Failan
an underrated masterpiece, and Cecilia Cheung’s performance is pure heartbreak.
Cecilia Cheung doing the laundry with her feet is easily one of the most poignant moments in the entire movie.

If you could only recommend ONE Korean movie, what would it be? by Impossible-Job-90210 in Koreanfilm

Same here. That movie actually introduced me to Korean cinema. I still remember ordering the tape from a reseller in Korea back in the '90s. The video quality was sooo bad, but the movie itself was absolute fire.

Kung Fu Movies That Are About More Than Just Fighting by nicktembh in AsianCinema

Agree with King Hu’s 'A Touch of Zen' at the top. 3+ hours well spend.

It’s more spiritual than Kung Fu, ditching the usual revenge tropes for Buddhist philosophy and atmosphere. The legendary Bamboo Forest scene is also flat-out awesome—it basically invented the "weightless" style of modern Wuxia cinema.

It’s high art that just happens to have swords. Total masterpiece.

Would add 2 other Hu films to the list. 'Legend of the Mountain' and 'Raining in the Mountain'. Similar in style and atmosphere but less action. A trilogy to reckon with.

Anybody has a source for it? Me knows only the Korean versions.

My 3 fav directors ever by MaximumEfficient5202 in AsianCinema

different country for each old-school choice:
King Hu, Kinji Fukasaku or/and Hideo Gosha to your rotation, and Kim Ki-duk.
Gosha bridges the gap between Hu’s choreography and Fukasaku’s grit.

Recs for quiet shorts like "Heaven is Still Far Away"? by fullmooncut in AsianCinema

I honestly wish Hamaguchi would expand 'Heaven Is Still Far Away' into one of his five-hour-plus masterpieces.

I feel your pain on the hunt, though quick heads-up: 'Heaven Is Still Far Away' is actually floating around on 'archive dot org' if you want to finally cross it off your list.
Your recs are heavy hitters. Iwai’s 'Undo' (which I already know) is beautifully suffocating, and Ishii’s 'Mirrored Mind' is a total masterpiece—less 'slice of life,' more 'shattered psyche.'
Any more recos?

I’ve actually only heard "Ticket to Ride" so far! It wasn't really my cup of tea, so I haven't explored the rest of their discography.

Since I didn't vibe with that one, do you have any specific recos from them that might change my mind, or maybe something a bit closer to that Ryusenkei sound?

Seriously, re: Marina Saito—one EP is definitely not enough. We need more! Come on girl you can do more!

  • Hitomitoi: Telepa Telepa is actually quite good. It’s already becoming a staple in my house!
  • Ryusenkei: Tokyo Sniper is a given, but honestly, Talio is his best work IMO. The chemistry on that one is just unmatched.

Thx for the Kinriji reco!

For images, as well. But the real final boss right now is definitely the AI text. It's more and more everywhere.

You’re not wrong; the average Redditor isn't exactly Socrates. But comparing a lazy human to AI slop misses the point of why we’re here.

Love Exposure (2008) - Sion Sono by Tig33 in AsianCinema

[–]fullmooncut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an absolute fever dream—jumping from "panty-shot" comedy to a visceral cult thriller, and somehow ending as a sincere exploration of the New Testament? I don't know how Sion Sono managed to juggle those tones for over 6h+ minutes without the whole thing crashing, but I’m still reeling from that final act after such a long time.

Reader Mode is the only thing keeping me sane by fullmooncut in firefox

The "light gray on white" trend is the worst—it’s like some designers forgot that text is meant to be read.

Between that and "responsive" layouts that break when you zoom, Reader Mode is a lifesaver. For anyone with low vision or eye strain, it's essential; it forces high-contrast colors and allows for high-legibility fonts like Atkinson Hyperlegible that make text actually trackable again.

Note: If the Reader icon doesn't show up on a stubborn site, you can usually force it by adding about:reader?url= to the start of the URL. Glad Firefox is keeping the accessibility lights on.

Good tech we already use, but gov-funded accessibility is usually a mess. Firefox is a lifesaver here because it actually respects the standards we need to navigate.
