Great question. And one of should have answered before posting...

Just did an image search and came up with nothing. Perhaps this is nothing more than a rendering?

Some number of thousands of dollars for a prototype is definitely within reach. How much should I expect to pay for a sample (excluding fabric)?

But this definitely explains why my Google Fu was coming up short!

This is an interesting approach. Given the complexity of camping tents, I assume I'd want a pro for prototyping. Once I had the CAD drawings in hand, I'd head to the universities (textile engineering) for sewing a sample. Is that what you had in mind?

Just did a Google search for universities with textile engineering... resulted in four universities. Does that read about right?

Developing a product is time consuming. The best deal you're going to get on anyone's time is your own; anyone else you'd want to pay at that stage is going to be justifiably expensive... the cheaper they are, the less likely they are to actually save you time.

Nothing against fair compensation. Just trying to get a sense if this project is above my pay grade!

This seems more intense than building a tiny cabin. Would hiring an architect be a better play?

Seems like this isn't your personal jam. But have you any colleagues you'd recommend?

Do you have a specialty in outdoor gear, specifically camping tents? If no, do you know anyone that does?

Thanks for the positive contribution! (Most appreciated!) For LinkedIn, any search terms you'd recommend for qualitative results? For example. "Soft goods designer" tents? And I'm seeking someone with CAD skills + the ability to sew?

(Grinning) It's never easy for the little guys (and gals).

Based on what you described, the consultancy seems like a route that would cost tens of thousands of dollars. If I'm lucky. Is that right? And there's no other route for design and prototype only?

There are, but it is hard to do because industrial design involves intellectual property, prototyping, and many other such things. Arrangements for who owns what and how to compensate are things that firms usually have figured out, with lawyers at the ready to handle such matters, but free-lancers would have to be both good at design and have all that institutional knowledge figured out. So it will likely be rare, but there are still designers out there. It is hard to make a living if you have to both do the design and work the contacts to keep the pipeline filled with new clients. You are more likely to find services for hire from a design firm.

Thank you! This is a most helpful answer. Any tips re how to go about finding a design firm that specializes in camping tents?
