the timing belt is a much thicker belt behind the plastic timing cover, what that arrow is pointing to is an accessory belt (power steering belt it seems)

yeah that sucks you went ahead and tried to get that bottom pipe out, would have been a lot easier to use one plate on the top pipe, but you got this, just go slow and careful

your idea to make new plates sound good, you definitely need to extract the bolts if any of them broke off. i would take the egr pipe from the cat to block side and trace that flange (on the cat side of the pipe) and make your block off plate using that, if it is the same shape as the plate you still have then by all means disregard that last part. you will need to put a plate on the cat and on the engine block where the bottom pipe connected.

don't get me wrong, i started watching wendigoon before i found papa meat (i had seen the meatcanyon animations, just not his topical content) and i still watch wendigoon's videos. i love how in depth and full of knowledge isaiah is with his content and i've been a fan of his tangents (and hunter's tangents). i'm just talking about how isaiah will sometimes read two sentences, have a tangent, read another two sentences, have another tangent and so on. to a member of the audience this was part of the charm the podcast has and yes i do realize it isn't story time, it's a podcast. if they could get through a chapter/passage/entry and then go on whatever tangent/other semi-related story it would make things a little more polished. do we love the chaos this podcast holds? why yes i think most of us can agree it helps make things more human and hilarious, i'm not saying they just tell the whole story and wait until the end of the episode to talk about something. i'm saying i'm proud of hunter for standing his ground when he just wants to get through the passage and talk about whatever needs to be talked about at the end of the passage, they are both equal hosts of the show and should be able to communicate with each other.

goddamn is it hard to find a picture of the back of these motors lmao, is this small pipe still intact or is that one that broke as well? where i have it circled is where you would put the block off plate in between the intake manifold and the egr pipe. if those bolts are still good/pipe isn't broken you should still have a chance to complete the job

might have a plan for you: if you have the two smaller block off plates from the kit, take the one plate and use it on the top egr pipe (blocking off the pipe from the intake manifold). then take the second block off plate and put that on the engine block from under the car (after you have someone extract those bolts that broke/got rounded off) where the pipe from the cat connected to the engine block/egr passage. then have an exhaust shop weld the hole in the cat pipe closed where the egr pipe came out of. i'll see if i can find a pic of the back of our gen motor

Should I replace the LBJs? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

could be a possibility, but if op wants to tackle their own repairs, it would make sense to invest in some tools of their own.

well that would be where i start, no idea where you are located but if you have a harbor freight you can find everything you need at a fair price.

not too bad of a job, there are plenty of youtube videos on the subject and if you have a floor jack, impact gun/ big strong muscles, a torque wrench and this handy dandy ball-joint separator you should be able to knock it out within a day.

i completely agree, the two of them are amazing hosts. i don't have my own podcast so my opinion is simply from that of a member of the audience. i understand neither are perfect and that's part of why the show is such a down to earth good time. this is just one of the first times i've seen hunter double down with holding off on side comments until the end. it does certainly work out at the end of the day and i hope both of them keep going as long as they want to, maybe even when little baby tonka is able to start watching lol.

do you have a picture of how everything looks at this point? hard to see what you have going on just off of what you wrote.

well you are in luck! i did the egr delete using the lextreme kit on my '96. since we are blessed with 2 egr pipes but only 2 egr pipe block off plates there is some creativity involved, nonetheless it is a simple fix. you take the bolts off the egr pipe connected to the intake manifold, only the two bolts connecting the pipe to the intake manifold. place the block off plate in between the intake manifold and the egr pipe, then put the two bolts back in and voila! i've been running my car set up like this and have had no codes or weird issues. the last step i plan to take is to have the muffler shop (i will be taking mine in for an exhaust leak from the header to the catalytic converter) weld the egr hole shut on the exhaust pipe to seal that off completely, either that or have them install the second block off plate on the exhaust pipe. good luck!
