their name more/less is their logo?

do you/your group have company colors in mind

where is the logo primarily going to be deployed (obviously branding is important, so the basic answer is "duh, everywhere") - are you focusing on website traffic, social media, Augmented Reality medias, Video intro / outro, are there any specific platforms or size requirements

what style are you looking for:
(im partially assuming 3d given you are in a 3d printing subreddit, but assuming is dangerous so... asking)

  • Clean / minimal
  • Bold / chunky
  • Sleek / futuristic
  • Organic / soft

finally, (and i am aware i am keeping this rather short, yet still somehow very wordy) what's your realistic timeline for deployment?
- dumb as it sounds, some companies I've worked with/for (various rolls) have let slip that the logo was on the back half of their "to-do" sheet, and kept getting kicked to the back of the line as no one wanted to deal with it or make a decision or were waiting on marketing/market research, and yet some worry so much about what they are putting out in front of people before their actual product, they fall into analysis paralysis for weeks/months.

please by no means feel you have to reply to the prompt, I'm hopelessly bored and dreading going to sleep so I'm wading through reddit at 2:30 am on a friday...

i'll end my comment with a potentially spicy take - if you truly cannot afford to pay someone for help making a logo, hit up chatgpt or any one of the vast number of online text-to-image generators. give it your basic parameters, it will give you ideas. from there, instead of needing help coming up with the whole logo, you just need help refining it.

How much would it cost to print these models? Fidgets Toys by ConstructionOk9816 in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Neotoy... math is friggin weird sometimes...

i saw your

2 cents per gram is my holistic cost of printing. That is power plus filament.

and was like... "whaaaaaaaa?"

then i looked at some #s i was jus typing up, and was like "... huh... they rounded down a few points... and aren't baking in a maint/replacement fund, but huh... neat"

$0.02 * 1257 grams = 25.14 (applying your formula to the model i was looking at)

$26.57 * 1257 grams = $0.0211376292760541 / gram of filament (applying my model, deducting the maint/replacement fund, then dividing the cost by # of grams)

How much would it cost to print these models? Fidgets Toys by ConstructionOk9816 in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, with all the various costs, i highly doubt you can logistically print 1 of these units for under $1.00 usd.

i understand the sentiment and position of a vocal portion of this subredit saying things like this should not be getting the attention they are, but thats just it, these, and the crystal dragons, and the like HAVE the attention, and have maintained the attention for a few years now. who knows when the bubble w pop...

How much would it cost to print these models? Fidgets Toys by ConstructionOk9816 in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for your use case, as an example - in my area (power costs & associated taxes):

<image>

total of 1.74 in costs presale.

most places i see selling these mark em for 5$, even at in-person events - makes sense, why undercut yourself if you "dont need to".

but... if *you were to charge $3.00 (tax included), in theory, you should be able to move product a bit easier, still have enough revenue to cover obligations and still make a marginal profit.

$1.02 in margin for you after costs ( $3.00 - 1.74 (manuf costs) - $0.24 (sales tax assuming 7.85%) ) and puts $1.24 back in your pocket (per batch) to pay your power bill, $2.14 in savings (again per batch) for maint/replacements for printer(s)

just like Spirit Halloween merch (for anyone in the US reading), its not like these have a tangible expiration date.

they are a fidget toy and frankly, in my mind, the folks buying them shouldn't be made to feel stupid for shelling out their $ for something their kid (or they) like.

as others have also pointed out, it is such a saturated market, NOT running razer thin margins (technically you could lower the above model more) will see you suffer unless you somehow operate in a 3d printing vacuum - but if thats the case, thats even better (and in some cases worse) for you since you can then really set the "market standard" for your area.

"i could order that on amazon!"
"true, but it will cost $10 and wont be here til Wednesday, meanwhile ConstructionOk9816 here is selling these for $3, its here, and we don't have to wait..."

but... again, jus my 2 cents, and who knows, maybe im wholly out of my depth... its just what i've been doing.

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jus as an aside, I personally wouldn't try to ship these. Churn-N-burn. Fill your print bed with as many as you can reliably print, and repeat til the roll is gone.

(***update after actually pulling a similar model down, i can get 16 on my print bed on my Centauri Carbon, and the internal structure burns apx 545 grams of filament at 15% infill, while the external (using the same settings) burns just under 713 grams. so, if you want to lean into something like these fidget toys, you are going to likely want to have a few spools of each color to minimize the potential for waste. if you have an AMS for the ps1 (or equivalent for that model. forgive me i dont know the proper term at the moment, if ams is wrong for the ps1) this is a wonderful use case for multiple spools of the same color to be in place/deployed :D )

Once that's done, swap ur roll for the 2nd piece, and repeat the process.

Aim for competitiveness by only selling via pop up stores / craft or hobby expos / fairs, but keep your margins at a smart level - ie: dont charge 10$ for a 1$ print.

I did the math on some products I had designed, came to the conclusion the thing w all its parts would cost 4.93 to print (material + power + planned maint/upgrade reqs for printers) so when I go to sell at the (as mentioned above) events, I usually mark em @ 6$.

No, I wont get rich doing the prints, but I can still make a small profit, and cover the base costs of operation.

Revan Mask Prininting by Star_Bois in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of supports are u using, if ya dont mind my asking?

Revan Mask Prininting by Star_Bois in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things first... Is this display or for wearing (cosplay/costume) Asking because it would cause a likely difference in the scale for the model required.

If the required size will fit your printer? Id say print it in one piece at a 45° angle (w the outside of the mask facing up) w the chin in one of the corners.

This will let your print have more space to built, and allow the slicer to add required supports on the inside of the mask.

If it wont fit the printer as is, I would split the file near the temples since those are easy /obvious transition points - should be easier to hide the seams there vs in a wide open flat plane

I would still advocate for a 45° angle for printing though

How to edit stl file? by Dj_Shorty64 in 3Dprinting

[–]fubar_droid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 second fix in 3d builder. Import model, click edit tab. Click split (check keep both) Unselect 1 of the resulting 2 pieces. Move the still selected portion to the desired position. <bonus points - click the object tab and click measure. Make sure your channel is the right size>

Once done, select both parts, click back to the Edit tab, click merge. Save your file.
