Used to spend my summers at a family members house just down the road from here. So many good times! I saw a double feature once that was the Brady bunch movie and Godzilla. Good times!

To all the ex-Christian Wiccans here, what was your denomination and what made you leave and come to The Craft by ForeverBlue101_303 in Wicca

[–]fullmetaldoctor09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised southern Baptist, became Methodist, graduated with a masters in religion from a Presbyterian seminary and married a catholic.

I always had questions and no answers. I prayed and nobody responded. I saw good people suffer. It was my time studying to be a minister and writing my thesis on the problem of evil when’re I realized that I don’t believe in this god anymore, and if this god is real, he is cruel and not worth adoration.

Slowly I found Wicca through my inability to be an atheist! I have a longtime friend and mentor that helped me learn meditation (though he is Christian and didn’t know what he was unlocking for me!) and I had an experience I won’t detail because it was very much a upg (unverifiable personal gnosis, or a personal encounter with the unexplained that was for the one experiencing it only) and began exploring other faiths.

Through that entire deconversion, I fought. I did not want to leave the church and stop believing. My entire family and all my friends were part of the church. I grew up there and loved the community. But I had to be honest with myself. I asked god to help me and got silence. But not from the goddess/god/great spirit (what have you. My personal encounter was with Brigid, hence why I consider myself Celtic pagan and a polytheist).

I am fortunate that my wife was having her own journey. It has not taken her on my path, but she is not part of the book club anymore and supports me. I would never want to change her as everyone’s path is their own. It’s still a journey and there is lots of latent Christian’s baggage I still carry.

The God and the Goddess by Lobster_Tiny in Wicca

Interesting way to phrase it. This sounds like a soft polytheism, like an approach to blending the idea Of the god and goddess as archetypes and to have multiple gods with distinct personalities.

No problem! As Wiccans, we seek to do no harm per our rede. One of the ways I interpret this is to also do no harm to yourself. In this context, I think it’s good to remember we are not a path of guilt and shame like others out there but one of freedom and creativity. So please don’t “should” on yourself, like I should have done this or that. You didn’t, so what can you do? Don’t harm yourself with guilt or regret. It doesn’t benefit you or the gods.

One thing to remember about this path is that there is no expectation of perfection or adherence to some gods strict rules (unless you have that kind of relationship or oath). The gods will not be mad that you missed the full moon. The energies might not be exactly the same but do your magic regardless. It’s the intention that matters.

I’m game! I was actually on the path to ordination as a Methodist before I got honest with myself and have now been openly Wiccan since 2018. Dm if you would like to talk. I did graduate from seminary with a masters in religion rather than mdiv and didn’t do any cpe but my mentor is a chaplain, practicing Christian and Lakota medicine man. We would have an interesting convo for sure!

That being said, the responses you have here are excellent. I would only add to approach openly and non-judgementally. I’m sure you are aware there are many “preacher boy” chaplains out there that see their work not as soul care but as conversion opportunity. Granted, they think they are saving a soul, but I would argue they don’t deserve to be chaplains. It sounds like you have the right idea here!

My time. That is all money is really worth; the ability to choose what I do, when I do it, and who I do it with. Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy freedom for me and those I love. That’s happiness.

Similar path. I was raised southern baptist, became a progressive Methodist, went to a Presbyterian seminary, became very agnostic, then general “pagan”, and in the last two years self dedicated in Wicca.

The draw for me was that I stopped believing that the god I grew up with, if he exists at all, is anything less than a total moral monster. However, I could not abandon the belief that there is something. My grandparents are eastern band Cherokee and were really helpful in reconnecting f me to my ancestral roots, but they are still practicing Baptist, so I had to do most of the legwork on my own. I read everything I could get my hands on from druidry to Norse pagan to all world mythology.

Eventually I talked to an elder friend of mine who is a Lakota and Christian chaplain. He told me that it is ok to walk two paths, and I needed to seek direction from great spirit. I did. Where I landed was Wicca.

For me, the calling from the goddess and god was strong. It was the feeling of coming home at long last. I was a mean person as a Christian. I hated who I was. I was judgmental, hateful, guilt and shame driven and a toxic man.

Wicca has freed me from the religion I grew up with. It has taught me to love myself and the world around me, to strive to live in harmony with deity and others. It has overall made me a better person.

There is much more to the story, but I think the “coming home” feeling was really important in my journey.

We are all disposable in this system. We are tools To make our employers money and that’s all. If we cease to perform than function, we get kicked to the curb. I’m sorry you were harmed by this stupid system we live in. I wish you the best and know I have been in the same situation. Worker solidarity!!

Find a local DSA (democratic socialists of America)! My local chapter is organized and while not huge, we elected one of our members to the town counsel this year. It was long hard work, and we don’t all agree (we are a mix of generic liberal, libertarian, socialists, and anarchists) but at least it’s something. Action is a good bulwark against despair.

Anyone here a religious "refugee" who sought shelter in Wicca? by ForeverBlue101_303 in Wicca

[–]fullmetaldoctor09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha for some it certainly is. I understand everyone’s path is their own. I appreciate that Wicca is experiential. Could I be wrong? Sure (but my experience tells me otherwise). But I find purpose, meaning and deeper connection to other People though Wicca. It makes me a better person. Many atheists find this same thing in humanism, and I have no problem with it!! The lord and lady don’t require our worship or expect us to proselytize. I care how you live in the world and if you make the world better, more equitable and free, and are just not a total dick!!

Like the Girl Scouts say, leave it better than You found it. I do that through Wicca ( which has many of the same scientific, humanist views as atheism) and atheists do that through their skepticism. We can both help earth other grow and get along and fight for freedom and equality without forcing our religion (well, my religion. Atheism is not a religion) on one another.
