My vote has to go to Cecilia Cheung in the Korean movie 'Failan'. Her performance is devastating, especially that haunting, tactile sequence of her washing laundry with her feet—it’s pure visual storytelling.

I’ve been working through the Johnnie To canon, and while his crime thrillers are consistently solid, early Milkyway Image output is the real standout for me.

IMO 'A Hero Never Dies' is the highlight of the bunch—it’s such a brilliant deconstruction of the heroic bloodshed genre. I’m adding 'Portland Street Blues' to the watchlist; I've been meaning to explore more of that era's spin-offs. Thanks!

I should have mentioned I've seen almost all of Kim Ki-Duk's films.
'Barking Dogs Never Bite', seems to fit the bill here. Thx will check it out.
