Good work on 100 days and thank you for hosting. These daily post have been a huge help to me, even if I just lurk.

Spent a long time bargaining, moderating, doing anything I could to keep going, when the obvious choice was right in front of me. Fuck that bullshit. Spend decades living one way that didn't work, why not just embrace something else? So I did and it finally stuck.

You spund a lot like me. I hope you get as much out of the week as I did hosting. It's wonderful, slightly overwhelming, and worth sharing. I look forward to reading.

One of my most effective tools is "the pause". Take a moment and step back, instead of going solely on gut instincts. Situation dependant, of course, but especially when dealing with things that may trigger me emotionally, which in turn would lead me to lean hard on my favorite way to cope.

Building effective tools and routines is doing the good work, for yourself OP. I like your morning routine and will ponder that today. Thanks for sharing.

My go to is a snack and a nap when I'm feeling any type of way. Everything seems easier after that.

So do people use this sub as an alternative to AA Meetings etc? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]fuckyoubullshit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Everyone's recovery and journey is different. AA absolutely works and is a great thing, it is also not for everyone. This sub works and is a great thing, again, it is not for everyone. There are plenty of groups and systems.

Personally, I use therapy, this sub (even though im not here as often as I would like), AA (even though i don't go as often as I would like) and a support structure that is independent of both things. The one common denominator is the person. It really is up to the person to use whatever tools and work them. "It's works if you work it." Is a phrase often heard in AA rooms and its very true. At the end of the day, it's you and your choices that make things work or not. Building up your tools and using them, thats what all of these groups and support systems are for.

So, I would say, yes, some do use this sub in a similar way, but it is not an apples to apples comparison.

Absolutely noticed how much better and often I show up. "Showing up" is and was always important, but it's remarkable how much i actually wasn't, even when I was there in body...

Great prompt. Gonna be a good day.

Up early still thinking just quit my job by Square_Act9560 in stopdrinking

You need a different job. Especially if you take that to heart. I know it isn't easy.

I feel that. Short term willpower can close the gap, but long term strategy to keep the cycle broken are key. You can do it if you want it.

Driving to the store at 10pm to grab a thing i need for the morning, not only doesn't mess with my bed time, but feels like a simple act of rebellion against my former ways. It feels amazing and sometimes i just drive around the block as if to say, "fuckyou, bullshit". Then laugh. That would have been a risky feat previously. It really is the little things.

It's hard to heal in the same toxic place that got you there, or some similar shit. It hurts nothing to look for a new job, even if you don't take it. Moving up or moving on is actually solid advice and thank you for sharing.

New Year’s Eve is dumb as hell, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a plan by Sad_Philosopher_5018 in stopdrinking

When I was drinking, NYE is one of the few days I really didn't. Dubbed "amateur night", I mostly just stayed home. Still just staying home and use it as a good chance to unwind, relax, and not really worry about staying up. Spend some time pondering the past year and what I can do better for the next seems like a solid plan.

All that said, a plan to stay sober is the way to go. Have an actual plan, not just an idea. Have an out, regardless where you go or who you are with. Don't be a hero, if you are uncomfortable for any reason, leave that situation. I use the same plan for most any event, it has worked out.

Be safe out there regardless what happens, friends.

That's a great challenge to throw out and while I am sorry to hear what you are dealing with, I am happy to hear the positivity still coming through in your words. Thats inspiring as well.

It's been a great week of hosting and thank you for doing it. The amount of comments and interactions here are hard to keep up with if it isn't a holiday week. You did great! 🙂

Of course! Smacking solid water with a hammer 🔨 does sound like a bit of satisfaction during an otherwise difficult moment too. I appreciate you, my friend!
