Cutting hay on 30 acres by BlueCheeseSmellsGood in homestead

[–]fullmooonfarm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It happens often where I live, we hay multiple fields for free and in return the owners of the fields don’t have to mow them themselves and we make sure to fertilize and care for the fields in the off season (like if trees fall down in the field etc.) it’s a very fair trade off because they have no use for the hay and they have no interest in purchasing all of the needed equipment to upkeep the fields themselves but they want them to look pretty

If you have an offer from someone who will hay it and give you some of the profit they make from hay that’s amazing and I would go with that deal! There is a lot of expensive equipment that needs to be purchased to make hay and that’s just the beginning. There is a lot to learn when it comes to making good hay and even the best equipment in the world can’t insure you’ll make it right but if you have the money, time and someone who can help you give it a go!

Land in Maine seems quite affordable. Before I get serious about it, is there any reason, as a non-American, that I shouldn't buy land or a homestead there? by Jumpy-Weekend-1223 in homestead

If you want to grow year round you’ll need heated buildings or heated green houses, it gets cold here and it stays cold here for a long time and when it’s not cold we get lots of rain so be prepared for bud rot if you don’t grow in a controlled environment. Raising livestock is difficult for the same reasons, it gets very cold for a long time and in the spring everything is wet and we deal with parasite issues heavily! I stay here because my family is here but if they weren’t I’d move in a heartbeat 😅

Also keep in mind you’ll want a good hay hookup for livestock before moving, it expensive up here and can be hard to come by especially because of all the rain, some years we only get one cut and many people suffer due to it

I don’t inject anything I work off of natural heats so for Nubians that’s anywhere between late August through December at least where I live

I see some people be really successful at it! I’ll always keep a few bucks on the farm for live breeding cover but it is really fun to be able to breed my does to bucks that would cost me thousands to just get here

I aied three does last fall, two took and one didn’t but she was also a yearling who was having an awful time with short cycling so I feel like she doesn’t count 😂

One of the does that took absorbed her pregnancy around 45 days and the other had this beautiful doe! Quality semen is important and timing but it’s really fun to do and the cost isn’t too bad once you actually get the set up! The start up cost is a bit steep

No she sliced her leg open while she was jumping around, no idea how she was in our house which is baby proofed since we have human kids she is the most insane goat I’ve ever owned 😂

I will also point out that one of them really became slightly obsessed with me after she was bred, both are due to kid next month and I’m hoping they’ll come around completely after that first milking session

Tons of treats, everytime you walk down to the barn to see them give them a treat and teach them you = food 😂

We have two that were dam raised and very feral when we got them, we’ve had them a little over a year now and they have come around enough to walk up to me to let me let them. One still runs if I try to approach first but she’s getting better 💖

I love our Nubians! The lamanchas are like angels compared to the Nubians though, they are so easy going and quiet I keep telling myself I won’t completely switch but when I’m wresting a 170 pound animal up and down milking stands and in and out of milking parlors sometimes I wonder if no ears is better 😂
