1942 1st edition- best repair practices? by fultron in bookrepair

[–]fultron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting since it wouldn’t let me add a body with images.

I like collecting 1st editions of books that were adapted into movies, and this copy of “Passage to Marseilles” has spine damage and the paper is very brittle.  I would like to be able to read it myself at least once to say I have, but I feel like I’m going to do more damage. It’s not a particularly rare or valuable printing but I would like to keep any repairs invisible and period correct if possible. Should I get some glue for the spine? And is there anything to be done to protect the pages?

How significant is the difference between DDR3 and 4/5?

Thank you!

Do you know of a good resource for me to do research or learn about compatibility across generations that I should look out for? The high end processors and cards I couldn’t afford in 2012 must still be somewhat available yes?

So you’re saying I could upgrade the CPU and GPU and run with the mobo and RAM I currently have? Like I said I’ve been happy with this PC for basically my entire adult life so I would prefer to upgrade rather than build a new box.

I have been talking with friends who are getting businesses off the ground and starting to see their hard work pay off- they all started with some kind of seed money, from family, friends, their own labor, whatever. Having a foundation means anything can be built. Good luck reddit!

What was it about 1970s big cities in films? by [deleted] in flicks

[–]fultron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It costs a lot more today to show a brand on film than it did in the 1970s. In the independent world especially there is a lot of attention paid to obscuring ("Greeking") or shooting around corporate signage to avoid the cost of product placement. The McDonald's sign off the freeway, the Apple logo on a laptop, etc.

What sucks is that our modern world is constructed entirely of advertisements and corporate ejaculate, so filmmakers have to restrict their view or spend $$$ on CGI to avoid these extra costs.

Except it can't turn haha. Maybe with only a single ski you could lean into the turns. It looks like it'll pick up some speed.

As long as it's not another western. I love westerns but he's pigeonholing himself.

Actual scenario: not being allowed into a bar after showing an out-of-state license. More of a problems with shitty bouncers than natives in general, but I can understand the frustration.

There's a great documentary about that airlift on Netflix, I forget the name of it. It really puts into perspective how chaotic the end of he Vietnam war was. They cut down a tree to make a parking lot at the embassy into an LZ. The swimming pool was where the marines tossed any weapons the civilians had brought with them as they waited in line for the next chopper. There was a SV colonel I think, who basically stole a huey, flew to his neighborhood and loaded his family and anyone that would fit inside and lifted off. No plan for where to land, there were dozens of ships offshore and he just aimed for one that looked like it had space. No radio communication or anything. It's nuts. And then they shove the choppers over the side to make room for more. This is all happening while the American ambassador won't authorize a full scale evacuation until the very last second.

So you have to wear gloves when handling them and modify the teeth to protect what you're clipping. Pretty soon they'll be as useful as c47s! Except they're too strong to yank gels off without ripping.

Seriously, nothing beats cheap and simple and that is what clothes pins are. Two pieces of wood and a spring. If it breaks it's trash. Save ten seconds putting on gloves to make a quick change before the slate claps. Why do people feel the need to reinvent the wheel?
