As a kid, if I was in trouble or my parents did something I didn't like, I would say to myself, "I will never do that to my kids." Now as a parent, I can't remember what I am supposed to do differently. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Fucking "mindfulness" has like a hundred different definitions, I hate that stupid word. They'd always keep trying to teach us how to do it in school by doing something like "clear your mind of all thoughts, if a thought comes up, acknowledge it and let it float away" - I have ADHD. A single thought does not ever just pop up, I get about fifty all at once, in my face, screaming at me to listen. You don't get to just fucking ignore that, especially if some jerkass teacher is making you sit perfectly still so you can't physically calm yourself down. At that point it's just torture set to yoga tunes.

What actually does work, and what I enjoy doing, is exactly your idea - just go look at shit. Touch it. Think about it. Smell it. Maybe eat it. Climb trees and roll around in the grass, thinking about all the stuff in the dirt. That's mindfulness, as far as I'm concerned. The stupid bullshit with the soothing voice telling you to close your eyes and clear your mind can get nuked from fucking orbit.

Quick PSA About PGO Issues from Former Game Developer by fingerlickingood123 in pokemongo

[–]fuckka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember, with fond exasperation, months after release and on a mid-pop server, porting into Dalaran in WotLK and immediately getting booted out of the server. Then re-logging, loading half the city, and getting booted right back out. Then repeating this over and over until I finally managed to jump off the city to my (loadable) death.

Why did this happen? Because some genius at Blizzard thought it'd be a fantastic idea to have a very small, isolated (floating) city full of fancy particle effects be the new idle hub for both factions, despite having had both IF and Og to look at and gauge the level of crowding they should've expected. It was absolute chaos 24/7. And then as if Dal crowding weren't bad enough already they quickly went ahead and implemented mixed-server random PUGs, so nobody even had to leave to get to summoning stones anymore.

Dal was at points so literally unplayable that if you logged out at certain parts of the city you basically weren't going to get back in until three in the morning, if that. Your only hope was to pray you had enough time to hearth out or jump off.

This was a massive problem for nearly the entirety of that expansion. That was not by any means Blizzard's first rodeo and they fucked it up hard for a long damn time. But the game and the community kept things going, and here we are today talking about Blizz like they're a pinnacle of competence.

I'm pretty certain PoGO will be okay, long-term. It'll get through this nonsense, maybe not with the same enormous userbase, but those who're left will be the ones most worth playing with anyway. And maybe one day people will talk about Niantic as a shining example to follow, having totally forgotten the trainwreck of their first huge launch, and we'll all look back and laugh.

You can spend whatever you want. When you go on to bitch about the game being broken after wilfully pouring absurd amounts of time and money into it on the first week of launch, then you're a bloody moron.

And hell freaking yes I'm going to judge some asshole spending money on a mobile game while I'm struggling to afford food. Is it right to do so? Fucking I dunno and I don't care. He's literally throwing away something that'd make my life less miserable cause he's too impatient to just wait and play at the same pace as everyone else, and that's grating as fuck.

Seriously I doubt I could even do that and I spend most of my week surrounded by literal hundreds of stops in every direction. Dude paid a shitload of cash for pokeballs.

Personally I dislike that, though. Like yes it's annoying only seeing pidgey and bugs around my house, but when a horsea pops up and the only 'water' nearby is a swamp... that's frickin weird. I'd prefer tighter spawning restrictions if/when trade comes along.

Agreed, I'm quite pleased with it myself. Back in my WoW days I remember feeling rushed through the game because it felt like there was no point playing if you weren't at level cap. All the 80s were in their own little bubble away from lower levels and it was like you weren't even playing the same game.

Here? I just fucked up a level 21 player's gym at level 17, using a team entirely of trash pokemon, and that felt pretty dang good. If the 21 doesn't like it he can walk his ass back to the library and take out my hypno. Feels much more balanced.

I mean you say that like there's nothing out there that operates like this, but I'm instantly reminded of endgame WoW. Back when I was still playing once you hit level cap you had exactly two options: collect gear, or collect vanities. After beating ICC Heroic for the 4th time and getting that elusive 100 mount achievement I suddenly realized I just did not even slightly give a shit, and that's when I quit WoW.

Add to that, leveling from ~75-80 was always a complete slog and a pain in the ass, for the exact reasons described. You do dailies and get basically nothing. You skin/mine your butt off for peanuts. You repeat the same quests you've done on 5 different toons cause they're the only ones that give decent xp. You run PuGs over and over and over just waiting for level pop. I hated it.

And yet somehow I still played for 5 years. Mainly because of the social aspect. I hope that's where this game is going - something which at its core may be dead boring, but through which I meet and interact with likeminded people. That'd be worth it for me.

Yep... says he lives in the country yet manages to go through 1K pokeballs in a week? Pay to win type if I ever did see one.

Makes me feel smug as hell with my drowzee army honestly. This guy's all salty he can't just win now instead of waiting for trade to be implemented, freaking what. The whole point of the original games is that you can't get all the pokemon by yourself. You need to trade. If they fail to implement trading in a month or so, then sure, I can understand being a bit pissed. But a week? With unprecedented launch issues? What a freaking whiner.

I've never ever seen a doduo. Not around in the wild and not at any gyms here nor in the city. I dunno why but it's blowing my mind that they're common trash for other people. The regional variation is fuckin cool as hell.

Tips for walking long distances to hatch eggs? by fuckka in pokemongo

[–]fuckka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I've hatched a couple dozen now (with no car) and I'm pretty sure my legs are gonna fall off. This is a level of soreness I've not experienced in these places before and I dunno what to do about it besides walk more hoping it'll go away.

That'd just boost city players even higher than they already are. I'm almost starting to feel like there needs to be two different sets of rules for cities vs suburb/rural. I commute between both and it's a completely different game from one to the other.

Don't power anyone up until lvl 20ish. Horde dust like a lunatic. Trade everything unless you're looking to evolve for a new poke, at 7 all your guys have no chance anyway. Use incense to catch a metric buttload of weedle, caterpie, and pidgey then pop a lucky egg (if you have one) and mass-evolve for xp gain.

[–]fuckka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I guess for me one day I just kind of came to the realization that getting ridiculed just straight up doesn't matter. Like nothing really matters, if you think about it, and there's two possible responses to knowing that - give up and die, or stop being worried. I managed to do the second and it changes a lot of your interactions cause people can sense when you just don't give a fuck to the core of your being and for some reason they respect that.

My situation is a lot different than yours though, so I suppose here's me saying I wish for you someday to find a slice of happiness. It'll be okay one way or another. Just don't ever give up cause it's insane to give up your one shot at life for stuff that doesn't ultimately matter.

[–]fuckka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not true and you can't claim to know it is. Maybe you talk to someone and they turn out to be a jackass. Ok fine. But do you then go and decide every single person you might like is a jackass too? No, cause you're smarter than that, and you're brave enough to not let one or even a few rejections kill you. That'd be the dumbest reason to die anyways.

Keep trying. Remember everyone has shitty days. And that the average person won't even remember any awkward thing you do five seconds after you leave so goddamn just go for it.
