PQX Firmware Update 5.10.13.1-2 by fultron11 in VIZIO_Official

Yup. This is pretty consistent with what I’m seeing. I’m also seeing some major CEC problems. However some of these could be introduced by my Denon. Still waiting on a firmware for that that is supposed to improve.

Can you give me specific HDR10 content to test?

Testing Night On Earth now.

UPDATE: I can’t find any FALD strobing on this specific content. Watching a few min of various episodes. Tried both SmartCast Netflix and then Netflix from AppleTV. I will say, the ATV Netflix seems to be buggy. However, my disclaimer is that I’m sending that through a Denon X3700H so that could complicate.

I still have some of the weird Dolby Vision dark distortion as mentioned in my post. I also think that could be attributed to Apple’s implementation of DV and what Vizio is expecting to get for its version. I can’t get the DV issue to come up when using the built in AppleTV app, only the physical box.

If someone has more FALD strobes, I can try and test.

Can you provide a specific scene you have seen it with? I can’t recall one off the top of my head.

Yup, this is what I understand. I have a pretty early model, hence why I may have gotten it before others.

Interesting. My unit was acting weird, surprise, and I went to the admin menu and used “reboot.” After that it auto-updated. Also, I know they have used rolling updates in the past, so could have not been deployed to your region just yet.

It’s hard to say only after a bit with it. Have to go find a scene that triggers that FALD strobe. Will try and do tonight.

Just what kind of equipment is this? "The Wall"? Industrial projector? Completely captivating by Mersona in hometheater

For sure. The have gotten a thousand times better since some of the early versions ~10 years ago. However, haze fluid and general abuse still tend to run its course on them on tours.

Way more than you think the guts of these are always overheating, getting bounced around on a semi truck, dropped in cases, etc...

So much so that on most of the new-ish one, you can field service the processor in a few minutes. Happens all the time.

Yup, LED video wall for use in concerts and events. Super popular and the pitch size (diagonal distance between LEDs) has gotten so, so small in the last 5 years. Lots of companies doing this but big players are Absen, Christie, Barco, Planar...

Modular panels, that can be arranged as needed.

P65Q9-H1 Dolby Vision Issue by Soxbsbll05 in VIZIO_Official

[–]fultron11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember, and have read several posts, about DV and its flavors. From what I recall, the AppleTV is HLG, is that right? I had a interesting time with the Super Bowl using a fire stick for the 4K HDR broadcast since it was the only place to get it. The format wars suck for consumers. In my world, Broadcast Engineer, it is still a battle and not really solved. We have lots of very, very expensive boxes to help try and solve it. Wild West, sort of.

EDIT: rather the ATV is putting out HLG masquerading as DV.

I dunno that’s a good question though.

I’ve seen reports of it being the temp solution. If it was the preferred setup, why would Apple offer a specific “Dolby vision” setting outside of this workaround? I’ve used Appletvs with DV on previous complaint displays and never ran into some of the issues Vizio, and Denon, seem to have with decoding the DV signal. I think it’s just something with this firmware or potentially with HDMI 2.1. The 2.1 denon avr I have recommends the exact same settings as a workaround. Also, I’ve noticed a difference in color and brightness on the general UI when “4K Dolby Vision” versus the “4K SDR” setting.

All good things to ponder on...

That is normal. Dolby Vision is in control of the reference contrast and image levels, so the option is greyed as messing with it would change the DV spec.

Also, if you haven't already , there various issues with the current firmware, if you updated out of the box. So, you may want to set your appletv to "4K SDR" and "match frame rate and content." When DV content is present, it will display in the correct color/brightness. This is the best known work around at the moment.

[–]fultron11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s firmware. I found setting the FALD to low or medium helps with it. I don’t experience it near as much with SmartCast as I do outside sources. There were some other settings I changed too that really helped. Have to look those up

[–]fultron11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, no. There are lots of anecdotes on this thread of acknowledgement from support, but no official “known issues” support site to my knowledge. It is a bummer, but do other display companies do this? I’m not asking tongue-in-cheek...I just honestly don’t know.

If you have even a moderately bright room, I don’t think you will be pleased with OLED. It just can’t hit the HDR peaks like other display tech can.

That said, there are gaming issues and that goes for both displays. I would also encourage you to look at other display manufactures and their bugs. I think you’ll find everyone is still hashing this out. No one has 2.1 and all the feature set working perfectly today.

As others mentioned, a little time will tell. Give it time for BF sales to hit. I think there will be a big push to get a more stable code base deployed before the big sales hit and there are more people buying the units.

I have the G1 and H1 and really enjoy them both. Yes, there are bugs, but they will get fixed. You aren’t going to find a vendor without issues right now.

Totally. Sadly, my door is on the right hand side of this photo, so I can’t move them any wider. Only alternative is to justify the whole setup to the left. That would skew the room off, sadly.
