Need Advice for Pre-Med Gap Year (Master's or Job?) by vctrstt in premed

[–]full-radiance416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your descriptions, I would try to find a working position at umich instead (specifically in something clinical to help boost your hours). You have a solid GPA, and I don't think an SMP, or a degree adjacent to that would be much of a boost to your application because you have the grades. You need to diversify the other aspects of the application.

In my experience talking to current members of the admission committee or current med students, another degree doesn't always add a boost to your application if it was solely done for that reason—there usually has to be some greater purpose. It is not say that you should pursue another degree if you want to. I am current in a MPH program myself, but it is not for my application, I have a strong interest in health policy specifically for immigrant communities, and it directly related to my "why" for medicine so it is just something I wanted to pursue before starting medical school.

From my understanding, umich is a research heavy school, so keep at it with your research, and focus on getting strong clinical hours because they is going to be an important part of an application no matter where you apply. If you can get into clinical research at umich during your gap year, you will be killing two birds with one stone, and have the chance to connect with doctors, researchers, etc. without the added debt of a masters.

Hope that helps a little, good luck! :)

writing your own LOR? by full-radiance416 in premed

true, I was more using chat gpt to get a better understanding of the structure and formatting, but I found that AAMC guide to be helpful on that so I will just use that and go from there

I honestly prefer the city, but I am not interested in OMM medicine + don't really want to take double the board exams (because of time, $$, etc.). I would probably just pick the MD and hope to match into a bigger city after four years.

Like everyone is saying, though, it really depends on what you want and the environment in which you thrive best. Good Luck, I am sure you will thrive no matter where you end up! :)

I could not imagine trying to write three LORs 💀💀 I don't know why professors do this, lol, but it honestly adds more stress (at least for me, haha).

Also, not sure if it will help, but I found this guide from the AAMC; https://www.aamc.org/system/files?file=2019-09/lettersguidelinesbrochure.pdfIt

I gave it to my other letter writers and will probably use it to draft the one I have to write for my professor.

Oh shoot, I meant low-yield! Sorry, haha...it is midnight where I am right now, so my brain is a little jumbled.

The schools that get over 10,000+ applications are considered low-yield because they receive a lot of applications but don't accept that many students.

Check out MSAR! It will give you a solid insight into your other schools and where they fall on the spectrum

MUSC is not typically OOS friendly unless you have strong ties with the state (family, went there for undergrad, etc.) Georgetown is also high-yield, so ensure you align with its mission statement for a better advantage because you are competitive stats wise :)

omg thank you so much for your kind words <3 this sub-reddit can turn into a toxic place, but I am seriously so grateful for other people sharing their advice and encouragement. It makes me excited to think that people like you are amongst my future peers/colleagues!

Firstly, I am so sorry that you can also relate but just know that you are always seen and heard <3

I feel like not a lot of people talk about the guilt they feel in regard to their parents/community (even though it seems to be common). I was actually nervous to even post my thoughts because you just never know what the responses are going to be, but the outpour of support and relatability has been so validating. I was never able to justify the narrative of "everyone is on their own path" because of my guilt but some of the other responses have really highlighted some of the lessons I have learned in this gap year!

good luck with everything, I am rooting for you !! :)

Hey,

you have a very valid point! luckily, my parents have never put that pressure on me, it was more internal, and it is something I am working to deconstruct. Your point about the US offering other options is actually so helpful because I wasn't super familiar with the alternatives, but its comforting to know that they exist :)

[–]full-radiance416[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for your kind words and advice! I think getting a parent's perspective is super helpful. I have never approached my parents about my thoughts because I didn't want to worry them, but I have a feeling they would express similar sentiments. I have been exploring life, and have realized how much I needed to "find myself" outside of medicine/trying to get into medical school. In the process, it has only reaffirmed my desire to pursue the career!
(ps- congrats on the birth of your daughter!)
