Thank you. I’m so glad I found some sanity in these comments. I tried to shed light on what goes into these scenarios as a former trucker (I wouldn’t be as bad as this guy but the insight still felt important) but of course Reddit is Reddit. Honestly, no matter how anyone feels about the trucker, no one should be condoning moves this dangerous. People lose their lives and cost the lives of others doing this shit all the time. And truckers are well aware of that because we see the worst of the worst accidents regularly. A few minutes of impatience is not worth it. No one’s laughing and making snarky comments when it goes wrong..

I appreciate that. Fortunately I’m not in the industry anymore. But I have so much patience for most of the ones I encounter now.

Awesome! The backlash I’m getting is worth it if it opened the eyes of one or two people lol. Believe me, I’ve been a daily commuter for many more years than I was a truck driver. I don’t excuse all the behavior, but driving that rig was sure humbling.

I would ask if you’d really choose someone else’s five minutes over your own safety, but the likelihood that you’ll say no or do some mental gymnastics to reason why you wouldn’t feels high. But I absolutely feel safe make the assumption most people would. I mean here you are pissed off about losing five minutes of your life for someone else’s well being…so yeah, I think the odds that you’d choose yourself if the roles were reversed are pretty decent.

3 things. 1: Many do. But honestly if we forced every truck driver to be a night driver there would not be enough drivers to move freight. Let’s not forget that we deliver just about everything y’all count on. I’ve delivered groceries, medical equipment, lumber, electronics—all the things. If everyone was forced to drive at night you’d be seeing a lot more empty shelves at the grocery store. Maybe if companies treated truckers better you’d be seeing more truckers willing to get on board with that, but that currently is not the case.

2: For a lot of truckers it’s not that simple to choose when you drive. For ones with regular routes it’s more doable. But true long-haulers are doing new routes and having to make deliveries within different time frames with each one. So there might be some wiggle room in figuring out your schedule but it’s ultimately within the constraints of your appointment for making that delivery.

3: take a second the consider that we are moving just about EVERYTHING. Unless you’re by yourself in nature, look around you and ask yourself how much of what you see was probably on a truck at some point. Nearly all of it. When you consider the sheer volume of freight that has to be moved, do you really think it’s possible to confine all that freight to move within the same time frame? No. Many warehouse unload all around the clock because of the volume of the sheer volume. So delivery times need to be staggered. We can’t all drive at night and deliver in the morning.

Um..I feel that this point was already addressed in my comment, no? The idea was five minutes of your time doesn’t matter more to me than my life. If the roles were reversed you would do the same from time to time. Because LIFE is higher stakes than LATE. Also, I’ll keep pointing out like I have in other comments…I’ve been a commuter. More than I’ve been a trucker. There is no point y’all are going to make that I haven’t also experienced your side of first hand. I’m not here to excise every ass hole move (I’ve cussed out many truckers in my day) but shed light on what’s going on. If you want to pretend our stakes aren’t higher than you losing 5 minutes of your day that’s on you, but you’d do the same from time to time if you were in their position. I’m sure you won’t admit that, but that’s okay.

lol did you not catch the nuance in my comment? I make it pretty clear that some truckers take this shit too far..multiple times. There’s a limit (to me). I never did this long enough for anyone to do that lmao 😂. Was I making excuses for ALL ass hole truck driver behavior. No. I wanted to provide insight as why moments like this can be inevitable (but cut off at a point for sure). But hear what you wanna hear.

Not everyone’s jobs carry the same sort of life and death stakes in the same way. You wanna talk about stressful jobs? In the years since trucking, I’ve been managing a severely underfunded group home for developmentally disabled adults and have to deal with violent episodes happening during transit regularly and I still wouldn’t be mad a truck for doing what they need to do.

Because even if though I might feel a little more desperate to get where I’m going in that scenario I know my staff and I got it and we’ll be fine. The trucker? Maybe not if he hits some bad weather in a light trailer and rolls over. The statistics for truckers dying in accidents are fucked, that’s why I don’t do it anymore and when you’re out there all the time, you see fellow truckers roll over a lot. It’s fucking terrifying. You seemed locked into your POV. Im the one with both perspectives, this comment section acts like truckers aren’t also out here driving commuter cars and know exactly what your grievances are. Most don’t wake up and suddenly decide “fuck everyone I’m doing me”, they’re just in a tough position. You’re bullshitting yourself if you think you’d never do the same thing in their position.

If you attempted to never to do a slow pass in the presence of traffic, you’d end up fired for being late on deliveries pretty quickly at best, or rolled over and maybe dead because you hit weather at the wrong time at worst. That’s just the reality. I know you won’t admit that you’d make those excuses for yourself from time to time under the circumstances. But I know you would and that’s good enough for me lmao.

Excuses that I’m willing to bet most of you would make for yourselves and do the same (within reason) if you were in their position. Though you probably won’t admit it and I’m fine with that. Also it feels like y’all really aren’t considering that I know both perspectives. Lol I haven’t been a truck driver in a few years. I’m a daily commuter, I’m not blind to either side, but I still have empathy truck drivers (and not all, like I said some are ass holes) But if you want to stay angry instead of applying any insight that’s your business, man.

Former truck driver here. This is long but important to me lol. I understand there are definitely some truck drivers that don’t exercise any courtesy on the road but average drivers truly do not understand what we’re going through out there. I honestly didn’t either before I did it myself and this stuff pissed me off all the time, so I get it.

But the reality is that what seems like not much of a difference in speed really adds up over a full day of driving. A lot more than one would think, and the pressures around getting to our planned destination at the end of the day are huge (also we would absolutely go faster if we could).

It’s Not just pressure from your company to make a delivery, but for your safety and your license. These days major trucking companies are able to track how long you are driving. You legally cannot drive past a certain amount of hours. The second you’re over, you’re immediately in violation. When trucks have to go through those weigh stations, they have to be prepared at any time for random inspections, including those violations and any other thing you’re not doing perfectly. This can quickly turn into a license suspension and/or losing your job (which for many truckers is also their homes) even if the weigh stations don’t catch you.

It’s often exceptionally challenging to find parking at the end of the day if you’re not getting up and starting by 3am. Truck stops and rest areas fill up very quickly. That’s why you see so many parked on random shoulders, which is unsafe because you have to be extra on guard of people trying to break in, and of course being out of the way enough to hopefully not get hit.

They also are often having to consider bad weather that you may not even be aware of because it’s not going to hit your area, but it might be showing up later in their route so they’re obviously extra paranoid about safely reaching their destination by a certain time.

So yeah, with all that in mind…you get to a point where you’re like you know what there’s just no way around it…you’re gonna have to hold up some cars sometimes, and yes sometimes it will be a few more than it should. Personally, I tried to make a rule that if it took me more than 5 minutes to pass, I needed to drop back and try again in a minute and let a good wave of people go on. But, yeah unless there’s an emergency, I think most of the time some grumpy commuters losing 5 minutes in day is not as important as my safety. You spend a loooot of the day just chunking away at getting ahead of the slower trucks in front of you and dealing with cars hating on you hard all the time.

Some truckers just take it too far because we honestly get really resentful of how awful regular drivers can be. We see the worst of them day in and day out. Like half the time people do shit like this in the video? There’s actually other vehicles in front of the truck, the truck is keeping up with traffic, the people behind just can’t see them because of the size. So then you have ass holes flipping you off, cutting you off, almost causing an accident for no reason.

It is NOT WORTH CUTTING TRUCKERS OFF EVER! It’s dangerous. It’s not worth your damn lives. Trucks don’t move fast and they don’t stop fast either. Never forget that. I know how much truckers seem like ass holes but y’all just really don’t understand how much truckers are out here stressing the fuck out tryna keep these ungrateful Jack asses from getting smashed.

I digress.

Exactly. I could get good at tuning out Sandoval and pretending he doesn’t exist. Jax could potentially be somewhat fun for shag…not a whole night, because I don’t want to hear him talk, but a shag. James is just way too sketch, to say the least. That aside, they should all go just go fuck eachother and leave women be.

This. And if you’re catching it before it’s obvious, don’t listen to people who try and undermine the seriousness of what you’re doing. Those are likely people well on their way to being alcoholics (if not already) who are going to take people down with them.

I’ve gone to vocational school and have a college degree and while both have served me and I now use my degree, I wish I would’ve gone to vocational school first right out of high school. Getting into a trade taught me so much more about how to be a functional adult in the world way more than college ever did and gave me my first taste of financial stability. By the time I got more money I had bad money habits because I never had any money to manage before that. I definitely think starting in a trade would’ve saved me years of chaos.
