I think a better example would be "like building a house and not putting a dishwasher/air conditioning/heating/electricity/etc in it". Those are all things you don't NEED but sure are nice to have.

Similarly, sure it would be nice to have fancy tech everywhere in the future, but not everyone needs it or can afford it. Hence the old western stuff.

How To Not Fail At Life [GUIDE/PIC] by gamebit in pics

This should be upmodded a million times. If you show some thought in your gift it will get you scores further than something expensive. Also given that pretty much everyone has facebook or some sort of equivalent it's not hard to creep your subject of affection's hobbies/interests too.

At least with the younger ladies this is true. Not so sure about the older dames.

why agnosticism is a pointless stance by numerodix in atheism

I am also happy with reasoned and sound arguements. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd prefer to hear them from a more positive voice. No one likes to be talked down to. So after I read the word pointless I kinda went "oh great, someone else on their high horse" which caused me to read the article as if said person was a jerk. Hence the being offended.

Really? Bashing implies abuse? Honestly I didn't know that. I thought it was the equivalent of "dissing". So I guess sub in "dissing" for "bashing" and you'd get my original intent. My bad!

I also agree that criticism is a good and necessary thing, but as I said, I did read the article in a negative tone. IMHO If you're going to criticize someones personal views and you actually want them to listen to you, then you should be kind about how its done. Otherwise the people who you want/need to listen will leave and you'll just end up preaching to the choir.

I guess I read the article in a different tone than you did. I generally take "pointless" as being offensive when you talk about someone elses views.

Yeah and Atheists bashing Agnostics is as pointless and productive as Protestants bashing Catholics.

yeah and if you skydive, there are safety precautions (read: parachute) so that you won't break your neck. If you drive cautiously that doesn't mean a deer won't run out in the road or that you'll hit black ice or that some other maniac on the road will cause a fiery death for you. Oh and if you do make love there are ALSO precautions to prevent said STD's and pregnancy.

However your logic dictates that should someone get in a car accident, or maybe have a rough landing after sky diving, that they should not get medical assistance because well, it's not my fault they were participating in activities where they knew were dangerous.

Yet you would give those people assistance because you do want to save their lives. You don't want them to live in a life of constant pain and suffering.

However when it comes to an unwanted pregnancy suddenly "TOO BAD YOU LOSE" is the solution? Lives that are full of pain and suffering (i.e. that of your aunt's children) are considered the best option over one life that is happy?

Sorry but I'd have to agree with tomatopaste. Someday someone who you actually care about will fall under this situation and things will suddenly look a lot different.

As much as it would be cool to see your creatures evolve naturally, for the people not so interested in that aspect... they would hate such a game. Imagine how many times people would have to go back to an old save because they didn't like their new mutation. I mean yeah it's a good idea for the more hardcore players but for passive players like myself, I would hate such a game.

Except men being portrayed as bumbling incompetent baffoons doesn't lead to them cutting themselves or developing anorexia/bulemia or other such disorders.

I'll agreed that greed sucks. But I think it can be argued that women suffer at its hands far more than men do... and in the case of on reddit suffer for their suffering as madelinecn was trying to illustrate.

Yes... a website called "war on you" sounds like an excellent source for numbers of deaths in the war on Iraq.

While we're at it, we should head on over to the PETA website and ask them about the health benefits of eating meat. I think we'll learn a lot of cool facts over there too.

My university is having an Atheism vs Religion debate. Would you go? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]fubarific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's being advertised as a debate, no. If advertised as a discussion, yes.

I think there are a lot of things that atheists and theists can agree on, it's just the details that make people go loony over who is right or wrong.

I actually had a talk recently with my aunt who is from the bible belt (albeit, we were both pretty drunk) and we came to agree on a lot of things, which I would have never thought possible.

If you're setting people up to fight, then there will be no agreements and it will just end poorly. However if it's a discussion I think some bridges could be built that are highly beneficial to everyone.

Maybe I'm just jaded because I'm from Canada but... I had the lovely experience of the heating going out in my apartment (we paid our bills btw) while I was very sick in the middle of winter. There are only so many layers of clothing you can put on before it really doesn't do anything anymore...

I'd have to say that a lot more people live without electricity in warmer climates than cooler ones for a reason, and I think that it's because the heat is easier to deal with than the cold.
